    Mystery Bird.

So... yesterday, I was looking out the window and saw a tiny bird bouncing around in the lower branches of the pine tree. I had no idea what it was, but I was able to take a couple of OK photos.

Could it be a female Ruby-crowned Kinglet?

  2. #Birds #BackyardBirds #Hummingbird #Iowa

I've had a couple of male hummingbirds around for 3 weeks, but today was the first time that I for sure saw a female. And, while the female was on the feeder, another hummingbird was doing zoomies above the tree -- back and forth and up and down. Apparently, romance is in the air.

Northern Flicker Update. A few days ago, I noticed that a chunk of the “roof” of the nesting cavity had collapsed, leaving a 2 by 3 inch hole (5 by 7.5 cm). That stump, especially the top, is very punky.

With rain coming, I decided to help a little bit by covering the hole in the roof. Now, after 2 nights of heavy rain, it seems the birds’ are still happy in their nest.

Indigo Bunting! It's been probably 25 years since I've seen an Indigo Bunting in the yard. I was glad to get this quick photo through the window.

  6. American Goldfinch in Spring Moult

A molting male American Goldfinch perched just outside the kitchen window — and for once, everything lined up: sharp bird, clean background, and solid post-processing.

The new feeder (as of 2 weeks ago). Taken through a freshly-washed window. 🙂

You can tell the wind was really blowing.

  16. The humble house sparrow is still one of my favourite birds. This family either moved in recently, or they didn't like the food I put up all winter, because it would sit there until it got moldy. Now I have to refill the feeders every day (There's also jackdaws raiding them, lol)

  21. #Birds #BackyardBirds #FediPajareo #Iowa #Woodpecker

Northern Flicker Update. The excavating seems to be all done. The egg-laying phase is probably happening now.

    Egg-laying: up to 7 days
    Incubation: 11-12 days
    Nestling period: 25-28 days
    That's a lot of work!

I'm trying not to bother the birds, but they picked a high-traffic location. High traffic for the boondocks: 12-15 vehicles pass by per day, and I'm usually out an about doing things.

  22. #Birds #BackyardBirds #Iowa #FediPajareo

A handsome couple. I think I have 3 Purple Martin pairs using the nesting gourds (50% occupancy).

  23. #Birds #BackyardBirds #Iowa #FediPajareo

The Gray Catbird. The catbirds returned to the yard a couple of days ago. They often nest in the dense, brushy tangle at the back edge of the property.

  24. #Birds #BackyardBirds #FediPajareo #Iowa

Baltimore Oriole (the bird!). The orioles more or less complete the list of migrating birds to nest around the property.

In approximate order of arrival: Grackle, Redwing Blackbird, Purple Martin, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, House Wren, Barn Swallow, Gray Catbird, Baltimore Oriole.

Keeping the new-ish blog active is tough. Suddenly, with the coming of spring, there seems to be a lot less time to work on it.

Yesterday, I monkeyed around a bit with captions on the photo galleries and added several photos to the very first post -- Birds in Flight. These two photos are in the new set. Both were taken in the front yard.

  26. #Birds #BackyardBirds #FieldRecording #FediPajareo #Iowa

The Northern Flicker pair continues to excavate a nesting cavity. Just now, I quietly approached from behind the stump and made a little recording.

The low, wooden tunk-tunk-tunk is the flicker. Also in the recording: robins, blackbirds, another woodpecker, cardinal, and more.

  27. #Birds #BackyardBirds #Woodpecker #Iowa #Fedipajareo

Northern Flicker. It's making a cavity in an old stump right by the street, just 100 feet (30m) from the house. Seems like an unlikely nesting spot...

  28. #Birds #BackyardBirds #BarnSwallow #Iowa #Fedipajareo

The barn swallows have been back for a few days. At first just 2 or 3 of them, but today there were 6 or more.

I think I can take a better in-flight shot. On the other hand, I might spend all summer trying and not do any better.
