Northern Flicker Update. The excavating seems to be all done. The egg-laying phase is probably happening now.

Incubation: 11-12 days
Nestling period: 25-28 days
That's a lot of work!I'm trying not to bother the birds, but they picked a high-traffic location. High traffic for the boondocks: 12-15 vehicles pass by per day, and I'm usually out an about doing things.

In approximate order of arrival: Grackle, Redwing Blackbird, Purple Martin, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, House Wren, Barn Swallow, Gray Catbird, Baltimore Oriole.

The Northern Flicker pair continues to excavate a nesting cavity. Just now, I quietly approached from behind the stump and made a little recording.
The low, wooden tunk-tunk-tunk is the flicker. Also in the recording: robins, blackbirds, another woodpecker, cardinal, and more.

Mystery bird from today's #DailyWalk. This bird darted into a large multiflora rosebush at the edge of the pond. Safe inside its fortress, it let me get close enough for a photo (even on this cloudy day).
Best guess: Female Yellow-rumped warbler (Myrtle race). The beak and the eye-stripe seem to fit. AND... I saw a male in this same location last April 26.

Long tail. On the #DailyWalk yesterday, I saw this medium-sized hawk flying over the pasture. Not many details are clear in this silhouette, but what a tail!
I think it's probably a Cooper's hawk, or possibly a Sharp-shinned hawk.
