  6. Downtown #Schenectady NY, probably autumn 1977. A dreary day in what was then a dreary place, even though I loved it. The Proctor's Theatre on the left has survived and expanded, the old local department store hung on into the early '90s, everything else has changed. The buildings are mostly still there, and renovated. Looking at this I mostly remember how bad the air quality was.

  7. My latest #LocalHistory post has more than a tiny element of #PersonalHistory, as it's about my elementary #school (and its predecessor of the same name). I was lucky enough to find some great #ClassPhotos and shots of the #playground, where I spent thousands of hours of my youth.

  9. Going back a month to our #Adirondacks vacation – one of the best-built trails I've ever seen, the Powerhouse Trail for historic Camp Sagamore in the vicinity of Raquette Lake #trail #trails #hiking #Adirondack #UpstateNY #UpstateNewYork

  11. This one has *everything* – waterfalls, fires, diamond stick pins, trans-oceanic gambling! A landmark hotel opened by an African-American caterer! And, to my great surprise, the discovery of what I believe are remnants of the last version of this long-lost resort. Today I'm telling the story of The Cataract House at Cohoes Falls. 12. I was about to not bother bringing #kayaks on our short weekend trip back to the old hometown, but then our grownkid said they wanted to paddle with us . . . and we had the most delightful afternoon on the #MohawkRiver in a section I didn't used to paddle that much. So much more and better access than there used to be. The first time we've all paddled together in separate boats. #UpstateNY #UpstateNewYork #paddling #kayaking #kayak #river #rivers

  13. I went home again, back to where I once belonged, and wrote about what it means to paddle the river channel where I learned to love the outdoors and being on the water.

  14. After writing about the #UpstateNewYork carpet heiress/big game hunter/POW in Germany, I paid a tiny bit of attention to her famous polo player brother, once on the cover of Time Magazine – though I was more interested in the time he was fined for bringing too many ducks into New York State:

  15. Back in 1963, residents of #Schenectady's Stockade were so dissatisfied with the look of a modern steel-and-glass phone booth on one of their most prominent corners that they convinced New York Telephone to do something about it. How long this alternative phone booth lasted, I have been unable to learn. More at

  16. My #LocalHistory website, @hoxsie.org, is now federating freely!

Happy to say that @activitypub solved a problem for me.

So if you're into random snippets of history about #Albany, #Schenectady, and #TroyNY, go ahead and give it a follow – it works!

  17. #AlbanyNY served up about 47 #historicalmarkers in 1886 to celebrate the city charter's bicentennial. Shocking/not shocking that only one never made it to its intended destination – the one honoring Black citizens.

  18. This 1910 #LewisWickesHine photo of #Albany #newsboys has been popping up, stripped of all information. I took a deeper dive to learn about boys who were out selling newspapers on the city streets at 10 o'clock at night. Each one saw trouble with the law, starting right around when this was taken. For some, that trouble continued their entire lives.

  19. Working on a fun #LocalHistory piece, and it turns out that I've written about "Lefty Pierce" before without knowing it – under his real name, he's featured in a fairly famous photograph by Lewis Wickes Hine of a group of #Albany newsboys. More to come. #AlbanyNY #UpstateNY #UpstateNewYork #UpstateHistory #AlbanyHistory #histodons

  20. Hoping that’s the last time I have to change plans, quickly pack up a car and outrun a winter storm. Cut short vacation and came home last night through dense fog to beat the snow. While storm timing has been pushed back, still the right choice.

Last time it was with a moving truck, overnight, to beat highway closures for a storm that never materialized. I was five years younger then.

    Picture of some beautiful winter.

  23. Writing about the Mohawk National Bank's great wig giveaway of 1970 made me dig into the history of the bank itself, which was established in 1807 as one of New York State's first four banks. It had about a 195-year run, then was merged into the usual non-local banking conglomeration.

Much more, including instructions on how to use the sidewalk teller, at the link:

  24. When Mohawk National Bank was looking to drum up some new business in 1970, it thought up a giveaway. Free dishes, like the movies used to do? Nah. Maybe some towels, like the gas stations? Nope. Toaster ovens like those other banks? Uh uh. What they came up with was: wigs. Full story on something that may have only happened in #Schenectady at my blog:

  25. Memories from our #Adirondack vacation two months ago – while we always go to roughly the same place, we're always discovering new places there. This is along the Browns Tract trail, where with a rather long portage from the road you can put in and find passage to Raquette Lake. You'll be climbing over several beaver dams along the way.

  26. I tripped upon a menu from my home city's semi-grand hotel about a century ago. I was honestly surprised at how recognizable most of the dishes were – I've seen others that featured food we'd not consider eating today, but this one looks pretty all right. 27. We were in upstate New York today, so we figured: why not check out Cheez-It’s pop-up restaurant? So, we drove up to Woodstock and went to The Cheez-In Diner.

We stood in line for nearly three hours, and the food was only okay. It was about the fun and ridiculousness of it. A Cheez-It cracker bar. Your photo in a Cheez-It convertible. A milkshake made with Cheez-Its. A jukebox that’s been modified to accept crackers instead of money (really!).

If you want to go, they’re open 4:00 PM to midnight tomorrow (Sunday) and that’s their last day. They stopped letting people onto the grounds at 8:00 PM sharp, so don’t get there late.
