  1. The main thing that tipped me off that I might be #ActuallyAutistic (ie. #AuDHD) is my obsession with systems.

I updated my 10 year old blog post to add my current system for keeping and managing ideas for more elaborate drawings and paintings: neladunato.com/blog/how-to-han

Since I have a million paper sketchbooks, this is the only way to keep my all ideas where they're easy to find.

  4. It's OK to feel more comfortable not using the "good paper" & the "good pens", if it helps you to create. There is no shame in not using expensive art supplies.
Getting a good knowledge of your basics is what makes you become a better artist, eventually, not the supplies you use.

  7. mid-tier art tip:

problems with your kneaded eraser drying out? need a pleasant way to travel with it?

    use an Altoids container!

i've been carrying my kneaded eraser in a little altoids can for a year or two now, and it's still soft and pliable right out of the tin! no kneading required!

    try it out sometime!

  8. In a recent stream I was asked how to do dry brushing properly... because you don't need to use only dry paint to do it and it's actually very easy.

Dry brushing is a great way to add texture to your painting for wood, sand, water and even fur!

The video is available here: youtu.be/7kLk5pqGBVc

It's not as tricky as it sometimes sounds.

Share to spread the knowledge. Thanks!

  9. A video going over the basics of different materials and why they look the way they do. While it uses terms related to 3d (diffuse, specular, etc) this focuses on higher level theory that can be applied to 2d and 3d work #arttip #materials #vfx #gamedev youtube.com/watch?v=Kdf0rlgCq8

  10. I've done some major spring cleaning and revised all 172 of the art lessons on my website with modern info! Also added 20 Blender tutorials. See this short intro video youtube.com/watch?v=bCIWCBIfc0 and then see the new tutorials here: neilblevins.com/art_lessons/ar #arttip #vfx #gamedev #animation #illustration #conceptart #blender

  11. For students learning concept art, this lesson discusses the purpose of thumbnailing, different techniques you can use (silhouette, line, 3d, color & photos), & under what situation a certain kind of sketch might be most appropriate. #conceptart #illustration #arttip youtube.com/watch?v=cDEOUteE9g

  12. When facing the white canvas problem, take textured canvas. The more texture, the easier to read shapes that exist in your mind but need the hook to get out. #ArtTip #ProTip

  13. Here's a demo of drawing one of my spaceship doodles with traditional ink and paper, similar to the doodles in my new sketchbook. Let's all take a digital break and get back to some old-school penmanship! #illustration #arttip #conceptart youtube.com/watch?v=mR8_OfI2Ua

  14. Maybe more of a PSA than an art tutorial, but super important for students and people working in teams, please give me 3 minutes of your time as I try to convince you to "Always Use A Scale Reference When Modeling In 3D" youtube.com/watch?v=HErClZeffK #arttip #3d #vfx #3dmodeling

  15. Part 11 of my composition series on youtube, this time discussing Focal Points and Visual Paths. Learn a bunch of tips on how to lead the eye around a painting youtube.com/watch?v=MX59j9yhez #arttip #illustration #conceptart #drawing #painting

  16. Part 10 of my composition series on youtube, this time discussing various common composition types like the circle, the cross, rule of thirds, X Arrangement, radial, etc youtube.com/watch?v=Xbveb0QoZq #arttip #illustration #conceptart #drawing

  17. Found out another thing about #Inkscape that's been bugging me a lot:

When you #delete a #node with the Delete key the adjoining nodes change to kinda keep the form, which is never what I want.

But! If you delete the node with Ctrl-Del it leaves the other nodes as they are and just deletes the node (which I think should be default behavior but 🤷‍♀️).

Bonus: I learned that Ctrl-clicking a node changes node types (but not to the corner type which is weird and sad).

  18. Hit a personal milestone last night, 10,000 subscribers to my educational youtube channel. Thanks to everyone who's following along, will be adding more art related videos in the not too distant future youtube.com/artofsoulburn #arttip #arteducation #conceptart #gamedev

  19. Just a friendly reminder: use your precious watercolor paper! It can go bad and mine did. :(

The sizing deteriorates with time and it behaves horribly, not enjoyable at all.
Can be "saved" by adding watercolor ground on top or gelatine, but it's not why we bought it. Right?

So use it all! And enjoy the good stuff :)

  20. me: why is think taking so long to ink? I get that I'm rusty butt...

me: time to fix that *sets 100% zoom limit* Guess I'll see how this goes!

  21. Posted a new video lesson called "Creating An Art Bible For A Fictional Universe". It talks about what an Art Bible is, some thoughts on how they can be formatted, & goes through a part of "The Story Of Inc" Art Bible as its example. Hope you enjoy! youtu.be/X34ykTj7Hbo #arttip #arteducation #tutorial #scifi

  22. #artTip #protip, if you use feather-light pen pressure and absolutely hate using #procreate, because its apparently made for ppl who draw on their ipads like a stone carving, this is the pressure setting that made the app usable for me:

  24. Another random tip: Don't be precious about your supplies! Use them, have fun, enjoy them and create something beautiful. It would be too sad to see something you longed for just dust away in a corner why you (maybe) use something you don't enjoy as much.

Right now I'm obsessing about painting on wood and doing monochromatic studies... Does it sell? No! Do I have fun? Lots and lots!

Have a wonderful day - and drink tea!

  25. The important thing when considering what can be written off for tax purposes, is that it's for business use, not personal.

Here are some of my own examples:

    - Portfolio website hosting fees
    - Domain name renewal fee
    - New hard drive for backing up work files
    - Painting software

  26. Important reminder: if you're a self-employed professional, keep your receipts for things like supplies, research (e.g., art instruction books), and work-related software in order to write them off on your taxes.

  27. A helpful #artTip from @ArtCamp on twitter --->

    "Portfolios should:

    - focus on what you want to do
    - feature only your best work
    - not be padded out with your mediocre work
    - have your email address
    - be updated regularly
    - have big images
    - be very easy to browse
    - be easy to save images from"

I think this is not restricted only to artists.

This little graph is why artists go from feeling great to feeling like shit.
Technical ability and observation alternate causing highs and lows in perceived skill.
Once you feel it go down you just got to ride the wave

Be mindful of safety when working with traditional mediums--especially oil paints.

    🔹 Always work in a well-ventilated space!

🔹 Be careful not to get paint on your skin. Many oil pigments are toxic, and can be absorbed through your skin. Wearing gloves is a good precaution.

🔹 NEVER eat while you paint!

🔹 Never dump paint/thinner waste down the drain! It's bad for the water system.

🔹 Dispose of oily rags properly. Never leave them in a pile! They can spontaneously combust.
