#Cheese Lovers Unite: The Benefits of Full-Fat #Dairy Documented in #Study Without Cholesterol Rise or Weight Gain
"participants who ate more dairy saw improvements in #bloodpressure and had higher intake of #calcium, #protein and vitamin D.. The physical structure of dairy #foods affects how the #nutrients within are digested and how they impact the body."
👉 Small but significant randomized study that will hopefully be expanded soon!😊

  2. Analysis of a large dataset where both microbiome species diversity and nutrient diversity were measured on the same samples, followed by experimentation, shows that increasing nutrient diversity can be associated with reduced microbial diversity, contrary to expectations. The more complex nutrient environment evidently triggers greater competition, resulting in biodiversity loss.

  4. Mapping Multifunctionality In Remote Patagonian Forest Landscapes Reveals High-Value Ecosystems Beyond Protected Areas

H/T @Peter Potapov | Researcher at the World Resources Institute (WRI)
“This paper is] a strong example of multifunctionality analysis applied to conservation planning. The study mapped six ecosystem functions, including carbon storage, nutrient availability, water regulation, erosion control, habitat quality, and ecological connectivity. [The author] combined satellite data, field soil sampling, and spatial modeling for this comprehensive analysis.
    Two findings stand out.
    1. Old-growth forests had the highest multifunctionality index of any land cover type.
    2. 78.5% of the top multifunctionality hotspots fall outside the region's protected areas, even though PAs already cover more than 54% of the territory.
Together, these results make a clear case for expanding conservation of the remaining Intact Forest Landscapes and primary forests in Patagonia and elsewhere…”

“Remote forest landscapes provide critical references for understanding ecosystem functions (EFs) under low anthropogenic pressure, yet their capacity to sustain multiple EFs simultaneously remains poorly understood. [They] assessed landscape multifunctionality in western Patagonia by integrating satellite indicators, field data, and spatial modeling. Six EFs (carbon storage, nutrient availability, water regulation, erosion control, habitat quality, and ecological connectivity) were mapped, and their spatial relationships and hotspot distribution within and outside protected areas (PAs) were analyzed. Old-growth and secondary forests showed the highest functional performance. Strong synergies (ρ ≥ 0.6) between carbon storage and nutrient availability covered >50% of the landscape, whereas strong trade-offs (ρ ≤ –0.6) were spatially limited ( < 6%). Notably, 78% of multifunctionality hotspots occurred outside PAs, indicating that high-functional-value areas extend beyond formal conservation boundaries. These findings reveal spatial mismatches between multifunctionality and protection status and provide a replicable framework for integrating multifunctionality into conservation planning under global change…”

  6. @appassionato you forgot to mention that they'd need to be properly processed, otherwise all of them would help you take up "negative" amounts of minerals, by them being strongly bound to phytic acid. Negative because they'll not only bind their own minerals, but also that of everything consumed with it. Let alone other antinutrients. All of that health halo is not inherent to any of them.
They all need quite intense processing. #nutrition #health #nutrients #antinutrients

  16. RE: scicomm.xyz/@tfardet/109370756

Yesterday's presentation at #PintOfScience was very nice, but it reminded me again how little press most agricultural and food topics get (unless there's a trendy new sanitary issue).

So it just made me feel like boosting this old thread and my presentation at the Fediverse Solstice School again, in case anyone wants to read about sustainable agriculture and fertilization.

  18. @dc "Spinach does not market its iron content" - rightly so, as it has a quite low bioavailability. Most of it just gets pooped out instead of taken up by the body.

Funny to pick one of the low-performer-iron-providers in the plant world as the poster child example.

It'll easily exceed your daily required dose of oxalates though.

  20. Is global warming tipping key Atlantic ocean currents towards ‘collapse’?

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a vast system of ocean currents that helps to distribute heat around the world.

By transporting warm water from the #tropics northwards and cold water back southwards, the #AMOC keeps #Europe warm and plays a role in controlling global #rainfall.

It connects into an even larger network of #ocean currents that continuously moves #water, #nutrients and #carbon around the world.

Now, the AMOC is under threat from human-caused #ClimateChange, as warming seas, melting ice and increased rainfall upset the temperature and salt balance of the North Atlantic.

  25. Nutrient Rich Foods for Muscle Gain 💪🥗

Nutrient-rich foods matter for muscle gain because building muscle is not just about eating more food or getting enough protein.

Your body also needs the vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, healthy fats, and overall quality nutrition that support training performance, recovery, hormone function, digestion, and muscle repair.
