Angus McSix – Angus McSix and the All-Seeing Astral Eye Review By TwelveWhen last we saw the mighty power metal heroes of Angus McSix, they were a fledgling group with a noble aim and a mighty quest: the titular starlord offered promises of adventure and whimsy, with epic aims and a glorious future that had nothing whatsoever to do with Gloryhammer, thank you for asking. Angus McSix could do no wrong on his epic trajectory. Then Thomas Winkler (vocals and the titular Angus McSix) opted to leave the band after their debut, so now McSix’s brother Adam (Samuel Nyman, Manimal) will lead in his stead. So that was a surprise. Still, I have nothing against a new hero, so, like Adam himself, I’m happy to roll with the punches and see what Angus McSix have up their sleeves for their descriptively-titled sophomore, Angus McSix and the All-Seeing Astral Eye.
Unsurprisingly, the core of the Angus McSix sound is pretty much the same. Nyman even sounds uncannily like Winkler on vocals, and the band’s approach to “join our D&D session, the drinks are already here” metal is largely unchanged. It’s a fairly open session too; joining Angus McSix are Rhapsody of Fire (“I Am Adam McSix”), Van Canto (“Dig Down”), Turmion Kätilöt (“Techno Men”), and Freedom Call (“The Power of Metal”).1 Winkler himself makes a brief appearance in opener “6666” for just long enough to say “help me brother, for I am trapped in a block of ice”2 and pass the torch to Adam. It’s a big number3 too, with exactly the kind of over-the-top, bombastic chorus and structure that made Angus McSix and the Sword of Power such a great album. It seems at first that Angus McSix has not missed a step; they pick up exactly where they left off, which is fine by me.
Unfortunately, the rest of the album is not so consistent, with the songwriting oscillating between classic Angus McSix and shakier ground. In particular, the guitars are pushed way back in the mix. The keyboards are similarly brought way up, and, in contrast to the previous album, focused on synths rather than orchestrations, giving several songs a vague ’00s-dance-pop-meets-power-metal feel. “Techno Men,” for example, plays to the industrial metal feel the Turmion Kätilöt singers bring to the song. The chorus, however, is classic Angus McSix, with Nyman singing his heart out on catchy vocal melodies this band does so well. Still, without a strong guitar presence—and the drums don’t pack much punch either, I’m sad to say—a lot of Angus McSix and the All-Seeing Astral Eye feels passive. “I Am Adam McSix” and “Dig Down” are good examples of this; in both songs, Angus McSix slow things down a bit, but only the latter one brings the energy needed to maintain an adventurous feel. This poppier Angus McSix can be a little hit-or-miss.
One of said misses was really unexpected: contrary to their debut, it feels like Angus McSix are trying to be funny. Many of the narrations are intentionally silly; at one point, a narrator describes Adam’s aims as “utterly impossible,” “even more impossible,” and “all in all, a rather questionable plan, except it wasn’t even a plan” (this all from “The Power of Metal,” an otherwise strong song that would be at home on an Avantasia record). Songs like “Ork Zero” embrace the inherent silliness of Angus McSix’s storytelling without overtly acknowledging it and largely succeed; when they do, it falls flat. I love the story of the uber-ork with a heart of gold, but why do Van Canto comment of Adam, “honestly, his tune is really catchy”? Does the phrase “orkish mumbo jumbo” have to appear at all? These feel like unneeded distractions from a group that actually does storytelling fairly well.4
There are great moments and baffling moments on Angus McSix and the All-Seeing Astral Eye. I strongly believe we need more fun in metal and adore Angus McSix for their success in that department. But I feel they missed a step here, leaning too far away from solid songwriting and too much into on-the-nose humor. I remain fully in Angus—and Adam—McSix’s corners, and will be back for the next chapter. But I hope things will feel more like they did back in the day.

Allegaeon – The Ossuary Lens Review
By Maddog
Allegaeon’s six albums have received tumultuous marks in these halls. After their fantastic 2010 debut Fragments of Form and Function broke the score counter, Allegaeon sank as low as a 2.0 for 2016’s Proponent for Sentience in the eyes of then-tadpole GardensTale. While their latest outing recovered to a more respectable score, Allegaeon’s techy brand of melodeath has polarized socialites and critics alike. The band excelled with their riffier onslaughts and soaring melodies, but fell for the forbidden fruit of proggy excess. The Ossuary Lens showcases a leaner, meaner Allegaeon. I won’t be listening to it in a decade, but it’s a worthy soundtrack for today.
Allegaeon have trimmed their bloat but not their ambitions. For the uninitiated, Allegaeon’s brand of death metal resembles a noodlier Arsis, with its melodicism matched only by its technicality. That said, Allegaeonites will recall that these Coloradans would rather cover Yes or Rush than classic death metal. Allegaeon’s career has sometimes descended into a vulgar display of prog, combining protracted tracks with a penchant for flamenco breaks. These proggy elements live on, as Allegaeon gallops from punchy riffs to melodic leads to clean jams and back again. However, The Ossuary Lens displays newfound restraint. At 45 minutes, this is the band’s shortest album by a full eight minutes. Allegaeon’s escapades no longer leave a salty aftertaste, and the band’s forays into other genres no longer feel like pleas for a yardstick. The Ossuary Lens preserves its identity without getting lost in its own reflection.
Accordingly, The Ossuary Lens hits across both its bigly riffs and its creative tangents. The album’s fierier cuts are a refreshing return to form, with “The Swarm” reviving Elements of the Infinite’s infectious riffcraft. As hoped, these sections still ooze technicality, as guitarists Greg Burgess and Michael Stancel dominate their fretboards even in their most explosive moments. Meanwhile, Allegaeon’s genre-bending experiments feel creative but not overwrought. Most notably, “Dark Matter Dynamics” pulls a First Fragment stunt of seamlessly transitioning between jubilant strumming (courtesy of Adrian Bellue) and formidable death metal melodies. Indeed, The Ossuary Lens hits hardest when these forces unite. For instance, “Carried by Delusion” voyages from serene melodies to Revocation worship to blackened tremolos to upbeat bass and guitar solos to downcast crunchy riffs, eviscerating both my heartstrings and my neck. The Ossuary Lens’ moderation goes a long way. Rather than clobbering the listener with decades-long Spanish guitar jams, The Ossuary Lens presents its creative side through measured four-minute tracks. Tech, prog, melody, and home sweet death metal unite into a potent concoction.
While each piece of The Ossuary Lens is impressive in isolation, the album sometimes loses my interest. One reason is its lack of climactic moments. During tracks like “Scythe” and “Wake Circling Above,” I zoned out and had to abuse the rewind button, because there weren’t enough valleys, buildups, and peaks to keep me engaged. Another reason is sequencing; while the five middle tracks from “Driftwood” through “Dark Matter Dynamics” shine, the bookends fall short. The most predictable reason is production. Despite aiming for creativity and dynamism in their songwriting, Allegaeon continues to brickwall their albums into tepid gruel. As a result, The Ossuary Lens often loses my focus despite its seemingly manageable length. Conversely, the album’s highlights show how it’s done. Most strikingly, “Driftwood” has colonized my brain with a soulful mix of melodeath and metalcore that recalls Venom Prison. With highs this high, it’s a shame that The Ossuary Lens often slips into uniformity.
Allegaeon is a relatively new band, but they inspire nostalgia. I vividly recall pimply nights with the addictive Fragments of Form and Function. I still think that “Accelerated Evolution” and “Genocide for Praise” are two of the greatest album closers of this millennium. And the iconic 2014 music video for “1.618” sealed Allegaeon’s place in my heart forever. Measured against Allegaeon’s first three albums, The Ossuary Lens falls short, hampered by its dearth of standout moments. Still, it isn’t a stinker. It still bangs; it still shreds; it still progs. Warts and all, it earns its keep.

Allegaeon are something of a known quantity around here, having been nodded at by Steel, eviscerated by GardensTale, and patched up by Cherd. The Colorado crew helmed by guitarist Greg Burgess have amassed a legion of rabid followers (who are sure to raise a ruckus in the comment section) for their signature style of Gothenburg-meets-tech-death. I’ll admit to being a fan of 2016’s Proponent for Sentience, one of the first reviews I read on this site, but got lost amidst the dense material of Apoptosis and frankly didn’t even give Damnum a shot. Allegaeon’s latest LP, The Ossuary Lens, sees the return of original vocalist Ezra Haynes and a much-welcomed stripped-down runtime, two intriguing changes in my book. It’s been quite a while since I’ve been excited about an Allegaeon release, can The Ossuary Lens be the record to change that?
Allegaeon’s style of melo-tech-death needs little introduction here, but for those of you who haven’t been following the past decade’s worth of drama, I’ll provide the CliffsNotes. Sweeping, scalar guitar riffs courtesy of Burgess and Michael Stancel form the backbone of most tracks, and the dual guitars make for an indulgent offering of solos (“Driftwood,” “Wake Circling Above”). The drums here, while dripping with modern production sheen, are compelling and energetic without being overly technical, a sincere compliment for Jeff Saltzman. Allegaeon have never strayed from highlighting their bass players, and standout moments in “Chaos Theory” and “Carried by Delusion” show Brandon Michael has as much a command of melody as he does of relentless, galloping rhythms. Ezra Haynes, of Elements of the Infinite fame, comes roaring back to life on The Ossuary Lens, employing a gritty death roar alongside commendable clean vocals on “Driftwood” and “Wake Circling Above.” The performances on The Ossuary Lens are everything one would come to expect from a band nearly two decades into their career, and make for a wholly engaging listening experience.
Allegaeon albums tend to have similar issues holding them back, and the band have largely addressed them on The Ossuary Lens. First and foremost is the 45-minute runtime, a nearly 25% reduction in music from their last three records. The renewed focus on editing shines, with tracks that hit fast and get out of the way while still managing to be memorable (“The Swarm,” “Imperial”). This represents the first major improvement in The Ossuary Lens; Allegaeon have not only figured out that less is more, but they’ve also magnified the parts that work. Sing-along melodeath choruses lurk throughout the album (“Driftwood,” “Dies Irae”) but none so impactful as penultimate track “Wake Circling Above.” Clearly the best Insomnium track released this year, Allegaeon’s ode to all things Gothenburg is a monumental testament to what this band can do when they stop doing so much and let the music dictate the song’s course.
The hits don’t stop there. The Ossuary Lens takes a while to really get moving, with the first three tracks treading familiar territory. But then comes “Dies Irae,” a barnburner that incorporates the three-note musical motif for the Dies Irae text of the Requiem Mass, a nice music nerd Easter Egg that only enhances the ripping triplet-infused breakdown sitting in the song’s center. And Burgess’ requisite flamenco guitar, something sorely overused in Proponent for Sentience, is here condensed into the driving groove of “Dark Matter Dynamics,” a powerfully infectious rhythm ripped straight from a Rodrigo y Gabriela record, or the breath-before-the-plunge moments of the darkly harrowing “Carried by Delusion.” Whereas previous Allegaeon records were dense, academic affairs that required shoveling through noise and notes to discern, The Ossuary Lens presents a barebones masterclass on Allegaeon’s modus operandi.
This isn’t to say that The Ossuary Lens is infallible. Early tracks “Chaos Theory” and “Driftwood” are technically proficient, but fail to reach the emotional highs of the rest of their brethren. Final track “Scythe,” while holding some excellent verse grooves, feels underbaked after the astonishing “Wake Circling Above,” and its cropped ending leaves the album on more of a question mark than a statement. And there’s the lingering issue of the DR5 master and production, which, while not as obscene as earlier records, is still crushed and fatiguing. But overall, The Ossuary Lens represents a massively successful repositioning for the Coloradoans, making it one of my favorite spins of the year for its precision, refinement, and memorability. If Allegaeon continue on this trajectory, we may see their best work yet just over the horizon.

Animations – Definition Of Mad CD EP
Poland has long maintained an ironclad reputation as a fertile breeding ground for some of the most devastating, technically proficient heavy music on the planet. When you examine the output from this specific European region, you expect a certain level of instrumental precision and unyielding aggression. Hailing from Jaworzno, Animations perfectly embodies this regional pedigree while aggressively carving out their own unique sonic territory. This veteran unit has been grinding through the underground and refining its craft across five full-length albums. Their latest compact disc offering, the Definition Of Mad EP, represents a fascinating pivot in their creative trajectory. Following the expansive nature of their 2023 full-length Contemporary Guide to Modern Living, the band freely chose to compress their metallic fury into a concise, 25-minute onslaught. The resulting five-track release is a hyper-focused, lethal dose of metalcore, groove metal, and technical death metal that demands absolute attention from the listener. Thematic depth is a crucial component of any successful modern metal release, and Animations tackles incredibly heavy subject matter with profound respect and raw intensity. Definition Of Mad serves as a conceptual exploration of mental health and the grueling daily struggle to find balance within an increasingly chaotic, unbalanced modern world. The psychological weight of these themes is brilliantly visually represented by the EP’s cover art, crafted entirely by the band’s frontman, Frantz Wołoch. Having the lead vocalist handle the visual aesthetic ensures a perfectly unified artistic vision. The visual darkness immediately translates into the sonic artillery waiting on the disc. The band translates the crushing reality of anxiety, internal conflict, and societal pressure directly into their complex, aggressive musical arrangements.
Speaking of Frantz Wołoch, his vocal performance throughout this release is breathtaking. He acts as the primary emotional conduit, delivering enormously powerful vocals that run the entire gamut of extreme metal techniques. His aggressive delivery is packed with fierce shouts and marvelous screams that perfectly articulate the frustration and chaos of the human mind breaking down. Yet, he masterfully transitions into incredibly clean, melodic passages where the band shares highly sincere emotion. These melodic vocal sections act as crucial moments of vulnerability and clarity amid the instrumental storm. They provide the necessary breathing room, allowing the listener to fully absorb the lyrical weight regarding mental health struggles before the next wave of aggression hits. The foundational bedrock of Animations’ sound rests squarely upon the shoulders of the guitar department. The guitar work on this CD exemplifies extreme metal execution. The tone is obscenely heavy, utilizing extremely chuggy, downtuned configurations that make sure each riff arrives like a colossal, impenetrable wall of sound. Understanding the frequency distribution of these downtuned instruments highlights exactly why the riffs feel so physically imposing. The low-end resonance creates a percussive attack that hits the listener right in the chest. However, Animations refuses to rely solely on brute force. The guitar tracking is heavily layered and remarkably technically demanding. The progressive metal and technical death metal roots shine brightly through intricate fretboard acrobatics, complex time signatures, and rapid-fire picking sequences. Amidst this technical wizardry, the guitarists intelligently carve out specific spots to share subtle, beautifully constructed melodies and harmonies. These lead themes slice through the heavy rhythmic chugging, adding a sophisticated, atmospheric dimension to the brutal foundations.
To support such a massive guitar tone, a band requires a rhythm section possessing absolute precision and power. In modern metalcore and tech-death, the bass guitar frequently gets entirely buried in the mix, lost beneath the kick drums and distorted guitars. Animations vehemently rejects that mixing trope. The bass guitar on Definition Of Mad provides spectacular clarity and depth. You can distinctly hear the metallic clank of the bass strings locking into the groove. The bass acts as the ultimate structural adhesive, binding the erratic, technically demanding guitar sweeps with the thunderous percussive patterns. It adds a thick, warm undercurrent that makes the breakdowns and heavy grooves feel even more catastrophic. The drummer is tasked with keeping everything in line while simultaneously dictating the relentless groove and pace. In a genre-blending release like this, the percussionist must seamlessly transition between the bouncy, syncopated rhythms characteristic of groove metal and the complex endurance required for technical death metal. The drum tracking here is phenomenal. Every snare crack, double-kick barrage, and cymbal accentuation is placed with mathematical precision. The drumming creates a highly dynamic topography, knowing exactly when to push the tempo into the red zone and when to drop into a slow, neck-snapping groove. Definition Of Mad exemplifies how this band is entirely in control of their chaotic elements. Animations successfully distilled years of songwriting experience into a 25-minute masterpiece. They merged the technical proficiency of progressive metal with the sheer, undiluted hostility of metalcore and the rhythmic bounce of groove metal. By focusing their lyrical lens on the highly relatable, urgent topics of mental health and modern survival, they elevated the material from a simple collection of heavy riffs into a profound piece of art.
This CD is a mandatory acquisition for any true fan of metalcore, groove metal, or technical death metal. It provides all the intricate musicianship the elitists crave, alongside the massive, breakdown-inducing hooks that keep the mosh pits spinning. Animations took a bold step by shifting to this short, high-impact format, and the gamble paid off immensely. Grab a physical copy, examine the artwork, press play, and let the beautifully orchestrated madness wash over you.

I think people, when assessing the power of the Apple A18 Pro phone chip being used at the heart of the new MacBook Neo, should remember this graph from AnandTech, posted at the time of the Apple M1's debut.
Note the performance trajectory of Intel's top tier consumer CPUs vs. that of Apple's A-series phone chips. In 2020, the Apple A14 Bionic SoC in the iPhone 12 outperformed, in single-core performance, Intel's i9-10900K CPU. That's right. This performance trajectory of Apple's phone chips vs. Intel's mainline CPUs was a major factor in Apple deciding to start rolling their own M-series CPUs for the Mac. (And the M1 grew out of the same A14 SoC shown here.)
This puts into question just how apt a descriptor of performance the term "phone chip" really is, I think.

"In his essay “The West’s Last Chance” (January/February 2026), Alexander Stubb, the president of Finland, correctly divines the future trajectory of world order. “The global South,” he writes, “will decide whether geopolitics in the next era leans toward cooperation, fragmentation, or domination.” He’s also right in asserting that “this is the last chance for Western countries to convince the rest of the world that they are capable of dialogue rather than monologue.” Yet to have a dialogue, one must listen. The sad truth is that the West does not seem willing to listen to the global South.
The countries of the global South do not all share the dominant Western perspectives about world order. Stubb emphasizes the challenges posed by China and Russia. But many of the 3.3 billion Asians who are not Chinese, along with many of the approximately 1.5 billion people who live in Africa and the over 660 million who live in Latin America, view China and Russia differently. Western policymakers rarely try to understand why. China and Russia may loom menacingly in Western imaginations, but people in the global South do not think of them in that way—nor should they be expected to. Indeed, the rest of the world has had as much, perhaps more, to fear from the West in recent history as it has from the West’s autocratic competitors. To his credit, Stubb urges the governments of Western countries to take the demands and interests of the global South seriously. But engaging with the global South is not just an exercise in listening. It also requires Western governments to reassess their own positions and approaches to a world they have long taken for granted."

Diversion Channels vs. Climate Change: Will Five Cities’ Flood Protection Strategy Be Enough?
Many of those reading this post may recall scenes from the disastrous floods that took place along the Red River of the North in 1997, 2009, and 2011. Cities like Fargo and Grand Forks, North Dakota were severely impacted by floodwaters due to snowmelt and ice jams along that northward flowing river. Further north along the same river, in Manitoba, Winnipeg has dealt with significant flooding on multiple occasions.
Fargo flooding in 2011 – Source: wsj.comPart of the problem along this particular river valley is there is very little topographical change in this area, so when river levels run high, the floodwaters spread out far and wide across the northern prairie landscape. The limited grade change also tends to slow the speed of the river’s flow, which can add to the backup.
Tragic water and fire damage to downtown Grand Forks from 1997 flood – Source: grandforksherald.comTo address these costly and dangerous flooding problems along the Red River of the North, both Winnipeg and Grand Forks have developed enormous flood diversion channels around their urban area. Meanwhile, Fargo is close to completing its diversion channel. These three diversion systems are discussed below followed by other diversion channel programs established in Wichita, Kansas and Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Red River Floodway – Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada = 29 mile diversion channel
- Completed in 1968 for $63 million and enlargement completed in 2010 for $665 million
- Designated a National Historic Site in 2000
- Capacity of 140,000 cubic feet per second
- 2.7 billion cubic feet of Earth moved (more than the Suez Canal)
——-
English Coulee Diversion Channel – Grand Forks, ND, USA = 13 mile diversion channel for English Coulee and 8 miles of flood walls/levees along the Red River of the North
- The diversion channel for English Coulee bypassing Grand Forks was completed in 1990. Unfortunately, increasing the height of flood walls and levees was not completed until 2007.
- Total project cost was $409 million including the flood walls and levees on the Red River of the North.
- Flood protection was raised from 50 feet to 60 feet.
- Flood/stormwaters can be also pumped to the diversion channel from the city — up to 112,000 gallons per minute (= 250 cubic feet per second).
- Twenty miles of greenways trails
——-
Fargo-Moorhead Area Diversion Project – Fargo, ND/Moorhead, MN, USA = 30 mile diversion channel and 22 mile earthen embankment at the southern end of the complex
- To be completed in 2027 for $3.2 billion
- The Red River has reached flood stage in Fargo 60 times since 1902, including every single year between 1993 and 2011.
- Designed to withstand a 100-year flood and provide fightable protection against a 500-year flood.
- Capacity of 20,000 cubic feet per second.
- Other features will include levees, flood walls, stormwater lift stations, road improvements including raising grades, upstream mitigation, wetland mitigation, river restoration, a bike/walking trail, and related flood control projects in outer communities and in nearby Minnesota.
——-
Further to the south, Wichita, Kansas has faced similar issues with flooding from the Arkansas and Little Arkansas Rivers. To limit future damage to life and property in the city, an enormous flood diversion project was completed here in 1959. This diversion channel is very visible to drivers along Interstate 235 around the west side of the city.
Wichita-Valley Center Floodway – Wichita, KS, USA = 18 mile diversion channel
- Completed in 1959 for $20 million
- Includes 50 miles of connecting channels, 100 miles of levees, and 150 control structures.
- The diversion channel has a flood carrying capacity twice that of the Arkansas River itself, while the Little Arkansas River portion around the town of Valley Center has a capacity of 55,000 cubic feet per second.
——–
In an altogether different context, Albuquerque, New Mexico can also face quick and devastating floods, but not from a flat terrain. Instead, the threat here is threefold – rapid snowmelt from the abutting Sandia Mountains flowing down into the city and the valley combined with urban stormwater runoff and heavy summer monsoon-season rains (yes, we have a monsoon season here) overwhelming the natural arroyos and dry stream beds. In Albuquerque, a network of diversion channels has been developed, with two primary ones (the North and South Diversion Channels) being the largest collectors and distributors of stormwater and floodwaters from natural arroyos and human made/enhanced channels.
Monsoon season storm over Albuquerque – Source: flickr.comNorth Diversion Channel – Albuquerque, NM, USA = 8.7 miles
- Completed in 1969 at a cost of $20.3 million
- Capacity of 44,000 cubic feet per second ~ equivalent to a 500-year flood event
- Collects flood/storm waters from 50 square miles and discharges it into the Rio Grande
- A bicycle/pedestrian trail runs along the top of the channel for its entire length.
- Passes through the heart of the city instead of around it.
South Diversion Channel – Albuquerque, NM, USA ~ 5.5 miles
- Completed in 1972 at a cost of $8.3 million and discharges into the Rio Grande
- A bicycle/pedestrian trail runs along the top of the channel for much of its length.
——-
As these five examples show, there are viable options for protecting life, limb, and property from devastating floods in urban areas. That being said, as the Earth’s climate continues to become warmer, bringing with it heavier rainfalls and stronger storms, even these diversion channels and their associated infrastructure may become overwhelmed by future weather events.
Source: climateactiontracker.orgTherefore, addressing only the after-the-fact results of storms will not protect our communities as long as climate change is allowed to continue on its current trajectory. Humankind must also address the root causes of climate change, including the impacts we create by our individual and collective actions and activities. This includes making hard choices…frankly choices that highly-developed First World countries like the United States too often avoid making.
Furthermore, when nations ignore climate reality, these five cities, let alone many others across the planet, will need to upgrade their flood defenses over and over again. In this era of climate change, such efforts will not and cannot solve the problem alone. Humanity must find the “sustainable willpower” to effectively address climate change for the long term. In the end, future generations will be grateful that we did.
Peace!

How do we stop the world’s ecosystems from going into a death spiral? A #SteadyState Economy
Steady State Economics:
An Interview with Martin Tye
Australasian Regional Representative, Centre for Advancement of Steady State Economics (CASSE)
What is a Steady State Economy?
A Steady State Economy is a mildly fluctuating economy that does not exceed ecological and planetary limits.
A Steady State Economy is not an alternative economic ideology that is centred on endless GDP growth. It is neither capitalism nor communism.
Economic growth, with all of its downsides, is clearly unsustainable in the 21st century. Long-term recession is no panacea either. A steady state economy is the sustainable alternative to perpetual economic growth.
Economic growth was never a magic bullet; it is simply an increase in the production and consumption of goods and services–it can’t possibly lead to a sustainable outcome. In contrast, the steady state economy provides the means for present and future generations to achieve a high quality of life.
In this interview, Palm Oil Detectives speaks with Martin Tye, a representative of the Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy (CASSE) in Regional Australia. Martin studies ecological economics and history and passionate about improving the quality of life for current and future generations and restoring wildlife.
The Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy (CASSE) was formed in 2003 by conservation biologist, author, speaker and media commentator Brian Czech.

“Somehow, we have come to think the whole purpose of the economy is to grow, yet growth is not a goal or purpose. The pursuit of endless growth is suicidal.”
David Suzuki
The goal of Steady State Economics is to substitute the model of endless GDP growth with a stable and mildly fluctuating economy
The term often refers to a national economy, but ‘Steady State’ economics also be applied to a local, regional, or global economy.
An economy can reach a steady state after a period of growth or after a period of downsizing or degrowth.
#SteadyState Economics calls for everyone to demand a shift from a model of endless GDP growth towards a mildly fluctuating economy that exists in harmony with animals and ecosystems @steadystateecon @martinrev21 #Boycott4Wildlife

A steady state economy may not exceed ecological limits

A steady state economy entails a population growth and per capita consumption that is stabilised and balanced.
GDP is a solid indicator of economic activity and environmental impact – not well-being. All else equal, the steady state economy is indicated by stabilised, or mildly fluctuating GDP.
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is not a good indicator of well-being
Economic growth, otherwise known as GDP growth, encourages wasteful overconsumption
In a steady state economy, people consume enough to meet their needs and lead meaningful, joyful lives without undermining the life-support systems of the planet
With a Steady State economy, conspicuous consumption becomes a thing of the past
People choose to consume energy and materials responsibly, conserving, economising, and recycling where appropriate.
Citizens (yes citizens, not consumers) recognise that the culture of materialism as a bankrupt ideology and a poor path to happiness.
People forget about trying to accumulate evermore stuff, instead focusing on more worthwhile pursuits.
Personal and societal decisions about how much to consume take into account sustainability principles and the needs of future generations.
If the world continues on its current trajectory, in 20 years what will happen doesn’t bear thinking about. Things will get very ugly!
Industrial scale food agriculture is a necessary support to growing economies- all part and parcel of the package, in particular their demand for growing populations (consumers- who need to be fed, so they can buy).
A growing economy consumes natural resources and produces wastes. This results in biodiversity loss, air and water pollution, climate destabilisation, and other major environmental threats.
GDP growth metrics fails to consider the ecological impacts of production, or recognise ecological limits to growth. So ecological pressures continue unabated.

What would steady state global agriculture look like?
Just as a growth economy tends to impart industrial characteristics to its agricultural systems, a steady state economy tends to impart sustainable characteristics to its agricultural systems.
A fixed quantity of food
Such an economy requires a fixed quantity of food. There is no need for constantly increasing the amount of food produced, and there is a calming effect on the landscape – not as much land needs to be in crop-production mode.
Low throughput of energy and materials
In addition to stable population and consumption, a steady state economy features stable and relatively low throughput of energy and materials, a characteristic that applies to the agricultural sector.
Decentralised and local
The best way to achieve sustainable throughput in agricultural systems is to decentralize. Inputs, especially fossil fuel inputs, can be reduced by shifting to local systems of production, distribution and consumption. Agriculture in a Steady State Economy
If the world adopts Steady State model now, in 20 years significant improvements will be visible in the world
Guided by a dashboard of ecological, social and economic progress indicators (GPI’s) we will have begun to re-shape the world.
Ecosystems would have started their recovery, economies would be progressing towards a restructured smaller local and sustainable scale.
As resource pressures ease, so too will international and regional tensions
People will see improved life satisfaction as “well-being” replaces “growth” as a goal.
In this version of the future, the world would be a much happier and positive place than it is today. In this state, human achievement and potential will be maximised.
The Steady State economics model offers goals like sustainability and fairness with the least amount of impingement on individual freedoms.
Cargill – Animal Utopia by Hartmut Kiewurt https://hartmutkiewert.de/werk/animal-utopia/A steady state economy has four basic principles:
1. Maintain the health of ecosystems and the life-support services they provide.
2. Extract renewable resources like fish and timber at a rate no faster than they can be regenerated.
3. Consume non-renewable resources like fossil fuels and minerals at a rate no faster than they can be replaced by the discovery of renewable substitutes.
4. Deposit wastes in the environment at a rate no faster than they can be safely assimilated.
The Steady Stater Podcast

A steady state: The only kind of economy that’s sustainable in the long term
It is an economy that meets people’s needs without undermining the life-support services of the planet.
This will paint a more realistic picture of the state of things, better inform policy and guide the changes they need to make.
The strongest move policy-makers can make is to adopt new performance indicators to replace GDP
People need to understand that “economic growth” is propping up short sighted economic parasites
Cop26 deforestationWe see resistance to change in the fossil fuel lobby, the palm oil lobby, meat agriculture, property developers, retail chains etc. Before universally smoking was frowned upon, we saw resistance from the tobacco industry. Before this, slave holders also resisted change.

People power is needed to change the system. The steady state economic model provides the only real solution
Research: Boycotts Are Worthwhile and Effective
Despite sustained and vigorous attempts by corporates and industry certification schemes like RSPO, MSC and FSC to downplay the impact and effectiveness of consumer boycotts, it turns out that boycotts are impactful and drive social change. They force profit-first and greedy corporations to change their ways and do better. They also create a tangible sense…
by Palm Oil DetectivesSeptember 11, 2021November 5, 2024Simplicity and non-violence are obviously closely related
As physical resources are limited, people satisfying their needs by means of a modest use of resources are obviously less likely to be at each other’s throats than people depending upon a high rate of use. Equally, people who live in highly self-sufficient local communities are less likely to get involved in large-scale violence than people whose existence depends on world-wide systems of trade. ~ Buddhist Economics By E. F. Schumacher
Activists can take individual action and collective action to effect change
A good example of a collective of researchers, economists, conservationists and activists pushing for change is CASSE: The Centre for Advancement of Steady State Economics.
Good examples of grass-roots, bottom-up collectives include: the #Boycott4Wildlife, Extinction Rebellion, Fridays for Future and the Vegan Land Movement.

Stop destabilizing the Earth system! (Pt. 2)
Halting and reversing biodiversity loss toward restoring Earth system stability
... "Our findings emphasize that preventing the loss of intact biomes, ecosystems, and species assemblages is the most critical strategy while acknowledging the urgency of extinction prevention and the need for restoration. Additionally, we highlight the importance of incorporating Indigenous and local knowledge systems alongside scientific methods to achieve effective and equitable conservation outcomes. Finally, we discuss the need for economic transformation and the private sector’s role in fostering an NP future."
"Incorporating Indigenous or traditional knowledge and practices, which are rooted in responsibility to the living world and inherently include awareness of biotic and abiotic processes, is essential to achieving the NP goal."
"The NP shift requires transforming our economic system to work within the Earth system and equitably support human development.
Human exploitation of nature driven by prevailing economic systems of production and consumption is causing a rapid and catastrophic decline in biodiversity (1) while simultaneously disrupting the climate system (2). These actions are actively destabilizing the Earth system upon which human health and development depend (3), and the trajectory of environmental degradation is accelerating, placing life as we know it at grave risk" >>Locke, H., Hauer, R., et al. Daniella Gabor on the Wallstreet Consensus (starts out in French but interview is in English)
i don't expect there to be too many takers but this is about the historical trajectories bw keysianism –> neoliberalism (washington consensus) –> a post neoliberal order that is still emerging. broadly distinguished from keyne's proposition that any social transformation we want we can pay for (the state can finance) to today where it might be characterised as any transformation we want private finance can pay for (which is of course contingent on transformation being agreeable to capital broadly)
for anyone unfamiliar daniella gabor is a phd in banking and finance and is an enormously knowledgable, insightful and charismatic speaker

Vanilla BA.2.86 is starting to drop off the chart, but its grandchild JN.1 has increased quite a lot this week. No BA.2.86 descendents are above the Tableau graph "fold" yet, though.: https://ibb.co/WDGqQ0C
In PA, FL.1.5.1 weirdly more successful here than HV.1, but not by a whole lot. JD.1.1 is another variant that is not good to see here and is specifically being watched for fast progress.
In NY/NJ, HV.1 and FL.1.5.1 at the top, similar to national testing, but I REALLY want to call your attention to JN.1 which has made it above the fold at .37% already. 👀: https://ibb.co/QJrmZt4

"The accumulation of free oxygen in the atmosphere ≈2.45 billion years ago was one of the most transformative events in Earth’s past. Since its identification, this interval termed the ‘Great Oxidation Event’ (GOE), has garnered a large amount of attention from a wide array of perspectives, with some suggesting it should define its own geologic era or period. Despite many new tools to interrogate the GOE, today the defendable range of possible atmospheric O2 levels span orders of magnitude, begging the question, how great was Earth’s Great Oxidation? The consequences of such disparate views on oxygenation levels are uncertainties regarding biospheric evolution, interpretations of the sedimentary record, and a limited ability to translate Earth’s atmospheric history into insights for exoplanet research. In this review, we revisit the conditions immediately before, during, and after Earth’s GOE to explore the key assumptions that underlie differing views on this critical interval of time. We then highlight new discoveries and outline extremely divergent but defendable interpretations of atmospheric oxygen trajectories across the GOE. Reducing such divergent scenarios should be a major target of research progress in the coming years."

CW: (over) 5 years of GRASP
My first attempt at what would become #GRASP was in September 2016, when I was working on a structure editor running in the SLAYER framework that I was developing at the time. It wasn't called GRASP yet, though - I called it "Butterfly", because of the XKCD strip about "real programmers", but I didn't get very far.
SLAYER was based on Guile, and I ended up implementing something akin to Racket's Big Bang (which I didn't know about at that time), and I have spent considerable effort to find a way to represent stuff in Scheme in a nice way (I developed a library for working with lists of interspersed keywords and values, but I was never happy about that).
I think I may have been on a trajectory to build something similar to @disconcision 's Fructure, but I broke my laptop, and it took me a while to recover the latest changes from the disk (which I think eventually happened in 2018; until then, I was working on a small Intel Atom-based netbook that I borrowed from a friend, and on which I wrote "A Pamphlet Against R").
Then I started to look for a nice way of putting rectangles into other rectangles, which took the form of "The Draggable Rectangle Challenge" that I published on Quora (I was a Quora addict at that time)
https://eidolon-language.quora.com/Draggable-rectangle-challenge-part-I-the-introduction
I wrote a highly idiosyncratic solution in Racket, which nevertheless had its charm, but it ran terribly slowly on my friend's Raspberry Pi, and I haven't figured out any way to run it on Android.
The editor window title was "GRASP LIMB", where "GRASP" stands - of course - for GRAphical Scheme Programming, and "LIMB" is meant to be a pun on LISP's backronym "Lots of Irritating Superfluous Parentheses"; "LIMB" was meant to stand for "Lots of Intriguing Movable Boxes".
I started figuring out a way to build Android applications - I had to buy additional 2GB of RAM to my laptop to make Android Studio to run, and when (after breaking another laptop) I finally found a way to build Android apps in Termux, without Android Studio, it turned out to be a huge productivity booster to me - I could finally do programming in places where I wouldn't be able to use the laptop, and this setup prompted some of the design of GRASP.
I made the first version on/for the phone in the spring of 2020, mainly on the toilet (and it shows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmZ39IfElzg), and in 2021 I wrote what I thought would be the "final version" - but in both cases, the development eventually stalled.
