I refilled the suet feeder this afternoon, having seen Bluebirds on it.
No sooner than I returned indoors, this male Eastern Bluebird showed up to grab a few beaks-full.
Mrs. Bluebird also showed up. Her colors are so drab compared with her mate's it's almost like they're different species!
We've seen Bluebirds around the yard all winter and now into spring. They're apparently nesting nearby though I doubt it's in a nest box I set up!

Our first group of visiting ducks took off recently only to be replaced by six new migrants! Using our pond as a migration layover, three male and three female Lesser Scaubs were paddling about this afternoon. This photo shows one of the boys stretching his wings.

Here's a female Downy Woodpecker using her stiff tail feathers for stability as she examines oak nooks and crannies for insects and spiders. She holds on with her zygodactyl feet – two toes pointing forward and two toes pointing backwards – a woodpecker characteristic that's uncommon in birds.

As November marches on, it definitely feels like fall now but some of the trees still have leaves on, and temperatures are also still not really cold. The yard still is slim pickings when it comes to birds, but there are several Juncos around, I have seen Goldfinches again, and the Blue Jays continue to provide entertainment. A fun visitor arrived yesterday, a lone Robin. Today, I also saw one lone Grackle. Maybe there will be some fall migration sightings in this backyard after all. It is a weird fall, it is colder but the trees are not there yet, they are still all green! Calendars are still on the hold (except for desk ones) but I hope to get them all out by the end of the week.

Rosebreasted #Grosbeaks are great summer guests. I love their melodic songs and their mellow attitude. They are generally not one for lots of poses, they just sit down and chow down, but these portraits were fun because you see a bit more of their personality. To me, they always look a bit like they just woke up because they move slowly 😆
