  1. Midnight Plumage

While exploring Savannah, Georgia near the Savannah River, I spotted this bird. Since we were so close to the coast, I assumed it was a boat‑tailed grackle, but I was wrong — it’s actually a common grackle (Quiscalus quiscula).

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

  2. Quiet Firebird

This is the third image of a Baltimore Oriole I’ve posted in a week. They’re such striking birds, and their spring stopover here is brief—sometimes they don’t pause at all—so I make the most of every encounter.

  3. No‑Nonsense Oriole

I was spotted by this rather stern‑looking Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula). He seemed distinctly unimpressed with the bird feed I’d put out. A few minutes after taking the photo, I peeled an orange and set out the slices, which quickly attracted a few other orioles.

  4. Firebird in the Green

I spotted this migrant passing through—a vivid Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula). I put out pieces of the only orange I had, hoping to coax more of them in. It was a mandarin, so it didn’t last long, and I never saw who actually carried off the pieces.

With no more oranges left, I cut up an apple and set that out instead. That plan didn’t work either. Judging by the scene this morning, a raccoon probably made off with the apple slices during the night.

  5. A quotation from Joseph Addison

I value my garden more for being full of blackbirds than of cherries, and very frankly give them fruit for their songs.

Essay (1712-09-06), The Spectator, No. 477

  6. Flame Among the Leaves

This Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula) has a slender strand of fiber clinging to the tip of his beak, along with faint specks of debris scattered across his black head. The fiber might be from the orange I set out for them—a small trace of his recent visit.

A shady land deal in #BelfastME as a #ConservationEasement goes missing

A wetland in Belfast was supposed to be conserved “in perpetuity.” Instead it’s being sold as commercial property. DEP is investigating.

    By Murray Carpenter
    July 13, 2025

Excerpt: "#BankOfAmerica became the owner of the lot in 2006, when it bought #MBNA for $34 billion. In January 2025, Bank of America sold the lot at auction to #WeBuyAndResellHomesLLC, a Georgia company. According to Belfast Assessor’s Office, the lot sold for $15,750, and is assessed at $404,800.

"The new owner promptly listed the property for sale for $295,000, with no mention that it is a #wetlands #mitigation site. The ad, at CORE real estate, reads, 'Zoned commercially, the land is positioned for a variety of business ventures. Belfast is expanding, making this an ideal location for retail, office, or mixed-use development.'

"It’s hard to know how the wetland conservation project seeped through the cracks. Among the banker’s boxes of documents related to MBNA permitting in the #DEP archives, is an unsigned draft of the deed restriction, from 1997. The draft would not be enforceable, however, until it was signed and filed with the deed.

"#MaineDEP spokesman David Madore said the agency is investigating the matter.

" 'The Department’s approval of the 1997 development was contingent on the restoration and preservation of wetland functions and values on the compensation parcel,' Madore said in an email. 'The parcel was intended to be permanently preserved.'

"A Bank of America spokesperson declined to comment on the story, as did the Army Corps.

"These days, it’s an overlooked and forgotten lot adjacent to a bustling area. Someone is using an area near the road as a toilet.

"But back in the wetland, the #alders and #cattails have grown in as intended. On a warm July day, red-winged #blackbirds, common yellowthroats, and #RedEyedVireos sing. And, from deep in the wetland, comes the croaking of a #GreenFrog."

Two Baltimore Orioles (Icterus galbula) are engaged in a spirited dispute over half an orange at a bird feeder designed like a bench swing.

  17. Spotted what I think might be a black pigeon. The tail shape and orange eyes are the clues I'm following but I've been wrong before. It was eating some of the food left out for Marty Cat then flew up to the wires as I walked by.
I hope it returns to the neighborhood. I've never seen one before. She or he is beautiful! 🥰
