  1. Suddenly guessed that #MerlinApp might have another use.

It had just identified chickadees as singing nearby, so I selected the chickadee ID, turned up my volume, and played its sample calls.

Well, instant chickadee central! One even landed on my outstretched fingers. Had never experienced that before!

"closely related species with overlapping habitats tend to diverge in traits—such as appearance and call—to reduce competition or costly #hybridization between different species."

  3. After 3 days of blustery winter weather it was nice to get a #hike in at #PioneerTower along the #GrandRiver in #Kitchener, #Ontario.

We hiked 8.8KM along the river & spotted some #birds that we thought would have migrated south by now:

    #GreatBlueHeron (what???)
    #CommonMergansers
    #Robins (AKA Christmas Robins LOL)

We also spotted these year-round birds:
    #CanadaGeese
    #CommonGoldenEye
    #Chickadees
    #Mallards
    #BaldEagle (Juvenile)
    #RedTailHawks
    #SongSparrow
    #Merlin

    A great day indeed!

  4. December is a #Blizzard in #Wyoming and a #Gale in on the #Lakes
    & the #Berkshires #Frosted like a plate of #Cupcakes.

    It is #Bare #Trees & #Evergreens.

It is ground #Pine, older than the hills where it grows,

    It is a stiff-tailed young #Squirrel scrambling up an #Oak #Tree...

    It is #Ice on the #Pond, #Lichen on the #Rock, a #Flock of #Chickadees at the #Dooryard #Feeder.

  5. By way of #Introduction, I am an #Academic #Ornithologist, who uses #Genetic and #Genomic tools coupled with #FieldStudies to understand wild organisms. I work with both #Undergraduate and #Masters students to investigate varied questions about #Loons, #Chickadees, #WhireThroatedSparrows, #Giraffes, #Whales, and #Wildebeest. Hopeful to participate in a non-toxic virtual community of challenging but considerate folks. Cheers!
