Things are heating up for my dreams of a color furnace! My color base batch (raw glass batch without the usual decolorants) arrived and we found a time that Mike could stop by and offer his sage color melting wisdom while I have both of the workstations rented for the weekend. The furnace is getting dialed in and this will be the first time it is getting used!
I mixed the color base really well and we split it in half for two melts. I added black nickel oxide, sulfur, pine rosin, Barium Nitrate and red iron oxide to *hopefully turn my color base into a dark amber
Sunday my tube puller in Philly, (and myself) have to work- but Monday we will pull tubes out of the color furnace! Soon I will get all the glass out of the existing crucible, flush it with compatible glass, then take that out and begin charging the brown batch!
So exciting!

I finally got around to making the patriotic antifa in script neon. Alas on the day I wanted to make it (to be ready for No Kings protests) I had to make a thing for Paypal... aiyaiyai, oh well.
This one was technically challenging- tight, 15mm tube script and I wanted to do each letter an different color too. I almost gave up and I'll admit, I could do better in a few spots.
I wanna make the rainbow design into a crackle tube. That one will be even more unforgiving with the colors changing and needing to be uniformly puffed out (but not too thin) for the crackle fill.
Hey made in USA :) I like the anti racist and anti fascist thing and if someone buys this piece they could be added to some list despite just supporting me an my little neon habit :)

Spent my Easter eating a delicious Danish Kringle with Ali and then made this doodle.
I am excited, its forbidden in a few ways. One of which is the tube sizes, which are fine tuned for brightness. That big bright white 25mm tube is thin lead glass- and it would take awhile to get it as hot as the 10 mm #blacklight tube, which will be made brighter by being the narrowest, most focused part of the arc.
On a bombarder, that would suck the narrow blacklight in. It is possibly the best combination to be bombarded in terms of glass heat sensitivity- buut I have an oven, so its baking out over night so I can make this the first try guaranteed :).
Hooray for Easter! After Minneapolis, I needed a day to sleep, and I still should send some emails, but I wanted to relax, and I feel recharged, -but there is about to be so much commercial bending.

A little video of Galen's finished "Slumlord" sign. I bent the neon for him, and some of his sign painter buddies helped with the paint design.
Galen wears the "Slumlord" badge with pride- refusing to raise rent on his property in the rapidly gentrifying Hilltop neighborhood of Tacoma. The piece is inspired by another landlord with a coin operated gas meter on the stove (quarters for cooking time).
We love the clickity clackety of the mechanical incandescent bulb flasher in there- Galen mounted it so the whole metal "can" acts as an "amplifier". Galen loves anything mechanical. It was way fun being his Teachers Assistant for the class.
The ruby red glass in this came from Chihuly "Studio 1" in Tacoma (long since moved to Seattle)
