Listening to an old single by German industrial band Einstürzende Neubauten: Kalte Sterne.
Actually, I am surprised how much "pop" they sounded sometimes.
This song has pop structure: Intro, Verse, Refrain, Bridge and so on.
And our listening customs have changed a lot since that time. What once sounded outrageous has just turned normal.

More Adventures in Record Collecting
I bought this Naked Raygun album I don't even remember when. Not back in the day but probably not in the last 10 years either. And I know I've listened to it. But apparently I've never followed along with the lyric sheet. So I was listening to it last week and I was comparing the song titles on the back of the jacket with the lyrics on the inner sleeve and they did not line up at all. Turns out, the disc and inner sleeve were from an earlier release, Jettison.
So I went on Discogs and went to put it on my Wantlist. The idea is to find a copy with a cover in bad shape or missing but the vinyl good. It's a crapshoot to be sure. To my surprise there it was. Vinyl VG+; cover G+. Someone drew on it. Some sticker & tape damage. So score! (Plus the seller had Make an Offer enabled and accepted my bid.)
So I just need to find a copy of Jettison that has trashed vinyl.

This is an interesting one. It is in some way related to my Boston rock post (https://digitallofi.com/blog/2024/11-november/notes-on-my-boston-rock-scene): a Boston-based band playing combination of post-punk, art rock, industrial. But this was released in 1992 long after I was paying particular attention to the bands out of Boston. (What was I listening to in the early 90s? Other than the usual alternative hit records of the day, a lot of Giant Sand I think.) The sound of this record really recalls mid-to-late 80s era college rock. So it would have been a good footnote for that discussion of 80s underground rock.
Alas this record I got many years ago from Analog Underground (Providence, RI) in their 5 dollar bin (4 for $15!) and if I listened to it before today I have no memory of it. I'm trying to clear the decks of the stack of records I have that fall into that I-need-to-listen-and-evaluate-if-I'm-going-to-ever-spin-it-again. I'll keep this. Not going to be my favorite undiscovered/lost gem rediscoveries but it indirectly tickles that nostalgia bone.

This one has been a grail (as they say on r/vinyl) since I learned it was pressed to vinyl. The story, according to the comments on the Discogs page, is there were only 500 manufacturerd, 300 of which were destroyed in a flood at the label that repressed this.
Normally I try not to get too invested in owning certain records but I really, really dig this record. It came up from a seller who I follow on YouTube so I knew he was reputable and I sucked it up.
One of the best of the also-ran 90s indie-rock-to-major-label bands. I first heard them on @WFMU, a song--"Tonight Was Fun"--from their first single, Vs. The Dead C, and it instantly resonated with me. (I tracked that down and still own it; one of the few 7" records I own.) Their debut album was on The Dust Brothers' Nickelbag Records; then this was released on Dreamworks. It didn't crack the mainstream and the people who liked them from their indie releases thought this was a sellout. And, sure, I guess I get that; it's a BIG sounding record. You can really hear that major label money. But it has always been one of my favorite albums from the 90s. (Along with the accompanying EP, which was repressed by the same label that did this edition but presumably didn't get mostly lost in a flood.) (One my favorite songs—“The Fountain”— was a b-side to the "hit" from the Nickelbag album, "Wonderful Love" and was released as a 12".)

This is the other record that J bequeathed to me because when he posted the cover as he was playing it I was like, oh shit, funk record, I want. And J was determined that people know Hot Chocolate was so much more than just a dance band. Those first 3 records have so many touch points. I don't remember which one was the record that he had on the turntable--I want to say the self-titled debut.
I've since acquired all of the first 3 records. And they're great. But still play this on the reg.

This is the first of two records that he passed along as a direct result of a conversation we'd had. This one must've sprung from him posting a Sparks' record during his daily at-work listening posts. I mentioned I'd seen the doc and wanted to explore their discography but it was intimidating, and he whipped up a list of Sparks records that were a good starting place for a novice.
Alas, that list is lost in the digital dust of esoteric.party. But he included this record in that batch.
I've since found two other Sparks records in the wild.
But what a good testament to how big that dude's heart was. Not a trace of too-cool-for-school or music snob. He was always excited to turn people on to music no matter how big or obscure that band was.
