I Just Learned You Can Make Yarn From Milk (And Now I Have Questions)
The internet has taught me many things over the years.
Some of them have been useful.
Some of them have been deeply concerning.
And recently, I learned that people can make yarn from milk.
Actual milk.
The same stuff that goes on cereal.
Naturally, I had questions.
Lots of questions.
My first question was:
Who looked at a glass of milk and thought, “I bet I could crochet with that”?
Apparently, someone did.
And not only did they think it—they figured out how to make it happen.
Wait. What Exactly Is Milk Yarn?
Milk yarn is made from casein, which is the primary protein found in milk.
The milk itself isn’t spun directly into yarn. Instead, manufacturers separate the protein, process it into fibers, and spin those fibers into yarn.
So while you’re not crocheting with a carton of 2%, you are technically crocheting with something that started its life in a dairy farm.
That sentence feels illegal somehow.
https://youtu.be/O4pVny7NV8E?si=scDBZSbkKSUzHDNk
This Isn’t Even New
Here’s the part that surprised me most.
Milk fiber isn’t some trendy invention dreamed up by a startup that sells $14 coffee and artisanal notebooks.
People have been experimenting with milk fiber since the 1930s.
That’s right.
Somewhere during the Great Depression, somebody looked at milk and thought:
“Clothing.”
Meanwhile, I look at milk and think:
“I should probably drink this before it expires.”
But What Does It Feel Like?
People who have worked with genuine milk fiber often describe it as:
- Silky
- Soft
- Smooth
- Lightweight
- Warm without being heavy
Many compare it to a blend of silk and wool.
So apparently milk yarn doesn’t feel like cheese.
That’s good news.
The Great Milk Cotton Confusion
Now here’s where things get weird.
If you’ve spent any time shopping online for yarn, you’ve probably seen something called milk cotton yarn.
I always assumed this meant it contained milk fiber and cotton.
Reasonable assumption, right?
Not necessarily.
Many yarns marketed as “milk cotton” are actually acrylic or polyester blends and contain little or no actual milk fiber.
It’s one of crochet’s greatest mysteries.
Right up there with:
- Why do we own 47 stitch markers and can never find one?
- Where do crochet hooks disappear to?
- Why do I need one more skein after buying eight?
Other Fibers That Sound Completely Made Up
Once I discovered milk yarn existed, I went down a fiber rabbit hole.
Friends, things got strange.
You can find fibers made from:
Banana
Yes. Banana plants.
Soybeans
Tofu sweaters are apparently closer to reality than I ever imagined.
Corn
Imagine explaining to your grandmother that your cardigan started as a vegetable.
Nettle
The same plant that spends its entire life trying to ruin your afternoon.
Lotus Stem
Because apparently somebody looked at a pond and thought:
“That would make a lovely shawl.”
The Real Question
At this point, I don’t know what surprises me more:
The fact that milk yarn exists…
Or the fact that crocheters looked at it and collectively said:
“Sure. I’ll try that.”
Then again, this is a hobby where we willingly spend six months making blankets, own enough yarn to survive several small apocalypses, and regularly play a dangerous game known as Yarn Chicken.
Maybe milk yarn isn’t the weirdest thing after all.
Maybe we’re the weird ones.
And honestly?
I’m okay with that.
What’s the strangest fiber you’ve ever crocheted with?
Have you ever tried milk fiber yarn—or is this the first time you’ve discovered that dairy products can become crochet supplies?

Honoring an old tradition with new materials. 🌿✂️
St. Brigid's Cross is one of Ireland's oldest symbols — traditionally woven from rushes on February 1st to mark Imbolc and welcome in the light of spring. I made mine from paper, and honestly? The folding is almost meditative.
Four steps. Two hands. One very ancient symbol.
Have you ever made one? 👇
