  1. There's a lot going on at #EvergreenBrickworks in #TorontoON -- including a #ChildrensGarden, #FarmersMarkets, #Workshops, #CycleTorontoRecHub, and much, much more!

"Welcome to Evergreen Brick Works, a former brick factory turned gem in the heart of Toronto’s beautiful ravines. Open daily and all year round, the Brick Works is a space to play, eat, shop, explore and connect in all seasons.

Be sure to visit this summer and catch a Football Watch Party, an outdoor movie, a playful adventure in our Children’s Garden or our weekly Saturday Farmers Market"

  5. Lack of #ThirdSpaces? #Smartphones taking away #HumanConnection? Seeing through the bullshit and believing they have no future? There's a lot of factors that could be at play here.

#TeenTakeovers push cities to take action as experts see echoes of the Covid pandemic

Teens who have been clashing with cops went into lockdown during their middle school years, when they were learning how to interact with the world around them.

    May 28, 2026, 6:01 PM EDT
By Doha Madani and Corky Siemaszko

Excerpt: " 'More often than not, it is a desperate need for connection,' he said.

"In addition, Abrams said, teen takeovers swell up fast because many teenagers just have no place else to go. There used to be more of what experts call '#ThirdSpaces' — not home or school — where kids could socialize freely. But spaces that are affordable and welcoming to teenagers are increasingly harder to find, Abrams said.

    "Take the library, he said.

" 'We always see plenty of room for senior citizens, plenty of room for adults and programming for adults,' Abrams said. 'We see lots of space for little kids. ... We don’t see as much room for 11-, 12-, 13-year-olds or 16-year-olds.'

"Jasmin Ford, a psychiatric nurse practitioner and clinical instructor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, said teenagers today face a mental health crisis that accelerated during the pandemic and has not returned to pre-Covid levels."

  7. Compare and contrast

    youtube.com/shorts/xMDxRzqpbF0

    with

    lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/2026/

Strictly speaking, the one does not contradict the other, as each chiefly addresses different topics: the unhoused in public spaces on the one hand, public drug use on the other.

Yet a difference in attitude is certainly present here, as well as a difference in the understanding of freedom as a value.

I don't have a pat answer about the "correctness" of either approach. I do know that progressives should be thinking hard about these matters
and be ready for challenging discussion about public space, inclusion, and the justifiability or otherwise of paternalism with regard to housing, drug use, and mental illness.

  9. Alas, the reality in Britain is so-called " #pub community " revolves around heavy #alcohol use (and is dominated by white males with centrist or right-wing political views), outside of towns Britain is heavily car dependent and society rightly no longer tolerates DUI - and in town if you aren't driving you have to get back home somehow - streets at night aren't always pleasant in town even for men (especially if you are also from any ethnic minority, marginalised group or neurodiverse) and are even worse for women / openly LGBT+

On top of cost of living, this adds to reasons why pub culture is dying ( and I say this as a member of #CAMRA )

We do need more #ThirdSpaces which open in the evening, but aren't dependent on alcohol dealing!

  15. Ten years ago a group of us met in an Arcadia coffee shop to talk about literature and theology, perhaps after the manner of the Oxford Inklings. We decided to meet once a month, and did so until Covid put an end to such gatherings, and here is a record of our first meeting.

Two of the founding members, David Levey, of the English Department at Unisa, and Tony MacGregor, have since died (though not of Covid), so we haven't been able to revive it. It was an example of a "third space" gathering (the first two "spaces" being home and work).

  19. @annaleen Took a break from rereading texts I’m using in my classes this semester to enjoy a few hours with the robots (and Robles) at #automaticnoodle What a lovely novella: It conjured up so many fun memories of all the #thirdspaces I’ve enjoyed over the years. Thank you for sharing their story with the world.

  21. Btw, I don't want to but I'm gonna ask for some money #mutualaid #LeftistSpaces #Anarchy #ThirdSpaces #electricity #utilities

So my birthday is in January, which I usually don't tout much about because it's actually not a rather positive date for me.
The leftist space that I take care of together with others is now facing a payment of 350€ for electricity, since the space got used more in 2025 compared to 2024. If I ever taught you sth which you appreciate or I've been there for you in some way and you'd like to say thanks, it would be great if you chip in some money:)
The space is an anarcho leftist space which is used by intersectional feminist, migrant justice, climate justice and other groups.
If that vibes with you, here is more info and how to chip in some money:

  23. 🐶 Joy, Food, and Gratitude
    1. New Neighbour: Pure joy ran into me today! Met Biscuit 🐩 and her human, my new neighbours.

    2. OMAD & Nourishment: Fueled up with homemade okra, roasted shrimp, green peas for dinner, plus a delicious lentil/split pea soup mix (thanks, BFF! 🎁). It was part of a 3-pack ready-to-make soup xmas gift I received!

    3. Body Electric : TENS massage erased yesterday's knot! Shoulders and back are clear. Ready for cupping therapy tomorrow. Working on getting my hips and spine back to perfect alignment. 🧘‍♀️

My favourite gift isn't the pile of unopened presents waiting for New Year's Day; it's always pure Presence. Pictured here are #FediCollective folx who joined me today! Most stayed for 2 hours, the rest stayed for 3 chatting about dev, design, startups, marketing, the Open Web and what we are grateful for 💚

  25. Third places

Third Places... refers to places where people spend time between home (‘first’ place) and work (‘second’ place). They are locations where we exchange ideas, have a good time, and build relationships. “Third places” as community builders from the Brookings Institution. It was coined by Ray Oldenburg. Before I became a parent, I had some third places: home bar for dart team restaurants where I was a regular bookstores / comics stores / game stores gym brunch group (we went […]

    Quote:
    > The alcohol industry has a monopoly on nightlife.
And when you have crowds of drunk people crashing through your city every night, you need to make it drunk-person-proof.
And if your city is drunk-person-proof you don't get to have nice things in your city.

  30. CW: "austerity", "integration", UK

    Good piece from Nesrine Malik.

"The supposedly unifying thread of all these new policies is “integration”: this mythical concept that has taken on the quality of a religious ideal. ... It depends upon the children’s centre that links parents to others in the community and pools advice and resources. It depends on the libraries that provide literature and history and local knowledge. It depends on youth clubs and midwife visits and community centres and public-sector workers ...

"Yet all of these services have been hollowed out by years of austerity, pushing people back into their own small networks and atomised lives."

I'm remembering when one of the Nottingham leisure centres was closed, a youth worker explaining that the youth club there had been neutral ground for local kids from different areas to be able to hang out safely. I think it's unlikely the benefits of that had been costed in when the council decided to close the place. Even purely economically, I think it was a false economy, let alone quality of life and community-building.

  32. @DecaturNature The shopping mall angle led to some legal decisions ~1980s, possibly before. I don't know if there's been any subsequent online equivalent. I can't point at anything specific (though I may be able to turn something up on request). But that's where I'd start looking.

Pruneyard v. Robbins is the canonical case: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pruneyar (SCOTUS, 1980), finding for the plaintiffs that a free-speech right did exist.

This is probably the remit of the EFF / ACLU / EPIC and similar organisations.

For the record I've long had an issue with the notion that free speech rights are only a matter of direct government action. There are a few reasons for this:

    • The right to exclude speech from private property ultimately relies on government sanction for that exclusion.
    • Spatial monopolies, whether of commercial, educational, recreational, or even residential spaces, trade private control (and powers and limitations) for public ones, whether or not those private concerns are for-profit or not-for-profit. E.g., what are the free-speech rights on a private school or university, or a religious institution, or a park, or a residential complex?
    • Common carrier provisions were enacted in transportation, and later communications systems, specifically because those systems, though privately held, exercised so much power over commerce, travel, and communication. The idea that free speech is absolutely limited to government interactions in that context strikes me as ludicrous.

  38. This starts off being about how movies need to shut up and let things happen silently on occasion, but it goes way further and deeper than that. It's got things to say about #urbanism and about the death of #ThirdSpaces in the US, and how this is impoverishing our culture.

  40. I've seen a lot of talk for #Europe to push towards enhancing #AI research, reducing corporate 'red tape' to ensure we remain 'competitive'.

But I don't think these are the things that will protect us. #Fascism came to the #US in the guise of economic growth. It came in #economic shifts that discouraged third spaces and atomised #community. In increasing wealth #inequality and the ostracisation of minorities.
