@siracusa What do you think Photos for macOS is doing when it's "Preparing for cleanup..." when you want to do photo cleanup? Every time.
Initially it quite surprisingly had to download some component the first time cleanup was used, now it just "prepares" for about 10 seconds - and this is on a Mac Studio M1 Max with 32GB RAM.

I think people, when assessing the power of the Apple A18 Pro phone chip being used at the heart of the new MacBook Neo, should remember this graph from AnandTech, posted at the time of the Apple M1's debut.
Note the performance trajectory of Intel's top tier consumer CPUs vs. that of Apple's A-series phone chips. In 2020, the Apple A14 Bionic SoC in the iPhone 12 outperformed, in single-core performance, Intel's i9-10900K CPU. That's right. This performance trajectory of Apple's phone chips vs. Intel's mainline CPUs was a major factor in Apple deciding to start rolling their own M-series CPUs for the Mac. (And the M1 grew out of the same A14 SoC shown here.)
This puts into question just how apt a descriptor of performance the term "phone chip" really is, I think.

Could this be the new slider control coming in Liquid Glass in macOS 26.2?? Only time will tell...

After listening to a summer of reporting on the progressive betas of Apple's 2025 operating systems ( thanks #ATPpodcast ), I delayed installing macOS 26 Tahoe to give it some time for a few post-launch tweaks.
Last night I finally installed it on my Mac Studio, and I must say that so much of the interface changes feel like an awkward and ill-conceived jump back to the early days of the Aqua aesthetic of the early 2000s. Well, let me rephrase that -- it feels like looking back at the early days of Aqua from the perspective of today, where the dramatic aspects of it seem rather gaudy or garish in retrospect.
The amount of workspace lost to the enormous rounding radius of so many of the interface rectangles and to the compounding margins and padding (to use web terms) on these floating islands of controls -- that need not be floating islands at all -- is jarring to me still, after hours of use, here.
And, in grabbing a screenshot for the Aqua example ( thanks @512pixels ), I was treated to a Safari window that I assumed had glitched / broken, but -- and I'm not positive -- I don't ..think.. it's a glitch, but the intended behavior of the interface. (Shot attached, there are three tabs in that window, apparently.)
From a UX/UI perspective, macOS seems basically wrecked. Updates from @siracusa tell me that the interface was worse in early betas, and so I have hope that things will continue to evolve back out from the bizarre.
I have scarcely seen a better example of form over function -- but to what victory? macOS Tahoe's form looks very wrong to my eyes.
( As it happens, I have installed iPadOS 26 on my iPad Pro and don't find its interface as jarring and it feels less "broken." I still hold off installing it on my iPhone, though I do get a text every few days from my daughter in college who has installed it on her phone and writes to express her confusion and frustration with it. )

@siracusa My daughter just texted me from her dorm room:
"This new iPhone update is .. weird -- it's all messed up.
Why is it like this?"

@caseyliss The iPod nano was an amazing device, indeed. I pulled mine out and listened to it (and photographed it with some of its siblings) not too long ago.
Strap and everything, just like the iPhone Air!

I'm going to wait a bit on macOS Tahoe for my Mac Studio and MacBook Air. All indications I've heard are that you should seriously consider doing the same.
Let a few bug fix patches land first.

They didn't roll an enormous, orange TechWoven rendering of trump's ass out on stage ahead of Tim Cook so that he could give it a few lingering kisses before kicking off the Apple Event.

@siracusa I know _exactly_ what you were picturing in your head when describing the "slimming" effect of the color fade as the glass back of the iPhone 16 rises to the camera mesa --- like a make-up technique...

On the latest #ATPpodcast I heard @siracusa pronounce the HEIC image format as a word - "heek" [hiːk]. He is the first human I have heard pronounce it as a word. I feel like, for me, it will always be "H E I C".
There are several acronyms I treat this way, that I've heard others say as words, thinking about it.
PNG, SVG, BMP, IFF, SQL, URL, LED, GUI, PDF, PCMCIA (well...), etc.
I am old and set in my ways.
By the way, GIF is not on that list because I pronounce it as a word starting with a soft G, because that is how that is pronounced.

@marcoarment Another recycled name from Apple's distant past: QuickTake
-
@siracusa It's funny to think about -- regarding the possible inclusion of an A19 Pro in the next generation Studio Display and it potentially being more powerful than the rumored A18-based laptop that might use it as a display, it's something we in the retro computing community see so often.
For example, the most popular floppy/HD emulator device for the Apple II series, the Floppy Emu by BMOW, runs a microcontroller that (while quite modest) is 40-80x faster in real code than the 1.02MHz 6502 in the Apple II it is servicing.
It also brings to mind the original LaserWriter from 1985, which had a 12MHz MC68000 -- over 50% faster than the CPU in the Macs it attached to.
-
@siracusa I will die one the "whence" hill. Don't show me a "from" - it's built in.
-
@kkolakowski @siracusa I have been assuming part of the point, here, for Apple is to use what is in-production, not expending any extra effort where unnecessary.
But, yea, the RAM sits alongside the SoC die, so it would be quite possible, if they choose to go that route.
I have an M1 Max Studio and that A18 is 43% or whatever was said on the show faster per core than this desktop. Not bad for a cheap laptop, even if RAM is low. (But, yes, 16GB -should- be the baseline - period.)
-
@santiago There won't be an M4 Ultra - the Max is too big. They can't fit two on one die.
I heard it explained a few months ago on #ATPpodcast

@caseyliss In the 42 years I've been a computer geek, of the hundreds of displays I've owned, the LG DualUp is by far the one I have most enjoyed. I use it rotated for an 18:16 ( = 4.5:4 ) aspect ratio that feels perfectly (gloriously) square. It's the main display on my Mac Studio and makes _so_ much more sense to me than widescreen for web development and general use.
And #macOS HiDPI scaling on modern hardware it _not_ an issue, here. https://bytecellar.com/2022/11/08/4k-scaling-is-not-a-problem-on-modern-macs/

@marcoarment I heard you guys talking about your newly reacquired Palm IIIx and Vx. I started with a "PalmPilot Personal" in 1997.
I always found it interesting (and very much a case of "done the right way") that the 16MHz DragonBall microcontroller (containing basically an MC68000) uses system RAM as data storage (battery backed) and executes program code _in-place_ in that RAM, using 4K of SRAM (in typical configuration) as a stack and for data storage during execution. Programs are not loaded from storage one place and into RAM in another place.
The Newton, which preceded Palm, also executes programs from its "Soup" in-place, etc.
The original Palm V was the device from the family that I was most fond of.
