  1. Lift‑Off With Lunch

I’ve watched red‑bellied woodpeckers (Melanerpes carolinus) for a few years now. You can see the seed mix I use in my feeder—there are peanuts in it, but the peanut density isn’t exactly high. Somehow, though, I’ve never seen one of these woodpeckers leave with anything but a peanut. They dig through the mix with single‑minded determination until they find one.

  2. Ahem ...

A male red‑bellied woodpecker stands perched atop a female, his wings lifted in a wide, dramatic spread that suggests either a protective stance or a courtship display. The pair balance together on a slender tree limb, their sharply detailed plumage set against a soft, blurred backdrop of blue sky and natural color, creating a striking contrast between the crisp foreground and the gentle background.

  3. Climber of the Quiet Tree

This image of a male red‑bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) is from my backyard. I’m curious about the feathers on its throat—they’re so bright and white that they almost blend into the fence behind it. It’s probably just the lighting; the sky was overcast, and sometimes I really have to crank up the ISO. Still, I like the effect. It’s not perfect, but it’s visually striking.

  4. Hey you, I hope you’re having a nice day.

Here’s a red bellied woodpecker from the old place. They are all over the new neighborhood, and have a LOT to say. But our feeders aren’t up yet.

  6. Showdown on the Feeder

This isn’t my best photography, and the composition isn’t exactly something to brag about. But it has that X-factor—a tense moment unfolding at the bird feeder between a male, red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) and a male brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater). I don’t even recall taking the photo; I only noticed it this morning while sorting through my collection, deleting shots I thought I’d never use. This one almost got the axe—until I paused and thought, "Wait a minute…"

  7. One reason I feed #birds year round is because I love to watch them bring their #fledglings to the #feeders. Here's a male #redbelliedwoodpecker feeding his baby boy on a tree next to the feeder. And a female #downywoodpecker feeding her baby boy, and then a picture of the baby having a go at the feeder himself. And finally, a female #pileatedwoodpecker who brought her boy and girl to the feeder and fed them on the deck railing. #birding #birdsofmastodon #nature #photography
