There were a lot of finches in my backyard this morning (7 June 2024). I sat under my wind‑broken patio umbrella and watched their antics for a while. I managed to snap this photo of a male house finch with a deep red mane, surrounded by four females. It turned out to be a pretty cool shot.

Sunflower Snack
There are a lot of house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus) around right now. The males seem especially bright this year — richer reds than I remember, though maybe that’s just me. This guy grabbed a sunflower seed and settled in. House finches are grazers; when they come to a feeder, they stay and eat. Other birds, like chickadees and woodpeckers, are snatchers — they grab a seed and fly off to a nearby tree to eat it. It’s an interesting contrast in feeding styles.

The house finch came to supervise.
Apparently the way to summon a house finch is to start sketching them badly and they will come to correct you.
He sang a lovely song for me. I'm pretty sure it was all cuss words but they were pretty cuss words.
