A Downy Woodpecker grips a lichen-marked trunk, perfectly built for life on bark: pointed bill, curved claws, and crisp black-and-white feathers. 🪶

A Downy Moment
When I took this photo, I was watching this downy woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens) walking down a thick oak tree branch, when it suddenly stopped and turned as if to enjoy the sunrise.

Feathered Punk Woodpecker with Attitude
A woodpecker clings to the side of an oak tree, its head turned as it works at the bark. The bird’s crisp black‑and‑white plumage and the bright red on its crown stand out against the pale sky.
Downy Woodpeckers (Dryobates pubescens) were coming closer the year I captured this image than in the years before. This one was in the oak tree in our backyard. Even though a branch partially obscures him, the side view of his little crest is worth sharing.

Winter dining at its finest. 🖤❤️
This little Downy Woodpecker stopped by the suet feeder and made my morning. He's the smallest woodpecker in North America, but he’s got big energy. 😂

A male downy woodpecker clings to a smooth trunk, tail braced and bill angled upward as it studies the bark. Black-and-white patterning and the red nape spot stand out against soft fall color. 🪶 Follow for more birds, bunnies and other cute critters

Winter Backyard Birding
Black oil sunflower seeds transformed my backyard into a small avian metropolis.
Today I spotted this Downy Woodpecker. At some point it ruffled the feathers on the top of its head and it looked like it was wearing hair gel.

Downy in the Dried Leaves
Charlie and I sat outside this morning, watching for birds. There weren’t many about—just a couple of chickadees and sparrows. Off in the distance, I spotted a chubby, drowsy-looking Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens), clinging quietly to a tree.

Life Among the Leaves
This is a Downy Woodpecker—Dryobates pubescens. I captured this image a couple of years ago and was thrilled when the bird ventured closer than they typically do around here. It felt like a rare moment of trust, a quiet gift from the canopy.

Downy Dispatch
While sitting outside with Charlie this morning, coffee in hand and birds under watch, I nearly missed the quiet passage of a tiny downy woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens) threading through the shadows of a nearby oak. He moved like a whisper—mostly concealed from my camera’s view—but I managed a couple of quick shots before he vanished into the canopy. I say he because in the first image, there’s just the faintest glint of red on the back of his head—a ceremonial mark, subtle but sovereign.

Downy on the Barkline
I captured some solid photographs the morning I took this shot—mostly of the usual suspects. But this Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens) made an appearance, and I managed to get my best Downy photos to date. I also spotted a Pileated Woodpecker briefly perched on a dead tree, but it slipped deeper into the forest before I could get a bead on it.

The Quiet Tapper
Here’s a Downy Woodpecker (Picoides pubescens) I photographed a couple of years ago. I’m always a bit surprised I don’t see more of them—they show up now and then, but never in abundance. This one was hard at work chiseling into the tree. If you look closely, you can spot a chunk of bark or wood flying over his head—a frozen moment of motion mid-tap.
