I’m thinking that rsync is not sufficient for important large data backups. Even if I’m rsyncing the data away to the Hetzner Storage Box.
I need something more advanced with deduplication and so on. I tried #borgbackup in the past, and that thing was absolutely not user-friendly. It was rather user-hostile.
Now, #SelfHosted community has #Duplicati and #Duplicacy? Does someone use one? Any recommendations?#homelab #selfhosting #selfhost #backup #backups #databackup

Turns out I've been pruning my #BorgBackup archives wrong. There's a second step involved that actually deletes the "removed" data rather than just (presumably) removing the refrences to that data from the index. While I knew about this second step, I assumed that it was like how it works when you delete a file: the data technically remains intact, but gets overwritten by subsequent writes. Apparently I was wrong about this. I've been pruning—but not compacting—my daily backups monthly for years.
Long story short: I just spent an entire day compacting my backups. My backup storage just went from 71% full to 38%.

turns out this is what happens if your backup strategy is aggressive (read: based on Google for Education's former "everyone gets unlimited Drive storage" policy) and don't run `borg prune` for literally 8 years... and then all of a sudden you do........

@borgbackup @argv_minus_one "you promoted it wrong" has serious victim blaming vibes :-\
I've been using #borgbackup for years. I'd rather avoid change.
Is there a public statement on their AI policy and usgae? Does everything still get a human review for instance?

I just freed up 65GB in 9 minutes using BorgBackup's compaction feature, which is accessible with a single click from BorgWarehouse now! It's so powerful.
The speed of this compression is also the result of the brilliant work of Thomas Waldmann, the lead maintainer of BorgBackup. Thanks to him.
By the way, check out the beautiful redesign of the BorgBackup website : https://www.borgbackup.org/

Can anyone guess what my fix was for ”Why is Mattermost always down in the early morning hours!?” 😅
Hint: Maybe #borgBackup should by default ignore the very repo it is backup-ing into...
UPDATE: Sorry, wrongly blamed @borgbackup - the backup included a #btrfs #snapper snapshots directory (which itself included the borg repo *several times* 😅). Although the inodes are equal, so borg could check that...

Sigh, https://asta.boserup.eu/forest/kompromat/ shows that #Borg #borgbackup is now #slop, and in quite core parts of it. Looks like it's time to change how I'm doing #backup ....

📦 More and more apps are adding BorgWarehouse to their catalog and I love to see it! 💜
To make those integrations easier, I share an official brand assets page: logos & icon in crisp SVG, brand colors and simple usage guidelines.

Server-Wartung Session done 🛠️
Was in einer Opencode-Session so alles zusammenkommt:
Dauer ca. 20 Minuten
#glm52 über #ollama cloud
knapp über 70k token🔧 Forgejo 15.0.2 → 15.0.3
gepatched (ps:rebuild, app.ini ROOT verifiziert, health grün)🗑️ Aufgeräumt - 2 stillgelegte Services entfernt:
- Open WebUI (KI-Chat, docker-image deploy) - Skill, nginx conf, SSL cert, update-check raus
- opencode-web (dev.premium-web.ai) - systemd service, nginx conf, SSL cert, update-check raus🏗️ Refactored - monolithische 355-Zeilen `update.sh` in modulare Struktur:
- `lib/common.sh` + `lib/version-check.sh` (shared helpers)
- `checks/{forgejo,immich,backup,system}.sh` (eine Datei pro Service)
- Neuer Service = 1 Datei + 1 Zeile in Main
- Borg `--last 1 --json` → neuestes Archiv muss <26h alt sein
- DB-Dump-Freshness-Check mit explizitem Alter
- 3 pure Hilfsfunktionen + Orchestrator
- Bugfix: zeigte 2.70 TB (compressed) statt 263 GB (dedup) - jetzt korrekt📚 Doku aktualisiert - AGENTS.md, home.md, backup SKILL.md:
- Aktuelle Services, modulares Update-System, "Adding a new check" Howto
- restic komplett entfernt (incompatible mit Hetzner Storagebox) - Borg-only
- 7 commits, alle gepusht (auto-deploys Doku via Forgejo Actions)Fazit: Infrastructure-as-code feels good ✨

CW: LLMs in open source
Would've loved to have gotten an easy choice there, but alas, not in this timeline.

Aclabs.pro

https://www.hetzner.com/storage/storage-box/
https://docs.hetzner.com/de/storage/storage-box/access/access-ssh-rsync-borg/

Hey #borgbackup experts - if I do a daily backup but now I want to do also a hourly backup of one folder, would I do that to the same repository?
If yes, I probably need to adapt the prune calls to keep hourly backups, right?
:boost_ok:
