  1. Lift‑Off With Lunch

I’ve watched red‑bellied woodpeckers (Melanerpes carolinus) for a few years now. You can see the seed mix I use in my feeder—there are peanuts in it, but the peanut density isn’t exactly high. Somehow, though, I’ve never seen one of these woodpeckers leave with anything but a peanut. They dig through the mix with single‑minded determination until they find one.

  2. Nests and crests. @CTGT and I watched this pair of Pileated Woodpeckers work on their nest cavity. The flame effect when the sun hit their crests was awesome.

  3. In addition to Red Efts on the hike, also treated to a Pileated that didn’t fly away as when camera came out.

  4. Ahem ...

A male red‑bellied woodpecker stands perched atop a female, his wings lifted in a wide, dramatic spread that suggests either a protective stance or a courtship display. The pair balance together on a slender tree limb, their sharply detailed plumage set against a soft, blurred backdrop of blue sky and natural color, creating a striking contrast between the crisp foreground and the gentle background.

  5. Climber of the Quiet Tree

This image of a male red‑bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) is from my backyard. I’m curious about the feathers on its throat—they’re so bright and white that they almost blend into the fence behind it. It’s probably just the lighting; the sky was overcast, and sometimes I really have to crank up the ISO. Still, I like the effect. It’s not perfect, but it’s visually striking.

  6. Feathered Punk Woodpecker with Attitude

A woodpecker clings to the side of an oak tree, its head turned as it works at the bark. The bird’s crisp black‑and‑white plumage and the bright red on its crown stand out against the pale sky.

Downy Woodpeckers (Dryobates pubescens) were coming closer the year I captured this image than in the years before. This one was in the oak tree in our backyard. Even though a branch partially obscures him, the side view of his little crest is worth sharing.

  22. 5 Ways to Use #FallenTrees, According to Arborists

Don't let a fallen tree go to waste.

    By Michelle Mastro
    Published on February 18, 2026

"A dead tree lying in the middle of your yard can detract from your home’s overall beauty. But before having it hauled away and disposed of, consider the many ways you can give it a second life. From turning leaves into garden mulch to repurposing the trunk into a beautiful garden path, using fallen trees in the garden is a sustainable practice that helps your green spaces thrive. Ahead, arborists share the genius ways they’ve used fallen trees to support plants and local wildlife.

    [...]

"Consider allowing the tree to decompose naturally to support fungi and surrounding trees. 'Retaining a certain amount of dead wood within an environment can allow the surrounding trees to benefit,' Middleton says. Some fungi will take the easiest opportunity available to them, utilizing the dead tree rather than 'attacking' healthy, standing trees, he says.

"At the same time, dead wood is also incredibly valuable to #wildlife, supporting #biodiversity by providing shelter, nesting, and food sources for birds, insects, and small mammals. In fact, fallen trees are a favorite feeding spot of pileated #woodpeckers, who love the #CarpenterAnts often found there.

  27. So, I missed the #EAB update from #MaineDACF, but since I registered for the event, I was sent the link to the video update. One thing I learned is that #Woodpeckers are #EmeraldAshBorer's natural enemy. But once EAB sets in, it's too much for the woodpeckers to handle. But if it's an early infestation, they *might* be able to control it! Just another reason to #GardenForBirds and #FeedTheBirds in the winter (and my woodpecker friends LOVE the wormy suet I make for them).

Here's a screenshot from the presentation. Also, the term "blonding" mentioned in the image refers to the process of older gray bark falling off an ash tree that has an EAB infestation, leaving behind lighter-colored newer bark.

#Insects will continue to eat the tree up, while #woodpeckers & other insects hunt them. The #nutrients collected in the #DeadWood will #feed the insects & then the #birds . #Raccoons will likely use it as a highway as they walk to the pond.
