#MarshMadness last April in search of a Least Bittern was a labor of persistence. Despite hearing its calls, after two-and-half hours of searching, we never saw it and headed home. After reading early afternoon reports that it had been spotted again, we made a return trip to the pond and were finally rewarded with a lifer sighting.

Originally the property of wealthy businessman and avid fisherman Hamilton Carr Bland, this is now the public Swan Lake Iris Gardens.
Bland originally hoped to spice up his property by planting exotic iris bulbs, however, none bloomed. Furious, he ordered the gardener to throw the expensive bulbs into the swamp.
The next year the swamp blossomed with dramatic Japanese iris flowers.
Bland also collected all seven species of swans, and eventually bequested the land, as well as more land gifted to him that was made part of the gardens, to the city of Sumter, South Carolina to keep up as a public park.
