It appears that the addition of the plywood top has serve the purpose I had hoped, which was reducing crashes from slippery plastic table tops. They seem much more willing to land on it now, and mostly land on it "softly." Of course, can't stop their tendency to not regulate the speed at which they land. Closest I have ever been to a magpie. Went to give out one last snack of the day, which caused most to scatter. But, a couple stayed close by, including this one who stayed on the table until I got really close. 3 days in a row with magpie swarms, though, like yesterday, it was only until they ate everything. With temp basically out as a reason, I am now focused on the details of rotating foraging hypothesis. I suspect their main foraging for the day is somewhere else, with my yard simply being a snack. They will be back to properly forage in a couple days

To my greatest of joys, the magpies have returned. Looking back at my tracking, I had set June 20 as the end of courting season, which is when most disappeared. There were stragglers for a few days after, plus what I can only call a “funeral” on the 21st, but that was it for nearly 20 days. Well, I now know that the magpies are at least still nearby. Looked out onto the table when I woke up to find a half eaten cherry had appeared.
