Feathered Punk Woodpecker with Attitude
A woodpecker clings to the side of an oak tree, its head turned as it works at the bark. The bird’s crisp black‑and‑white plumage and the bright red on its crown stand out against the pale sky.
Downy Woodpeckers (Dryobates pubescens) were coming closer the year I captured this image than in the years before. This one was in the oak tree in our backyard. Even though a branch partially obscures him, the side view of his little crest is worth sharing.

These two were enjoying their shared meal while I was cleaning out the birdbath - they seemed unusually unworried by my presence so I took the opportunity to grab my camera and get some shots. Then another Downy flew in and broke up dinner :-( -

These little critters are fearless. I'm standing about 6 feet from the feeder here, filming with my iPhone. This is why I have to actually *walk around the feeders* to check them before I take them down to refill.
Just after I take this I turn around and there's one chasing a hawk off.

People sometimes think this drumming is part of the birds’ feeding habits, but it isn’t. In fact, feeding birds make surprisingly little noise even when they’re digging vigorously into wood.

It's just a normal late spring day at the feeders. The recent fledglings, like this #housefinch and #downywoodpecker, are caring for themselves. One reason I feed #birds year round is because I love to watch them bring their #fledglings to the #feeders. Here's a male #redbelliedwoodpecker feeding his baby boy on a tree next to the feeder. And a female #downywoodpecker feeding her baby boy, and then a picture of the baby having a go at the feeder himself.
