It would be neat if there was something that used "borg extract --dry-run --list" on the repo in an easily-browsable GUI as described here:
https://docs.borgbase.com/restore/borg/cli
I use Pika Backup and it only has mount which uses FUSE and it's slow with a lot of files which is what that page says. Vorta looked confusing last time I looked at it and it's slop now anyway.

Trying to figure out why Borg over a network to an online service takes so long to list files in my home directory and it seems to mostly just be like that. I was hoping it could have a list of filenames and paths that could be traversed and only more stuff downloaded when certain files are requested like Crashplan.

I just lost situational (situGUInal?) awareness and accidentally deleted two entire photo albums from my phone gallery thinking they were just two images. And #Syncthing replicated the deletion to all my computers. But, happy ending, not only do I take regular #BorgBackup backups, I also use #btrbk so recovered everything via the snapshots on the laptop within 60 seconds, and of course Syncthing copied them back to the phone immediately.
Check your backups.

Prologue: over christmas, I spent my vacation setting up a backup system. VPS to the homelab via VPN
Act one: install neomutt on my computer
Act two: I mess up the neomutt config
Act three: a keystroke error deletes every single email in the INDEX folder
Act four: I freak out but then remember I have daily mailbox backups, fingers crossed because I've never actually done a rollout
Fifth: the data is there, I restore it
What was the name of the play? Run and backup your data!!! And yes, validate the backup!! -
Today I updated my backup scripts to use #BorgBackup instead of creating just tgz archives. It's so simple to use. 👍
I am looking forward to version 2.0. It will get many nice additional features. -
Thinking about setting up a home #borg server on an unused #RaspberyPi 4.
Questions for the #HiveMind:
- How much RAM does a borg server need to manage about 3TB of backups?
- How big of a USB disk do I need for the / partition for RasbperryPi OS with no GUI?
- Does borg deduplicate files between users' backups, or only within a single user's backups?

#DigitalIndependenceDay meets #WorldBackupDay (March 31st)! Backups are key to #digital #sovereignty. My 3-2-1 strategy: 3 copies, 2 media, 1 offsite — no #hyperscaler needed. I recently migrated from #BorgBackup to #Restic: better multi-repo flexibility, same solid encryption and deduplication. Offsite storage goes to a #Hetzner Storage Box, which is significantly cheaper than #AWS #S3 and the data remains in #Europe.

Major improvements to #Borgbackup coming soon!

Getting Borg backups to work on Nextcloud without an intermediary step was way more painful than it should have been and largely came down either a missing step in the documentation or a bug. I'll file a bug later and report back but in the meantime if you're new to #nextcloud and pulling your hair out because your remote #borgbackup won't work, the fix is fairly simple. Once you create the remote borg repo you need to copy the config file from the borg repository to the data directory of your nextcloud-aio container. So the steps look like this:
export BORG_REPO=ssh://[email protected]/path/to/repo
export BORG_PASSPHRASE=whatever you like
borg init -e repokey-blake2
cp /path/to/repo/config /var/lib/docker/volumes/nextcloud_aio_mastercontainer/_data/data/borg.config
chown www-data:www-data /var/lib/docker/volumes/nextcloud_aio_mastercontainer/_data/data/borg.config
chmod 0770 /var/lib/docker/volumes/nextcloud_aio_mastercontainer/_data/data/borg.config
So following above, you're creating your repo on host zzz.zzz.zzz.zzz (replace this with the IP address of the target) and then once that's done you're copying the config file that gets created in the borg repo into the data directory for the Nextcloud Master Container. It looks like this maybe worked on older versions so my guess is this is a bug but anyway, there you go, this should fix the issue with your backups not working. They'll hopefully fix this at a later date.

I just (finally!) cancelled my #dropbox subscription as part of my move away from propritary (esp. American) tech! 🎉
I've been a subscriber since I was a teenager and it has taken me a while to work out how to untangle myself from this one!
(I'm moving to #ProtonDrive and #BorgBackup instead)

Couldn't get back to sleep this morning after waking up in pain, so I took some time to ease the mental pain of keeping track of what's running where in my #homelab with a new #wiki page. Have a look if you're interested in what I'm running across my main #NAS and two Raspberry Pis.
Hopefully this will serve as a reminder of what config files I really need to put in a central location.

https://linuxnews.de/borgbase-stellt-vykar-vor-neuer-ansatz-fuer-borg-backups/ #borgbackup #vykar #linux #linuxnews -
@mistersheep even network traffic should be lower with #borgBackup than plain #btrfs send. If haven't worked with btrfs send yet, but I guess it's faster than borg if you leave network speed out of the equation.
-
Now I'm thinking about a new strategy:
- stop service
- make #btrfs snapshot (seconds at max)
- restart service
- run #borgBackup from snapshot, but via #bubbleWrap so it sees it as the original path and inodes for consistency&performance!
- run as many borg backups as desired to any remote, even in parallel, as the service is running againThoughs?
-
Ok, thanks to @borgmatic I have a backup that is running and sending data to a repurposed backup drive that used to be formatted to my old backup scheme and is now fully assimilated to the borg.
I'm gonna run it for a few weeks, then convert my other hard drive that I swap between... and once those have run for a month or two I'll swap one of them to my offsite location and convert my current offsite drive. Slow, steady, and with a fallback at all times!
-
#borgmatic friends. I have several backup drives that I rotate through. If I list each of their mount points in the borgmatic config, and the drive isn't mounted so the path doesn't exist, will borgmatic error out, or continue with the additionally listed destinations?
ideally It'd just update whatever drives I have mounted, and skip over whatever ones I don't.
-
I don't really know how Pika Backup interacts with the borg integrity check thing and BorgBase has been giving me warnings about lack of post-quantum key exchange for a while. This is fine when doing backups but integrity checks say that it failed. I found the Pika Backup log file in "~/.var/app/org.gnome.World.PikaBackup/config/pika-backup/history.json" and the only stuff is the warnings just like the UI popup (search for "check"). Is it just a confusing UI thing?
