  9. Tomorrow, I’ll be doing a drawing for the winner of my weekly computer giveaway.

The model for this week is a ThinkCentre M710q Tiny with Intel i3-7100T processor, 8GB memory and 120GB storage.

Linux will be pre-installed. One of the reasons I am doing this is to bring attention to Linux distros like:

    • Artix
    • Devuan
    • Void
    • Slackware
    • NetBSD (which is not Linux)

  11. Working on upgrades on a refurbished HP EliteDesk 800 G3 mini computer.

Will be going to a local customer who requested Zorin Linux.

    Upgrades:

    • 16GB memory
    • 1TB nvme SSD

It has an Intel 7th generation i5 processor.

  12. Have you run plan9 yet?

    If yes, what hardware?

I'll be focusing quite a bit on small desktop computers, often with Intel CPUs, 4th - 7th generation. I am curious if that hardware is a good match for plan9.

  16. The System Requirements for Kazeta looked like it would not work very well on older #TinyMiniMicro computers like this due to wanting a dedicated graphics card and a warning that Intel graphics *may* work on processors 2017 and newer.

Let us know how it worked for you. I would think that less demanding games could work fine, but that warning in the Docs kept me from trying it on machines with only Intel integrated graphics.

  17. widening the topic to the future life of this cluster in such a scenario, I have a general plan for that as well:

    * use 35-watt tier (T-class CPU) #1LPC systems for now, with an eye to moving to 15-watt tier (U-class CPU) systems in another couple upgrade cycles; currently there isn't really a U-class equivalent of the T-class #TinyMiniMicro systems from the big manufacturers, NUC is about as standard as it gets.

    * develop technique with gear on hand whenever possible, meaning continue using these ancient & crappy consumer UPSes with drop-in LFP batteries, use existing 15yo RasPi for control, but the point is to have the experience built up so I can quickly switch to a Pi Zero class system and a custom DC-DC UPS when the time comes.

  18. For many of the tasks that people used SBCs for, such as the Raspberry Pi, a used tiny business class computer is a better fit.

I particularly like the ThinkCentre Tiny M700 and M710q computers.

  19. Patrick from #ServeTheHome with a new TinyMiniMicro video on Lenovo's new generation 2 ThinkStation P3 Tiny ... there's a lot crammed into a tiny 1-liter package!

  20. ...Having escalated from "trolling eBay for good deals in onesy-twosies" to "bidding on equipment lots on government surplus sites," it becomes clear that I have a problem.

Also, please don't bid against me. I need this. 😂

  21. New setup, who dis? It's that time again, but some changes:

The most significant change isn't the hardware. For the first time with MAME on Haiku, the build script uses #LLVM 20's lld instead of GCC's ld. I'm hoping this is going to dramatically reduce build time. We shall see!

  22. @hohokam I think its generally accepted now that the time of the pi is over as its price for the 5 has increased to such a point there are equally low power x86 systems available in the similar ballpark price wise.
Look into the #tinyminimicro series from #servethehome and intel n100 small form factor pcs.

  23. Busy day today. A few things I'd hoped to get done will have to wait until tomorrow.

Happily, a RAM upgrade arrived for my Xeon-stuffed Lenovo M93p Tiny, so I made time for that. It's now maxed out with 16GB of DDR3L. The RAM passed Lenovo's on-board RAM diagnostics, so the box is now ready to build the next release of #MAME for #HaikuOS!

The total upgrade, with the RAM and the E3-1275L V3, cost about £66, which isn't that bad.

One more project ticked off the list!

  24. Out with the old, in with the... slightly less old but MUCH faster!

I've upgraded my ageing Lenovo M93p Tiny for use as a low-power Haiku/VM host/compiler box, going from an i5-4570T to an AliExpress-special Xeon E3-1275L V3.

With the hyperthreading and 8MB of L3 cache, PassMark says that this new processor is almost double the speed of the old one. But it only increases the TDP from 35W to 45W, so no need for a bigger PSU.

My local seller is finally restocking the 8gb for about $85 USD (non scalper price finally). I always wanted to start my / journey with it, but after researching, a might be better value for the long run?! I'm now looking at some second hand Tiny PCs below $150... What would you start your homelab journey with for around $150 USD? I crossed off NUCs due to their overheating tendencies. I also have the on my shortlist.
