The new feeder (as of 2 weeks ago). Taken through a freshly-washed window. 🙂

You can tell the wind was really blowing.

  2. The humble house sparrow is still one of my favourite birds. This family either moved in recently, or they didn't like the food I put up all winter, because it would sit there until it got moldy. Now I have to refill the feeders every day (There's also jackdaws raiding them, lol)

Northern Flicker Update. The excavating seems to be all done. The egg-laying phase is probably happening now.

    Egg-laying: up to 7 days
    Incubation: 11-12 days
    Nestling period: 25-28 days
    That's a lot of work!

I'm trying not to bother the birds, but they picked a high-traffic location. High traffic for the boondocks: 12-15 vehicles pass by per day, and I'm usually out an about doing things.

A handsome couple. I think I have 3 Purple Martin pairs using the nesting gourds (50% occupancy).

  5. #Birds #BackyardBirds #Iowa #FediPajareo

The Gray Catbird. The catbirds returned to the yard a couple of days ago. They often nest in the dense, brushy tangle at the back edge of the property.

  6. #Birds #BackyardBirds #FediPajareo #Iowa

Baltimore Oriole (the bird!). The orioles more or less complete the list of migrating birds to nest around the property.

In approximate order of arrival: Grackle, Redwing Blackbird, Purple Martin, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, House Wren, Barn Swallow, Gray Catbird, Baltimore Oriole.

Keeping the new-ish blog active is tough. Suddenly, with the coming of spring, there seems to be a lot less time to work on it.

Yesterday, I monkeyed around a bit with captions on the photo galleries and added several photos to the very first post -- Birds in Flight. These two photos are in the new set. Both were taken in the front yard.

The Northern Flicker pair continues to excavate a nesting cavity. Just now, I quietly approached from behind the stump and made a little recording.

The low, wooden tunk-tunk-tunk is the flicker. Also in the recording: robins, blackbirds, another woodpecker, cardinal, and more.

Northern Flicker. It's making a cavity in an old stump right by the street, just 100 feet (30m) from the house. Seems like an unlikely nesting spot...

  10. #Birds #BackyardBirds #BarnSwallow #Iowa #Fedipajareo

The barn swallows have been back for a few days. At first just 2 or 3 of them, but today there were 6 or more.

I think I can take a better in-flight shot. On the other hand, I might spend all summer trying and not do any better.

  11. A very bad photo of the very pretty Rose Breasted Grosbeak that stopped by a few minutes ago. They usually don't hang around this area, but it's always nice to see them when they pass through.

A few days ago, there were red tulips by the birdbath. They've been replaced by a red bird.

With the purple martins showing up today, I am reminded that the hummingbirds are also on the way.

The map shows that ruby-throated hummingbirds have been seen 120 miles (190 km) south of me. So, they could be here soon!

(Edit: Better Link is for the tracker map.)

  19. The #hummingbirds are back, or at least one of them, this male ruby-throated that came by last week and has been spotted a few times since. Hopefully we’ll be seeing more of them here as their annual #migration north proceeds.

  24. #Birds #BackyardBirds #Iowa #Grackles #Blackbird

Recent arrivals: Grackles and Redwing Blackbirds. The grackles are in groups of 30 or more individuals. The blackbirds, so far, are mostly males, and I only see a few at a time.

  25. #SilentSunday

Missing this lovely winter visitor who was at our feeders almost every day from December 26th through February 11th. Hope it has found a cozy, warmer spot to ride out the season.

  26. Just spent some quality porch time counting birds for the CornellLab Great Backyard Bird Count. Got 22 species, including a Red Shouldered Hawk.

Got 15 minutes? Go count some birdies for science!
