Nests and crests. @CTGT and I watched this pair of Pileated Woodpeckers work on their nest cavity. The flame effect when the sun hit their crests was awesome.

Hey #fediknowledge !!
I was working in the garden and stumbled upon these kind of tiny cups with some small white eggs (???) in them.
What are these things and what animal made them?
Please boost!
I know there has to be some bubble in #fediverse where someone has the answer :-)

Every morning now a mistle thrush (Turdus viscivorus) outside the window collects lichen, moss, and twigs like it's the last day of sales.
Today she had a tug-of-war with a string of living ivy that lasted a good 20 seconds. She won.
It's glorious to watch.

@tksst great science communication information with additional focus on children education about #weaverbirds and their huge #social #nests, making it important to emphasize the negative impact of #selfish #individuals on the #bird #community.

🏺🦅 Spanish researchers surveyed 12 abandoned bearded vulture #nests and discovered 226 human #artifacts, some nearly 700 years old, preserved alongside animal remains. The #vultures' cliff cave nests acted as natural #museums, protecting items like medieval #shoes, crossbow bolts, and woven baskets through centuries. #Carbon dating revealed artifacts spanning from the #MiddleAges to 150 years ago.

Why a #mite of the #Parasitidae (#Mesostigmata), apparently genus #Parasitellus, seemingly attacks moth #Pyrausta #despicata (Crambidae). Parasitellus develops in #bumblebee #nests and uses them for dispersal (#phoresy) to other nests, thus they leave their hosts on blossoms and wait for new hosts to be carried to new nests. The moth was detected by the mite as a #nonsuitable #phoretic #host.

In #leafcutterant #Atta #texana nests, mite #Histiostoma #bakeri reduces harmful #fungi in detritus chambers (S.F. Wirth & J.C. Moser 2008).

Dusky-footed Woodrats (Neotoma fuscipes) build large, conical nests up to 8 feet tall in trees, on the ground, or on bluffs. Made of sticks, bark, and plant material, the nests can house multiple generations and include rooms for food storage, resting, nurseries, and protection.

She did it! It took the Eastern Phoebe just one week to rebuild her nest that was damaged over the winter.
The first photo is from 4/22 and is the finished nest.
The second is from 4/20 and shows how she started adding moss and small strands of plants to it.
And the third is from 4/15 when she started repairing the nest by building up the foundation with wet mud.
This must be an ideal protected nesting spot to be chosen 6 straight years.

LeConte’s Thrashers build their nests of sturdy sticks & place them in thick, often pointy vegetation such as this cholla. They line the nest with soft white fluff, & when they are just getting ready to lay their eggs, they decorate the rim with fresh yellow flowers.

Excellent paper describing the initial and subsequent detections of #Vespa #mandarinia (a.k.a. #Asian #giant #hornet or #murder #hornet).
A fact I wasn't aware of: researchers and pest managers used #radio-tagged, live-captured hornets to lead them back to #nests (usually found in #red #alder cavities).
Tons of other valuable information in the paper as well.
