  1. Tomorrow, I’ll be doing a drawing for the winner of my weekly computer giveaway.

The model for this week is a ThinkCentre M710q Tiny with Intel i3-7100T processor, 8GB memory and 120GB storage.

Linux will be pre-installed. One of the reasons I am doing this is to bring attention to Linux distros like:

    • Artix
    • Devuan
    • Void
    • Slackware
    • NetBSD (which is not Linux)

For a chance to win, just be a subscriber of my email newsletter.

  11. Alright. Not sure if there are easier or better ways to do this. I guess now that I *sort of* know what I'm doing it's not _too_ bad, but I think I've got a decent handle on the whole booting thing. I created separate `/boot` and `swap` partitions for my 3 `/` partitions for #Arch, #Artix, and #Slackware. I have EFI boot entries that allow me to boot directly into their own grub, and currently have custom entries in my default Arch grub to boot into each as well.

  12. Yes, Artix is based on Arch, but no systemd. Several different init options, I usually use 'runit'.

Installer is easy to use, especially if you do "erase whole disk".

I installed on the hardware pictured in probably less than 10 minutes after I took the screenshot.

    #Artix
  13. Just a quick screenshot from an Artix with XFCE live boot.

Already I am feeling better about XFCE than MATE. The "Ctrl + Alt + t" keyboard shortcut for bringing up a termal works, in MATE it doesn't by default.

Without messing with it too much, it also seems more easily customizable.

    Will report more later.

  18. So. After deleting and rebuilding my `ESP`partition I don't even know how many times and trying out so many different ways of setting up either #rEFind or #GRUB and messing with the `mkinitcpio.d/linux.preset` files, I finally got my original #Arch partition and new #Artix partition booting.

I could not, for the life of me, figure out how to segregate the Arch and Artix boot loaders and initramfs. But since they appear to be the same, both being Arch under the hood...

    #Linux

  19. ... like I have a much better understanding of the files and folders and how it works. But I'm struggling to figure something out, hence the bsod.

#Artix is #Arch based, so if I install Artix to another partition and then setup boot for Artix, it takes over the initramfs. I thought, based on my reading, that I could customize the path or initramfs name in the `/etc/mkinitcpio.d/linux.preset` file, which does what I expected, but then doesn't boot, bsod.

So, I must be missing some piece here.

  20. After a couple weeks, I found some customization to the KDE desktop environment that make me like it quite a bit better than the default configuration.

The key to this customization is a program called 'cortile' while brings features of a tiling window manager to X11 desktop environments.

The second is binding a keyboard shortcut to the "Overview" feature in KDE. By default, the Overview is activated by the top left 'hot corner', which I found by accident.

I want to focus on one window at a time and not have to worry about its position. Setting 'cortile' to the Maximized setting and the Panel Configuration Visibility to 'Dodge Windows' gives me what I was looking for.

The Overview is now tied to a keyboard shortcut and acts like rofi would, as a window and virtual desktop switcher, as well as an application launcher.

In KDE System Settings, keyboard shortcuts can be configured for switching virtual desktops and moving windows between virtual desktops. It is a bit fiddly and takes quite a bit of time to figure it out, but KDE does not disappoint with with how much it can be customized.

I think this concept and integration of cortile would also work well in the Cinnamon desktop environment (haven't yet tried it), though Cinnamon may not quite the same feature as KDE Overview.

  21. Here's the MATE desktop on top of Artix Linux. It is installed on a ThinkCentre Tiny M700.

This is the computer for this week's RetroEdge.Tech Computer Giveaway.

One thing that I do not like about MATE (and therefore the old Gnome2) is that there is very little keyboard control of the desktop environment. The 'super' key does not launch the Start Menu. Ctrl+Alt+t does not launch a terminal, et cetera.

Perhaps adding rofi on top of MATE would be a good blend of old and better keyboard control.

  22. This #Arch install I just can't kill.

So after like two attempted struggles of installing #Artix, I realized that I had actually downloaded the ISO I was using some months ago. I was having issues getting connected to the mirrors. So I downloaded the recent stable ISO. That seemed to correct that issue... but then it was I think a pacman keyring issue I had. So I downloaded the latest weekly ISO, and boom. Finally success.

Except I hosed up my boot partition. A chroot, fix fix. All good again.

  23. My wife has certainly moved a bit more towards being techy and geeky since we first met. But not so much that I could meaningfully explain to her why I don't want to use systemd, the pump I got from recovering my #Arch install the other night after deleting the wrong partition and having to revert a failed migration attempt to #Artix where I had already blown away #Systemd, or why I'm attempting to use #FreeBSD as my daily driver on my laptop now.

  24. Well. After like 3 or 4 failed attempts at installing #Artix, #FreeBSD installed on the first attempt. Struggled for a little trying to get #Grub to boot it. Switched to #rEFInd and booted right up.

I guess I'm trying out FreeBSD for now.

  25. If I keep running into issues trying to get #Artix to install, I might just have to go with #FreeBSD instead.

  26. There's some good distros out there. Lots to try.

I also want to make my own distro... eventually.

If you are looking for init options, I highly recommend at least trying Devuan and Artix.
