After designing and running a workshop on urban biodiversity where I learned a lot about city bats, I now see them all the time. And can recognise species I didn't know.
For example today I found a wing of a common Noctule (la : Nyctalus noctula, fr : la Noctule commune, de : der Große Abendsegler) in the street! Pretty cool.
They're Vienna's biggest bats, and they're pretty common overall.
The photo is slightly 'gory', since it's really just a wing. And not in super good shape even.

I've been checking a pond at the local park for dragonflies, but it also attracts many other bugs. For example, this wasp was looking for mud to build it's nest! The species (Sceliphron caementarium) has been introduced in Europe more than 50 years ago and is thriving now.

Mama Bunz has one kit this year, safely tucked away under my next door neighbor's wood pile. I got a peek a few days ago, when Wee Bun came out into the grass, to play in the rain.
Got just this one lucky shot of Mama Bunz this afternoon, as she double-dog-dared me to attempt to park my car in my own backyard. She doesn't like the car and clearly wants me to just adapt to parking way up the gravel driveway, close to the street.

A cute lady #beetle for #insektenSamstag !
It's a genus I had not seen/known before, Henosepilachna. Species in this genus are phytophagous, unlike the most commonly seen lady beetles. I think they're also a bit cuter.

Poor Syd, having no idea that eviction day had arrived, started Saturday morning by bringing in another light and checking out the locals i.e. me. The PD tracked Syd's movements during the morning but by midday, we were ready for the eviction. I went out and Syd, possibly understanding the human with work gloves and bin liner wasn't a good sign, scarpered down the wall to the floor below.

Wednesday night after work I noticed that one planter had been tipped on its side and there was more fake plant sticking out from under another one. This was the point I realised what was happening. The plot for Syd 2: The Revenge was revealing itself to me. The wee bugger was building a nest under my planter. The local PD turned up but couldn't find anyone home.

Three years ago, I was invaded by Syd the squirrel and it's pals for about a month and half. They ate every spring bulb and killed most of the rest of everything else by digging up the planters. The cats and I had a love/hate relationship with them cos they were fun to watch but did make going outside more dangerous as the cats 100% would go over the railing to chase them #cityWildlife #squirrelsOfMastodon

It’s a bird city
Cork City, where birds have become incredibly adept at turning human carelessness into dining opportunities.
Urban-adapted birds like the seagulls and crows photographed here have developed significantly different behaviours compared to their rural counterparts. City-dwelling seagulls often show reduced fear responses to humans and have learned to time their foraging around peak human activity periods, such as lunch hours when dropped food is most available.
Crows, meanwhile, have demonstrated remarkable problem-solving abilities in urban environments and can even learn to associate specific locations with regular food sources. Studies have shown that urban bird populations often have different dietary compositions, stress hormone levels, and even song patterns compared to rural birds, reflecting their adaptation to city life and the constant presence of human activity.
