  1. A very enjoyable Bosch motor debut from Tenways. One of those bikes that was very easy to reach for and replace car trips. Mark was a big fan of the elegant frame design flowing into the pannier rack too.

A great further step into the mid-tier e-bike world for the Dutch brand with a bike that retails for £2,999, but is currently available for £2,799.

  2. So, yesterday I had the pleasure (?) of using the Southern Rail service on the Three Bridges to London Victoria line. I had my full sized bike with me. On previous occasions, the bike carriage was indicated by a bicycle logo near the door, next to a wheelchair logo. On yesterday's train, the bicycle logo had been removed.

Anyway, I got on the train and went to tie up my bike only to find that there were no straps. Everything else was the same as it used to be. So I had to stand next to my bike so it wouldn't get flung around on some of the curves (or track changes).

I asked the conductor and was told that they removed the straps due to a "government directive". He didn't look like he was in the mood to be questioned by me, just a passenger (oops, sorry: a customer) so I didn't probe further. If anybody knows what government directive this might be, please let me know (before I write to my MP).

I am concerned that this is the first step towards not allowing full sized bikes at all on their services.

PS - Thameslink, on the other hand, provide an excellent service including carrying bikes and, luckily, this is the service I use more often.

  3. Anybody here have any experience on taking a bicycle (full size) on the Guildford-Gatwick route (via Redhill) with Great Western Railway?

  4. A nice, if very windy, ride at lunchtime today - one of those rare rides where everyone was patient and behaved themselves, coupled with a delightful spring day. That should've made it entirely stress free - but my goodness those potholes are getting extremely tiresome. #UKCycling #Cycling

  5. Cycled the Downs Link from Christ's Hospital to Brighton via Shoreham-by-sea. A large segment of the route goes alongside the River Adur. We were lucky with the weather for once! Lovely day and a great ride.

  6. Yesterday was not quite as nice a day as the day before but I wanted to take on a longer cycle ride than usual. Headed out to Christ's Hospital by train to then start cycling down the Downs Link to Shoreham by Sea and then along the coast to Brighton, where I got the train back.

Spitting with rain the whole time with some pretty bad headwinds but a lovey ride nonetheless. The scenery along the Downs Link is beautiful. Highly recommended.

  7. I am so confused by this sign.

Photograph taken on the Worth Way (NCN 21), east of Crawley near Rowfant, this morning before it started raining (again).

  8. I encountered the Schrödinger driver today: in so much of a rush that they couldn't give way to the cyclist (me) even though I had priority but also had so much time on their hand that they could try to chase me down to do something to me. 😡

I was cut up by a driver coming in from a side street, a driver that should have yielded to me. I yelled (without any profanity) that they could have waited a second. I continued on my way only to hear some honking of horns. I looked back and saw the car stopped in the road. I ignored it and kept going on my way. A minute later as I was entering a cul-de-sac, I heard a horn again, very loud, and looked back to see the driver chasing me in their car. They had to have done a 3-point turn to change direction to chase me.

The cul-de-sac has an exit for cyclists and pedestrians, which is where I was heading anyway, so simply kept going and ignored the driver.

    Hey hum.

Luckily, the rest of my 20 km ride was uneventful and the sun was out (for once).

  10. Today's weather forecast: "Light rain" followed by "Heavy drizzle" and then "Overcast", "Light rain", "Light rain showers". I love weather forecast terms. How does "Heavy drizzle" differ from "Light rain"?

Anyway, after yesterday's disappointment at not going out on my bike, I jumped at the chance of cycling during the "Overcast" period. Success: 20km without getting (too) wet! Mind you, I would have labelled that period as "Spitting". 😉

  11. Unhappy with myself: didn't go out for a ride this morning. The weather is simply miserable. I hate January. ☹️

  12. First ride of the year (not counting cycling on a fixed bike indoors). Cold and damp but no actual precipitation. Feel good and I'm glad I vanquished the inertia that was tempting me to stay in.

I'll hopefully get out most days this week, weather permitting.

  13. Cycled along part of the Downs Link today. It was a grey day but not raining and relatively warm (12 or so degrees C). Mind you, it was quite windy (and it was a head wind, of course) along the coast.

I took the train to Brighton. From the rail station, I went down to the coast through the centre of town and then along the National Cycle Network route 2 through Hove and Portslade by Sea to Shoreham-by-Sea. There, I headed inland on NCN route 223, the **Downs Link**, to Christ's Hospital just outside Horsham where I took the train back home.

The Downs Link follows the river Adur for quite some while. The river is very wide at Shoreham-by-Sea as you can see in one of the photos attached. The whole route is quite lovely, with great views of the South Downs for the first part. It is almost entirely off-road and mostly suitable for gravel bikes (caveat: I was on a mountain bike) but probably not road bikes. Given the amount of rain we've had recently, it was unsurprisingly wet with lots of puddles but, luckily, very little actual muddy slippery bits.

The ride was 42 km. I took just over 3 hours with lots of stops for photos, charging phone which died halfway, talking to people (and their dogs), etc. Total time actually cycling was 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Highly recommended if you're in the area!

  14. Anybody here know what the bicycle parking is like at Imperial College London, South Kensington campus? I have to attend a meeting afternoon through to late evening and wanted to take my full size bike in lieu of my Brompton (for reasons).

    Boosts welcome. Thank you.

  15. I went out and got myself two pairs of thick, part Merino wool, socks.

    Winter, bring it on!

  16. -3 °C but lovely and sunny this morning. Practically lost feeling in toes and finger tips so I think I may need thicker socks and better gloves! Body warmed up quickly however. Great ride overall.

  17. Snowing in Crawley in mid-November! Maybe a good thing that I chickened out of going out for a bike ride today.

  18. # Preparing for winter

My goto bike for going to the shops etc., where I need to lock the bike up while I'm elsewhere, is this single speed bike. I bought it from a charity shop. It's hopefully not very attractive to would-be thieves but, even if stolen, I won't have lost too much money.

I'm preparing for winter by adding mud guards and lights.

  19. My single speed bike and I heading into central London for a meeting. I'm taking this bike because I cannot take a bike inside the building where the meeting is taking place. I'm hoping this bike is less attractive than any of my other bikes to would be thieves...

Edit: fixed typographical error. There's always at least one. 😄
