Coronis,

Thank you for sending the crows

I know that it was out of love.

I know that you knew I needed them, Love,

As surely as God sits above

And watches the murder from up in His sky.

And also that I must die.

The three of us have a playdate at eight.

But at seven we all shed our clothes.

The Story of Apollo, Coronis and the Crow

Asclepius is the god of healing. Which is apt for me in more ways than you know as I am healing from 47-years of trauma/abuse and dysfunction which has manifested in a debilitating nervous condition.

Tagging for #SolarPunkSunday, since many of us are bird/nature enthusiasts.

I looked out the window, and squirrel friend was giving me the, "I'm hungry! Where's my breakfast!" look, so I rushed outside with some walnuts and hazelnuts. When I came back into the house, crow friend was eating the hazelnuts. So I quickly put together some crow food and brought that outside (corn, peanuts, sunflower seeds, leftover cat food, suet bits). Then I came back into the house and my Blue Jay buddy had beaten everyone to the feast, but now the crow is back with a friend!

So, I missed the #EAB update from #MaineDACF, but since I registered for the event, I was sent the link to the video update. One thing I learned is that #Woodpeckers are #EmeraldAshBorer's natural enemy. But once EAB sets in, it's too much for the woodpeckers to handle. But if it's an early infestation, they *might* be able to control it! Just another reason to #GardenForBirds and #FeedTheBirds in the winter (and my woodpecker friends LOVE the wormy suet I make for them).

Here's a screenshot from the presentation. Also, the term "blonding" mentioned in the image refers to the process of older gray bark falling off an ash tree that has an EAB infestation, leaving behind lighter-colored newer bark.

So, we have three ravens who come regularly mid-morning pretty much every day. I leave them "treats" under the big maple tree, but wanted to leave them something special today. Turns out, they LOVE mealworms (as do our Woodpecker pals)! Yum!!!

8 Foods You Should Never Feed Garden Birds

Avoid these harmful feeding mistakes.

By Wanda Sachs, Published: Dec 8, 2025

"Winter is prime bird-feeding season. As natural food for backyard birds grows scarcer, many people come to the rescue by leaving out a few tempting treats.

"Because birds can — and will — eat whatever they can get, it’s up to us to make sure we don’t offer them anything that might harm them.

"Before you panic and throw a guilt-ridden glance at your garden feeder, a few words of reassurance: most of the items we’re used to giving to birds are perfectly safe. This includes traditional bird foods available at pet supply shops, such as seed mixes, sunflower hearts and suet balls, but also some select kitchen staples.

" 'There are also useful and healthy additions to put out which most households would already have — a good example being apples,' says Lucy Taylor from Vine House Farm Bird Foods. This is great treat for many backyard birds over the winter months.

"The real red flag is your own food scraps. 'Most of the food types we keep in our homes for our own consumption are not suitable for garden birds, and indeed, some can be very harmful to them,' Lucy reveals. To keep visiting birds safe this season, here are the items you should never offer."

For those who don't want to use suet, here's a vegan recipe for "seed cakes" (I have not tried this out...)

DIY Fall Craft: Bird Seed Ornaments
By Liz Updated: January 24, 2012

"Ingredients:

4 cups Pennington Wild Bird Food {the Finch Blend works well because it appeals to a wide variety of birds}
3/4 cup Flour, all-purpose
3 tablespoons Corn syrup, light
1/2 cup Water
Cookie Cutters
Yarn
Straw {not pictured}

Instructions:

In a large bowl add 3/4 cup flour

Add 3 tablespoon corn syrup and 1/2 cup water

Add 4 cups Pennington Wild Bird Food

Mix until well blended

Line your work surface with wax paper. Press the bird seed mixture into the cookie cutters. Use a straw to make a hole, be sure not to make the hole close to the top or the ornament will break.

Let dry 4-6 hours or overnight, turn them often to dry on both sides."

I remember we had a small pine tree in the backyard of my childhood home. I would decorate the tree with edible ornaments, which my grandmother helped me make (including suet cakes). And as I showed in a previous post, an old coat tree or other secure structure can work just fine!

Decorate an Outdoor Christmas Tree With #EdibleOrnaments for the Animals

December 29, 2019

Decorating an outdoor Christmas tree with edible ornaments is a wonderful way to bring holiday cheer to your yard while providing a feast for birds, squirrels, and other animals.

It’s eco-friendly, fun, and connects us with nature in a heartwarming way.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to creating a festive outdoor tree that’s both beautiful and beneficial for wildlife.

Some ideas:
- Pinecone feeders
- Popcorn garlands
- Fruit slices
- Suet cakes
- Nut and seed wreaths

[I don't think the peanut butter recipe is doable -- grab a pinecone instead!]

So, I made some suet ornaments last year (and yes, those are dried worms in the round ones). I had to tie up the round ones with wire to secure them, but the stars I just poked a hole through the top, and that seemed to work fine. A bit more work than just making suet cakes (which is why I bought a couple of commercial suet cakes -- to have molds). I also made popcorn strings with cranberries and dried apple slices, and made up some pine cones filled with peanut butter and bird seed.

I probably won't all that this year (busy with making hand butter and other holiday gifts), but my feathered friends will still have plenty to eat! (Well, maybe I'll make up a popcorn string again...)

@MaQuest Cool! I made something similar last year using hand-rendered suet (instead of lard). I'll be posting about that next week!

There is an older lady in my town who doesn’t give a feck that she’s not allowed to feed the pigeons, she regularly empties a bag of food and says “whoops” if anyone says anything. It’s not me. I love her. #birds #pigeons #feedthebirds
