A red-breasted nuthatch gives me the "sup?". A black-capped chickadee looks like it's posing for the photo. A red-winged blackbird looks scrungly. And a dark-eyed junco eyes its next seed delivery.

PASTELES DE BARRO
Cuando piso la rivera de juncos
se aparece el espectro de un padre
que jamás existió y que armaba arcas
bíblicas mientras fumaba sentado
en sillas de playa. También ese juego
cruel de la piara de niños, la fascinación
por la línea de sangre dibujada en el lomo,
por el dolor asomando en los cuerpos iguales,
perla que chirría en los labios fruncidos:
el juego de la vara, de flagelar
a los primos y reir sin comprender
por qué esa diversión es adecuada.Cuando ahora tomo un junco
y lo hago silbar siento pena
por no haber podido defenderme
de los rituales para esculpir niños.
Pero también comprendo lo que fui
y cómo la inercia se reviste de deseo.
Hoy azotaría a esos fantasmas
que no quisieron mostrarme el mundo
abierto y lleno de valles borrosos
donde vivir

A couple of birds I spotted at a city park up in the hills on the peninsula today.
The place I was going to go hiking, I discovered, requires advance parking reservations now. (Maybe next weekend?) So instead of a little Pokemon Go at the beginning and a long walk with sightseeing, bird watching and iNat photos, I ended up taking a short walk with a lot of Pokemon Go, not much sightseeing, and at least a slightly different batch of birds even if the plants were all either cultivated or the same weeds I'd see near home.
The first one I wasn't sure of, but iNat thinks it's a thrush of some sort, and someone narrowed it down to a robin. I don't see them much down in the lowlands.
Dark-Eyed Juncos, though -- I see those all over at the right time of year, just not usually as many as I saw today!
