Random Thoughts
A few random thoughts on this random Wednesday evening.
I believe there are 38 days left until my wife and I see Rush again. Cleveland. The first US city that broke Rush. The city whose response lead to them signing their first real record deal. 38 days to go.
I learned something about life on the third day post-double tooth extractions. Singing hurts. I didn’t have any pain on the day of the procedure. I didn’t have any pain on the day after. I felt a little confident on the third day and tried to record some vocal tracks for the 50 songs in 90 days challenge. Ouch, bro. Ouch. Having said that, they did tell me to expect day four to be the peak of pain and discomfort so maybe I’m just following the plan.
I’m not doing a liquid diet but I am doing a mostly liquid diet. I’m just playing it safe. I bought a chocolate protein shake mix. The label says to mix it with cold water. Its okay with water, but it is 100 times better when mixed with skim milk. Unfortunately, the mix doesn’t really… mix… with milk. Probably 3/4 of it mixes okay but the rest… lets just say that the protein shake is a smidge on the chunky side.
Did I like the third season of House of the Dragon? I was fully on team Black after season two, but in season three the Blacks were kinda dicks and now I don’t know who I’m rooting for. Weird. At least I’ll have time to figure it out before season four comes out… two freakin’ years from now.
We are three episodes in to the new season of Star Trek Strange New Worlds and I am loving it. The first episode was a great time travel story. The second was a great full blown haunted house horror story that was creepy as fuck. The third episode was basically The hangover and featured David Foley from The Kids in the Hall, confirming that Kids and Star Trek are in the same universe… as if there was ever any doubt. Episode four comes out tomorrow and I can’t wait to see what they do next.
Okay… that’s the state of Robert’s world tonight. It’s 8:36pm and this old fart is ready for bed. G’night, all!

I wonder if RUSH fans realize that “Vital Signs” can be seen as one of the most significant tributes to Neil Peart. The band members know this; they feel it. You just have to look at their reverent final pose, it gives you goosebumps!
When the song came out in 1981, I was blown away – the nod to The Police, Neil’s clever lyrics, his rebellious drum arrangement, and the anthemic finale.

@reinderdijkhuis gefiliciteerd!
There are at least 4 different setlists for this tour, & one could (very roughly) divide their huge catalog of music by decade to get a better understanding of the band.
I'd say the landmark albums that define major style changes of an era are:
Permanent Waves
Roll the Bones
Vapor Trails
& The albums following each of those solidify the feeling of the era:
Moving Pictures
Counterparts
Snakes & Arrows#2112 & Hemispheres are probably the best references for early Rush, & Grace Under Pressure is perhaps their darkest album (it certainly holds special significance for me in many ways) & maybe the most popular of the "keyboard era".
In addition to the music, I'd suggest having a good look over the album art & tourbooks, which will help you get a better understanding of the extensive visuals in the show (& the gags...)

#GeddyLee (73): "Life on the road at our age is very, very difficult. We’re thrilled with how well the show is going, but when we’re walking back after a three-hour show, we’re walking very slowly. I have an hour and a half of bliss after each show before the pains start to creep in. Every show is a 48-hour cycle of preparation. It’s an endurance test and we’ll see if we survive it."

From last night in Toronto: “Caravan” is one of the newer RUSH songs where I find the first half boring. But the instrumental part is interesting and energetic, as always. If they write new material (which they surely will), I hope they work with better producers again.

RUSH in Toronto, show 2 of 4. It’s funny how people filming with their cell phones think it’s essential to capture the entire screen. But what I find interesting here is that the projection is perfectly in sync. That’s great for the concert film, but how is that even possible? Are they now using excellent wireless connections instead of kilometers of cables? BTW, the ending is cute :)
