I've been feeding this #crow for the last couple weeks. Raw peanuts, and lately dog food. (RedFord salmon and brown rice).
Been leaving the food in a couple melamine plant trays set in an iron plant stand.
Blue Jays and the crow would take a peanut or two and fly off. When the dog food started, the crow would carry the tray to the ground. Pick the tray up, tilt it so the df slides off. This morning I put a dish with dog food on a concrete bird bath. Maybe the crow would eat from there instead of the ground??
Nope. I watched the crow pick up the tray and fly off to who knows where?Crow has a few feathers sticking out perpendicular from Its right wing. It's always the same crow.

Our blackbirds are damn smart and adorable.
They have figured out how to jump flop to grab food from the chickens' feeder (dammit).
We've now seen a couple of times a male blackbird (black blackbird) do the jump flop to grab food from the feeder, to then feed his partner (female brown blackbird).
They have also figured how to perch onto the hanging peanut holder and peck at he peanuts. The sparrows subsequently forage the crumbs underneath.

Wild Turkey
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, NMSaw a single (young male) turkey walking across the road in the refuge last Monday. My friend stopped the car and I tried to lean out the window to take photos. The bird was so close that my telephoto lens cut much of him off. Nonetheless you can see the fabulous feather colors, patterns, and iridescence.

[view enlarged to appreciate the hundreds of geese in flight]Another original I didn't process at the time and recently found. I chose this for #SilentSunday but the joke is on me... I was unsure if these were geese or cranes so dug up the original folder. I happened to take some video (480p from the Nikon point and shoot.) From the sound track I could identify clearly these as geese as they were far from silent in flight!

Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, NMI found a tranche of (mostly) unprocessed jpegs taken back in the heyday of the Bosque. Some, like this one are digiscoped using a small Nikon point-and-shoot. Those days we'd go down several times a season the birding was so good. I'll post more in the coming weeks.

As I was looking out of the window yesterday - a surprise visit by a small flock of King Parrots! Didn’t manage to get a photo - so found this glorious male in my archives. They were a bit quick, but I think there were a couple of males, plus a few females and juveniles.

How your #cat can contract #BirdFlu without seeing a bird
New data reveals unexpected infection pathways to #HouseholdPets
By Serena Summer
Feb 25, 2025Excerpt: "The CDC report details two confirmed cases of indoor domestic cats contracting bird flu, with both felines belonging to #DairyWorkers who had previously displayed symptoms consistent with the virus. Prior to the cats becoming ill, their owners had experienced symptoms including #vomiting and #diarrhea. Although the owners declined testing for bird flu, laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of the virus in both cats, with one eventually dying from the infection.
"This finding represents a significant development in our understanding of #AvianInfluenza #transmission, as it suggests that #humans may serve as intermediary hosts capable of passing the virus to household pets. Previously, most concern centered on direct transmission from infected birds to mammals, but these cases indicate more complex transmission patterns may exist.
"The indoor setting of these infections is particularly noteworthy, as it eliminates the possibility of direct contact with infected #WildBirds, which had been considered the primary transmission route for cats in previous outbreaks."

SITUATIONAL REPORT: Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza [#HPAI]
Date: Tuesday, February 11, 2025
Prepared by: Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry
Current Situation: The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC), the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (#DACF), and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (#MDIFW) are urging agricultural stakeholders to take precautions following recent confirmations of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in multiple wild birds in York and Cumberland Counties. While no cases have been detected in domestic flocks since March 2024, the virus remains in the environment."
Recent HPAI Activity
- MDIFW confirmed HPAI in multiple #WildBirds, including Canada geese, red-tailed hawks, and a great horned owl.
- Cases have been reported in Kennebunk, Kittery, Ogunquit, South Berwick, South Portland, and York.
- Four New England states have reported recent HPAI cases in domesticated #poultry.
- Officials have raised the risk level and strongly encourage #flock owners to implement strict #biosecurity measures.
- While HPAI has the ability to infect people and cows, there are no known infected persons or dairy herds in Maine and New England.Biosecurity and Flock Protection Measures
To minimize the risk of HPAI transmission, all commercial and backyard poultry owners are urged to:
- Keep birds indoors or in enclosed outdoor spaces to limit contact with wild birds.
- Maintain strict biosecurity, including sanitizing equipment, wearing clean clothing, and washing hands before and after handling birds.
- Avoid equipment sharing and disinfect tools between uses.
- Provide clean drinking water from municipal or well sources—avoid surface water that may be contaminated.
- Store feed securely to prevent access by wild birds and #rodents.
- Minimize farm visits and avoid areas where birds congregate.
- Monitor flocks for signs of illness and report any unusual cases.Signs of HPAI in Birds
- Sudden death without prior symptoms
- Decreased energy and appetite
- Drop in egg production or misshapen eggs
- Swelling and discoloration of head, comb, wattles, and legs
- Nasal discharge, coughing, sneezing, or diarrhea
- Neurological symptoms such as incoordinationReporting Sick or Dead Birds
- Dead or sick wild birds should be reported to MDIFW at (207) 287-8000 or via the online wildlife disease reporting form.
- Three or more dead birds in a localized area are of particular concern for statewide surveillance efforts.
- If you handle dead birds, use gloves and masks, dispose of birds properly, and wash hands immediately afterward.
- Sick or dead domestic poultry should be reported to USDA, 866-536-7593.Public Health and Food Safety Considerations
"The human health risk from HPAI remains low, but precautions should be taken:
- Avoid contact with sick or dead birds and use personal protective equipment (PPE) if exposure is necessary.
- Cook poultry, eggs, and beef to safe internal temperatures to eliminate bacteria and viruses.
- Choose pasteurized milk and dairy products for added safety.
- Monitor for respiratory symptoms if exposed to potentially infected birds or environments.Source:

New #BirdFlu variant found in #DairyCattle. Can #H5N1 be transmitted to humans? [Apparently, the answer is, "YES!"]
According to the the US Department of Agriculture, this is the first ever detection of this bird flu virus variant in dairy cattle.
by Jonathan Limehouse, February 6, 2025, updated February 7, 2025
"The variant of bird flu that killed a Louisiana resident has now been found in dairy cows. Until now, the human cases of bird flu traced to cattle have been mild, mostly #EyeInfections.
"But the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed that a strain previously found only in #WildBirds has turned up in dairy herds in #Nevada ‒ raising concerns that future human infections could be more serious.
"Bird flu has triggered a nationwide egg shortage and price hikes in recent months, as infected chickens had to be put to death. It has also coursed through dairy farms in 16 states since last March, according to the USDA, reducing milk production. More than 60 #farmworkers on both dairy and poultry farms have been infected since then, all of whom recovered.
"But one Louisiana resident died last month after contracting bird flu from a backyard flock. That person, who was older and chronically ill, but not otherwise identified, was infected with the D.1.1 variant now seen in the Nevada cows. A Canadian teenager hospitalized with bird flu in November was also infected with D.1.1.
"#D11 is common among the #starlings that migrate through #Nevada in the winter and might have carried the virus into the state, the Nevada Department of Agriculture said in a social media post.
"The USDA said it is working with the state department of agriculture to investigate the Nevada outbreak and limit its spread.
"Until last week, all bird flu in dairy herds had been identified as the B3.13 variant, which was believed to have come from wild birds in late 2023 or early 2024."
