  1. At the bald birb nest today, the eaglet seemed to almost be double in size since last week. Hanging out at the top of the nest while mom flew overhead.

Definitely only one eaglet in the second year for this pair.

  2. Apparently Liam the Wonder Dog has finally decided to accept his increasing slowness due to age, and is reasonably content to observe the wildlife rather than try and fail to catch it.

  3. Today I saw 3 bald eagles at the nest. Both adults were there and for a brief few seconds a small fuzzy head popped up as I watched via my binoculars!

I guess that’s a “lifer” (if I cared about that sort of thing) because I have not spotted a hatchling that young before.

One of the adults flew off, but then returned about 10 minutes later to do another or finish the nest exchange while the other adult flew off to the usual perch on a tree about 30m away.

  4. A dark-eyed junco moons the camera feeder

Do I update and tag this as NSFW / sensitive?

  5. A junco flies in for a bite while a cardinal chirps?

I thought these were northern cardinal chirps when I watched and heard the video on my phone, but I think I am mistaken listening to it now.

  6. Two birds trying to share in the snow

A house finch backed in deep into the feeder to get that seed and faces off with a junco sparrow.

  7. SQUAAAAAAAWK—Someone doesn’t like sharing

I think this is the northern cardinal squawking, but I am not entirely sure.

  8. Birds in snow

A lot of activity at the bird feeder this morning.

There is not much seed remaining and its toward the back of the feeder below the snow that we got.

  9. A couple of junco sparrows squabble in front of the feeder

A not-so peaceful interaction between two dark-eyed junco sparrows in front of the feeder on a cold morning.

  10. A collection of videos captured by the camera feeder of dark-eyed junco sparrow behavior including chirps and flight from the other day.

The Juncos visited again earlier this morning and yesterday. I read that they like to scavenge on the ground rather than from hanging feeders so maybe that is why they prefer the camera feeder with its seed basin?

Because I have not come up with a good anti-squirrel cage that will also be suitable for somewhat larger birds, I only fill the base of the feeder with seed. The squirrels do come and get it, but they also seem to leave enough seed for the house finches, house sparrows, dark-eyed junco sparrows, and the one northern cardinal.

  11. First Junco at the camera feeder

A dark-eyed junco sparrow finds the camera feeder for the first time and chows down on a couple of seeds.

  12. Long-tailed tits are among the most adorable birds on earth. Here are two prime examples. 🤍 🖤 🤎 🤍

  13. Two tufted titmice in flight. One tuftie is just taking off, its wings spread wide but its toes are still in contact with the branch. That's great split-second timing! The photographer is Mark Olsen.

On the right, the second bird has completely left its branch. Love those curled-up toes! The photographer is Jeff Rosenberg.

Note that with both birds, their crests are plastered down on their heads so they're aerodynamically rounded and don't have have the characteristic "cone" shape. While some tufties do fly with their crests partially up, more often, they use their pointy heads as communication and aggression signals to other birds: "Leave my food alone!" "The exit from my territory's that way!" or "What is this strange thing I'm looking at?!" which is sometimes done when encountering a camera lens on a feeder. Normally, tufties are cheerful and social little birds, but when the crest very sharply goes way up, it can be a way of signaling irritation.

Again, photographer on the left is Mark Olsen. Photographer on the right is Jeff Rosenberg.

  16. Caught these guys chillin' and luckily hung around long enough for me to grab my camera.

Can anyone identify the brown bird? I think its a bushtit (giggity) but am not sure. These were taken in Raleigh, NC.

  18. if #ringing in the new years means #tinnitus, and you're into #birdwatching, I just learned about a new app called hearbirdsagain.org/ which divides the high frequency bird calls to shift the sound down in frequency where hearing response (still) exists.
