Localized oscillatory patterns, observed in many complex systems (neural networks, ecosystems, chemical reactors) have always been thought to need at least 3 species and to arise from Turing instabilities. We show that there is at least one more possible origin, namely Hopf instabilities on subcritical Turing branches, which can occur even with just 2 components.
