A fun visitor arrived yesterday, a lone Robin. Today, I also saw one lone Grackle. Maybe there will be some fall migration sightings in this backyard after all. It is a weird fall, it is colder but the trees are not there yet, they are still all green! Calendars are still on the hold (except for desk ones) but I hope to get them all out by the end of the week.⁠

I always like it when birds look distinguishable, have odd markings or behavior that I recognize. This Red-winged Blackbird seems to be growing new wings on his shoulders, and I think it looks really cool and dramatic how the sheaths are slowly turning into real feathers. He did like to present himself properly, too.

Two cuties to go into the weekend. The #Bluebirds are visiting every day but she has still not started to build yet. I recognize her by her furrowed brow. Today, the male visited the box a lot, checking to see if things are ok, and the female seems to have checked to see if she likes the atmo in the area. The Bluebirds also came over today. This year’s couple is gonna be Johnny and June. The male was around more frequently in the last couple of weeks but the female has started to come around more too. I am expecting her to start nest building soon but I also hope she takes her time because winter is not over yet.⁠

March is well on its way into spring, and it is noticeable when you step outside right away. The #RedwingedBlackbirds and Grackles have even started to puff up already, and it is glorious to listen to and watch. The #Titmice have also become a lot more vocal, and the #Goldfinches are turning more and more yellow, changing into summer feathers. It is just so lovely to see the changes.

A #CoopersHawk has been hanging around, trying to find prey in the yard, without much luck so far. Yesterday, he took a seat on the camera, and then this fun photo came about. It is a good example to learn one of the features of the Cooper’s Hawk - its rounded tail feathers and the broad white tail tip.

I am so happy to see that the #Titmice have found their way back here. They are not just totally adorable but also a lot of fun to watch and listen to. In the spring, you can hear their surprisingly loud #PETERPETERPETER sounding through the air. Right now, they sound a lot like Chickadees, making grumpy little noises when they are not happy with the spread or notice competition.

One good part about being very meticulous and passionate about making sure the Bluebirds can nest safely is that they may return in fall and winter. They are showing up again, and some still have the baby specks showing through. I like to pick individuals, and one of the girls looks like she has very pronounced “jowls”.

Meet The Jackhammer 😆 This American Red Squirrel is one of the feistiest critters I have here, I often see him/ her chasing the bigger squirrels around. And he is guarding that branch. Apparently, the rattle serves to identify himself to others.

While I don’t like freezing, I believe that nature needs the four seasons to properly thrive, so I am very happy about the frosty temperatures we are currently getting. Traffic has been ramping up and the heated baths are working. There is one lone Grackle left. I am sure it will make it even if it stays all winter but this is a first.
