  1. Sweet sighting. Northern Cardinals are an everyday occurrence for us in our backyard as well as all local birding areas. But several days ago @CTGT and I had the joy of seeing our first ever cardinal fledgling, sitting in a tangle of bare, thorny branches near the ground, calling for its parents.

  2. Standing on its own. A fledgling American Oystercatcher stands on one leg on a pale, sandy beach. Its long bill is just starting to show the orange shade that is one of the species defining characteristics.

  3. Gorgeously graphic and vividly pink-legged, Black-necked Stilts are one of my favorite bird species. This female was foraging in a shallow marsh while her mate took his turn sitting on the nest.

  5. A handful of adult and juvenile Eastern Kingbirds entertained us at Blackwater NWR last year, singing and flitting back and forth between the trees along the road between marsh ponds. We finally got a shot of these two against a gorgeous blue sky.

Missing this lovely winter visitor who was at our feeders almost every day from December 26th through February 11th. Hope it has found a cozy, warmer spot to ride out the season.

  7. Three years ago I turned a corner on a hiking path and was utterly delighted to see this groundhog standing on its back legs. We quietly startled each other then went our separate ways.

  8. Birding opportunities are currently thin on the frozen snow and sleet ground, so @CTGT and I were quite excited to add this Lapland Larkspur to our lifer list last weekend. This non-breeding adult was hanging out with a Horned Lark that had a broken beak and a Dark-eyed Junco.

  9. Dreaming of the sound of waves lapping the shore, the cries of gulls and terns, and the sun’s golden warmth bathing my face on this bitterly cold #FootpathFriday.

  10. Winter has arrived with a vengeance. Thankfully, we don’t get a lot of snow and sleet (eleven-and-a-half inches now) or many morning lows in the single digits in Maryland (9 degrees currently), so I’m choosing #DelightOverDarkness and focusing on winter’s beauty.

  12. Happy #NationalBirdDay!

This Black-necked Stilt, a mother-to-be enjoying some quiet foraging time while her mate took his turn on their nest, was my favorite lifer sighting last year.

This year’s first fave lifer sighting candidate - a Western Kingbird quite far away from its home - delighted us on just the second day of the year. A quick sighting from the back on a cold, cloud-covered day made for less than ideal pictures, but you can see a bit of its distinguishing lemon yellow belly if you zoom in.
