Checking the #Couchsurfing hashtag, it seems like the good days of the platform are behind it anyway. Will take a look at #Warmshowers once it is back from its current downtime.

Trying out #Couchsurfing for the first time, and the UX is really weird. I am looking for hosts in a small town in northern Germany, and it will happily tell me that it has 6 hosts there. The only problem is that four of them are in a city in Denmark, and two of them are in other small towns 50 km away from the town I was looking at. Like, cool that there are options, but maybe just straight-up tell me "sorry, no one here, the closest I can do for you is X (42 km away) and Y (48 km away)".

Even weirder: looking at a city with a lot of hosts, it will just randomly throw in a host from some town in Denmark, or Spain (?!), before showing me more people from the city I was actually looking at.

Don't really understand if this is just broken, or if there is some weird reason I don't see behind this, but it doesn't inspire confidence.

It takes all kinds! I did a fair amount of #couchsurfing and hosted about 50+ travellers, and was lucky to only have one weird host, and a few annoying but harmless surfers. But, you never know. The review system definitely helps to filter out the worst of the bunch.

I was an early adopter of #couchsurfing but when I wanted to check more information about my account (hosted at least 50 people), I had to subscribe. I know that I gave them money to do that, but I had the same issue again today. I deleted my account, which meant deleting the dozens of references and memories that surfers had shared. They changed their model from hippies on sofas to a corporate AirB&B or Uber model. Sad.

I thought I was getting authentic stays. Instead, I got 90% creepy messages 😬 Here's what I learned about Couchsurfing safety

Well the new #couchsurfing app has one perk, I am starting to chat with all the lovely people I met in the last year, discussing what alternatives they have tried 🙄 but also catching up 😊

Look who crawled out from under the stone, it's #Couchsurfing! I didn't even remember I had still subscribed to their blog (thanks feed readers). I had subscribed years ago because I wanted to see if they apologized for or explained their last dick move somewhen. There were no posts until yesterday, when they pulled their next dick move. Summary: You can login, click through their new onboarding with fake data, then export your data and delete your account, at least this much was done this time.

#COUCHSURFING YES changed to #subscription #businessmodel in May #2020 so it was during the #COVID-19 pandemic, so that's a bad example for me to say (as it's an ultimatum to subscribe) but people STILL TO THIS DAY PAY and signup !

And to to #couchers surfing because #wordofmouth or active encouragement on other platforms DOESN'T EXIST MUCH!
