With LXQt I have rediscovered the joys of screensavers !!
Questions for linux users:
1. I wonder why one no longer finds screensavers in modern OSes. Is it just a fashion thing?
2. With increasing adoption of wayland, I wonder if any replacements/lookalikes are in the works. I really hope so!
Does anyone have more info ?

I have to admit, LXQt is fast-becoming my DE of choice on linux.
My workflow is heavily GUI-based for most things and I really like how it allows using both Qt and GTK tools without breaking the UI.
The only thing I miss a lot from gnome is the ability to use emacs-like shortcuts throughout the os (mostly simple commands like C-f/b/a/e/n/p/d/k etc).
Anyone with solutions ?

I am really liking LXQt - lex-cute - desktop. The defaults are just below desirable, but with just a bit of customizing LXQt is really good.
So it is not as polished visually and features "out of the box" as Cinnamon desktop is, but it is much lighter on resources and is customizable in the ways that I'd like.
Wish I'd tried it sooner... but maybe it really hadn't found its current form until recently.

I installed LXQt desktop on my laptop, as I have been using it on a desktop for a while.
Artix by default using the Openbox window manager with LXQt instead of the xfwm4 that Devuan bundles with LXQt.
So some of the shortcut key configuration is slightly different.
Eventually, I'll get around to pairing BSPWM with LXQt, as I think that'd be fun. For right now, I'm running cortile which maximizes the windows automatically with the default I have.
For right now, I can say that LXQt is much lighter on resources than Cinnamon on the same machine. Cinnamon on Artix seemed to be much more of a resource hog than Cinnamon on Debian and Devuan based Linux systems.
But with LXQt, it just sips instead of gulps.

A few more tweaks to the LXQt desktop.
Put the menu bar at the top of the screen. Removed the start menu (mainmenu) and Quick Launch. Put the Desktop Switcher on the right side of the bar.
I am launching applications with lxqt-runner bound to a shortcut key, 'Super + Space' (so similar to default rofi or drun functionality, but the default built in tool for LXQt).
The default keyboard shortcuts for positioning windows are pretty good but assume having the numpad, which I do since I am using this on a desktop with full size keyboard.
I modified the keyboard shortcut for 'maximize window' to be 'Super + Begin(keypad)' s that the center of keypad does what I intuitively expect it to for window positioning.
Right now I feel very comfy in LXQt. There's just enough for widgets and customization to feel that it is easy to use. Just enough ability to customize, without being overwhelmed with options. It is light and quick.

I have installed the LXQT version of Vendefoul Wolf Linux on a ThinkCentre Tiny M700.
My first couple attempts to install were unsuccessful... but I now think that is due to me trying to use the "disk encryption" checkbox in the installer.
After just about a half hour of getting used to it and making a few adjustments to the keyboard shortcuts and settings, I am quite happy with LXQT.
It is quick and light and has most of core features that Cinnamon desktop has.

it seems that #LXQt is shaping up to be finally my default desktop in this Linux desktophopping 🤓 :linux:

Since #FydeOS was a bust on the #ebox, I did try a few other distros to see what sticks.
1) Tried #EasyOS. It was neat to play around with but not my cup of tea.
2) Attemptedto install #Fedora #LXDE, all three attempts failed during the install process.
3) currently running #AlpineLinux with #LXQT. This might be the one I stick with for a while.
Anyone have any good ideas for a low spec cpu that has to much ram pc? The ebox is running an Intel Celeron 3965U with 16 gigs of ram? -
now I'm using #lxqt again 'cause its simplicity and speed allowing for a more fluid experience to focus on what's important, and I like its mix of nostalgia, tradition and avant-garde at the same time... after the distrohopping comes the desktophopping you know?.. 😝

@andrewmelder #LinuxMint is a very good choice. It is like Ubunutu with lots and lots of software available in it’s repository, but a community-owned and operated distro that basically cuts-out the corporate add-ons that most people don’t need. The #CinnamonDE is incredibly stable and easy to use, and not really noticeably heavier than other, more lightweight desktop environments like #Xfce and #LXQt , so it still works nicely on smaller computers.

After a year and a half of daily driving #GhostBSD (which I love and recommend), I moved to base #FreeBSD on a new desktop machine. I wanted a lightweight desktop with XLibre. I decided to try #lxqt but found the default pcmanfm-qt to be quite buggy and uncomfortable. I finally found my happy place with lxqt + QtFM.
These are the packages I installed to get to a comfortable desktop:
xlibre xlibre-slim lxqt lxqt-qtplugin

Hey Linuxers, we are cool and unique by using Linux on the desktop. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise! ✨

RE: https://mstdn.io/@d1cor/116556140020089035

I just upgraded the system on the recording laptop for #IWP9, which is @archlinux btw, the only convenient distro out there. 🤗
I used the chance to try out #LXQt on #Wayland with #niri. While niri is not my cup of tea, this was a good chance to contribute to the #Arch wiki and document pitfalls with the config file; see the note in the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/LXQt#Wayland_Session section.
Kudos to the person on Reddit who replied to someone else wondering why their config file had no effect, albeit validating ok.
