I like this time of the season when the young birds start to get adult feathers and look a bit patchworky. Young Redwinged Blackbirds are very pretty with their peachy faces and pink beak corners. And here is an assortment of bird moms. When I was a new birdwatcher, I mistook the parent birds for the babies because they look so unkempt, you can see this here on the #Chickadee, but Bluebirds and many other go through the same. It takes a lot of energy to raise tiny baby birds, which is why they all look a bit scraggly, as the summer proceeds. The #Grosbeaks and RWBB will also soon bring their fledglings. Rosebreasted #Grosbeaks are great summer guests. I love their melodic songs and their mellow attitude. They are generally not one for lots of poses, they just sit down and chow down, but these portraits were fun because you see a bit more of their personality. To me, they always look a bit like they just woke up because they move slowly 😆 ⁠

Guessing from the local birding groups, Michigan is bursting with Orioles and Hummingbirds but I have not seen either yet. I think the Orioles are soon to arrive but given recent years, I am not counting on a lot of hummer activitiy anytime soon. I did hear the House Wren sing today, and #Grosbeaks are around. Here is one, and two weird occurances from this week - a Grack with an injured beak and a MoDo with an egg stuck to its leg. We are all confused here! Happy weekend! #birds #Ostdrossel

Hormones are beginning to rage, resulting in an amazing symphony of calls and melodies by the competing males. March is well on its way into spring, and it is noticeable when you step outside right away. The #RedwingedBlackbirds and Grackles have even started to puff up already, and it is glorious to listen to and watch. The #Titmice have also become a lot more vocal, and the #Goldfinches are turning more and more yellow, changing into summer feathers. It is just so lovely to see the changes.
