Midnight Plumage

While exploring Savannah, Georgia near the Savannah River, I spotted this bird. Since we were so close to the coast, I assumed it was a boat‑tailed grackle, but I was wrong — it’s actually a common grackle (Quiscalus quiscula).

We don’t usually get these ones here but have been seeing several recently as well as Red-winged blackbirds. Sadly they are muscling out the smaller songbirds.

You might see a Common Grackle hunched over on the ground, wings spread, letting ants crawl over its body and feathers. This is called anting, and grackles are frequent practitioners among the many bird species that do it. The ants secrete formic acid, the chemical in their stings, and this may rid the bird of parasites. In addition to ants, grackles have been seen using walnut juice, lemons and limes, marigold blossoms, chokecherries, and mothballs in a similar fashion.

This #CommonGrackle is not happy with me as I chased it away from the feeder and it has a little attitude. They are big, have big appetites, and they can monopolize your bird feeders. No wonder so many #birdwatchers think of them as big bullies.Not my favorite bird but they have gorgeous colors.

While I don’t like freezing, I believe that nature needs the four seasons to properly thrive, so I am very happy about the frosty temperatures we are currently getting. Traffic has been ramping up and the heated baths are working. There is one lone Grackle left. I am sure it will make it even if it stays all winter but this is a first.
