About the art process behind my book covers…and a question...
I began abstract painting around 2015–2016 after many years of realistic pen and ink sketching connected to my architectural work. Over time, colour, geometry, and nature shifted my practice toward abstraction.
In 2022, I gave an artist talk at the Lundt‑Glover Gallery in Chatham, NJ, hosted by the Art League of the Chathams, where I discussed my work at the time, including digital developments in NFTs and my decision not to pursue that direction.
Later that year, I began the 27‑painting series that my current ecofiction trilogy covers are based on, using four panels from that show as the starting point for the newer work.

The piece shown, Wellness, was part of the solo show and later became the cover for our ASEI Arts international charity anthology, Anthology House Vol. 2, created to benefit UNICEF.

I made another watercolour sketchbook. 80 pages of A5 using Khadi 100% cotton 150gsm paper. The deckled edges look cool and work well with the DIY vibe of the rest of the book.

My Peg & Awl Nutshell came today, my first really fancy art thing in awhile and I'm digging it. It'll be good for exploring. If other urban sketcher folks decide to get one, keep in mind the Sailor fude pen in the middle is (as you can see) too tall for it.
I keep accidentally calling it a "nutsack" instead of "nutshell" because apparently my subconscious has the humor of a 13-year-old boy (this tracks). I don't even notice the error until someone is laughing.
Me, today, shoving my phone with the usps website in Greg's face: LOOK! MY NUTSACK IS DOWNSTAIRS!

My dad found this old watercolour set. No branding and the "bricks" of colour are just mounted directly into the metal. They'll eventually fall out. Says "Made in England", but that's it.
On the other hand it was free and the colours are nice, so I might as well give it try before spending money on newer stuff.

Ever splashed out on something you could truly live without, but love it so much that you have no regrets?
This is mine: "Colour Cubes" made by Aussie, Sarah Renae Clarke. It's basically boxes of pictures and their #colour palettes, and it's a beautiful collection!
It reminds me of the William Morris quote, "Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful". This is both.
Or.... is it just a giant Rubik's Cube?

CW: budget art supplies recommendation
If you have a #Rusta shop nearby, you might want to see if they also have the Playbox of Sweden "maleveske" on offer for 69.90 NOK. Clas Ohlson has the same set in their permanent assortment, rebranded, but at 129.90 NOK usually, so almost double the cost.
While aimed at kids, I've personally found the oil pastels to be quite satisfying, and even the water colour paints where vibrant and a joy to play with. Of course I don't expect lightfastness and they don't list the pigments used, but so far my rainbow whirlpool painting is still brightening up one of our walls. :)
Unfortunately I can't check how my oil pastels drawing of aurora borealis over Tromsø is doing, as I accidentally left it at the in-laws and haven't seen it since, and my peacock feather in oil pastels is too recent anyway.
#BeardGrabber really enjoys using his box from time to time, so I picked up two more yesterday; one for me, and one to either restock his, or to use as a gift.

CW: long (close to 3000 chars) follow-up post going into detail on the water color papers used.
The A5 "Anna & Clara's Watercolour Paper" pad of 20 x 200 grams + 10 x 300 grams I bought for 34.90 NOK (or 3.20 EUR) from #SøstreneGrene is not great imho... I think it's probably more aimed at gouache than aquarelle...
I find it too smooth, and water mostly just pools up too much on top of it... The field of flowers was painted on the 200 grams paper, but as the (lack of) texture is the same on the 300 grams sheets, I doubt those will be much better. Though I bet the latter will at least buckle and warp less.The A5 "Anna & Clara's Watercolour Paper Acid-Free" pad with 10 x 230 grams white sheets + 10 x 230 grams black sheets onto which I painted the bottom-left #BaldursGate scene is more like the similar paper I got and used previously from Søstrene Grene (which I used for the top-left Baldur's Gate scene).
It has quite some more texture, and —most importantly— it absorbs the water and paints better. I suspect it's actually the same paper, but now the pads have half their sheets replaced with black sheets.I kinda wish they'd put the original pads back into their assortment instead, as the black sheets are more useful for metallic water colour paints, which I currently don't have. I guess I could play around with mixing the white gouache with my aquarelle paints, and use that on the black sheets?
At 23.30 NOK (or 1.98 EUR) for 20 sheets, it's cheap aquarelle paper that works quite well for my practice sessions, but with half of the sheets being basically unusable for me, it's not as affordable as the pads they previously sold...I still want to add some more foliage to the first Baldur's Gate painting (top-left), but I wanted to wait for daytime sunlight before working on it again, so instead I started a new one without looking at the example.
(And I'll probably want to scan the first one before working on it again, in case I ruin it...)The cute little ghost on A6 paper is the main character from #MrGhost aka #Yuureikun for the #MSX, which I painted two days ago. Painted with just the #PrussianBlue and the #OpaqueWhite from the #RoyalTalens' #VanGogh series. I was tempted to add the light-green background to it that one of the example screenshots had, but ended up just sticking to the monochrome version you see here.
This paper is a fine-grained cold pressed cotton rag postcard paper from #Fabriano, which I got many years ago as a kid, but never really used till recently. I always found the paper too precious, and considered my skills lacking too much to make proper use of it. It's only recently that I've felt comfortable using it.I'll take proper pictures of them by daylight tomorrow, and will maybe add some more detailed image descriptions then as well.
