Gegen Ende des Podcasts über Europe’s Bet on Net Zero (McTague and Thompson 2023) staunt Tom McTague darüber, wieviel einfacher sich politische Entwicklungen verstehen lassen, wenn man sie durch die Energie-Brille ansieht. Das gilt für diese Folge ganz besonders. McTague und Helen Thompson diskutieren die Zusammenhänge des Übergangs zu erneuerbaren Energien mit geopolitischen Interessen. Dabei geht es nicht nur um Interessenpolitik, sondern um die eigentlich politische Dimension der Bildung von Akteuren in Verbindung mit der Energiepolitik. Die Europäische Union ist als Montanunion entstanden—basierend auf dem Poolen von Energie als Alternative zu Konflikten der Nationalstaaten Deutschland und Frankreich über Energie-Ressourcen. Eine Perspektive, die McTague und Thompson ansprechen, ist eine Erneuerung Europas durch ein gemeinsames Management der Stromnetze. Es geht auch um viele weitere Themen, darunter den systematischen Aufbau der Erneuerbaren in in China und den Zugang zu Metallen. Eine ganz andere Perspektive als die der meisten in der Klimabewegung, aber sehr lehrreich.
