  1. This is an old #rppc #postcard that I bought at a shop in #Schenectady a couple of years back. Fascinated with it but never sure just what to do with it. It's a real photo postcard showing "Dick on Mohawk River at Schenectady in 1917 while working in G.E."

General Electric's main plant was very close to the #MohawkRiver, and I can attest that even decades later, the river was subject to some mighty freezes.

  6. When I took this – or even ten years ago, for that matter – I could not have imagined that city newsstands would almost completely disappear someday. This is from November 1979, in downtown #SyracuseNY. His name was Pete Mussi, and he was a fixture there for decades. He's holding up the afternoon paper, because at the time a city the size of Syracuse could still support two newspapers.

  7. Here's another #OldPhoto I took in 1977, one of the earliest photographs I ever took. Love the tone, the composition, the feel of a relaxing moment just reading the newspaper in a public place, waiting for the day to begin. This is in #SyracuseUniversity's I.M. Pei-designed #NewhouseSchool.

  8. My great great aunt's house in West Glenville, NY, where I spent many summer days in the 1960s and '70s. While it had electricity, it did not have indoor plumbing. We had to draw water from the pump in this picture – drawn through shale, it was quite tasty (though the rag on the spout is to catch rust from the mechanism). After she died in 1985, the house was modernized and is not recognizable anymore.

  13. Downtown #Schenectady NY, probably autumn 1977. A dreary day in what was then a dreary place, even though I loved it. The Proctor's Theatre on the left has survived and expanded, the old local department store hung on into the early '90s, everything else has changed. The buildings are mostly still there, and renovated. Looking at this I mostly remember how bad the air quality was.

  14. 1977: High school pep rally attendance was mandatory. A pep rally was also the place you'd be least likely to find me – school spirit has never been my thing – but I did take some pictures, apparently, in rare color. This is our senior class president for life getting outfitted in a balloon-covered clown outfit. #oldPhotographs #OldPhotos #FilmPhotography #HighSchool #1970s

  15. Photographically, this is terrible, but it's an absolute moment in time, and that moment was 1982/83. It's me (in the center) with my roommate (left) and my other roommate and eventual wife (right). We were kinda adorable, even in the midst of an amount of misery. Absolutely kicking myself that when we got together for our 40th anniversary a couple of years ago, we didn't recreate this photo.

  16. Still in 1977 – I found some pictures of someone who's been a friend since high school and she was delighted to see them. It eventually occured to me that I may never before have shared many of these pictures that I've looked at thousands of times over the years.

I'm fortunate that so many of my friends have been in my life, at one level or another, for so many, many years.

  17. From my #highschool cafeteria in 1977: a friend of mine successfully stacks 10 waxed milk cartons on top of each other – a challenge, as the sides were never perfectly flat. This was one of many ways we killed time at lunch. #OldPhotographs #BWPhoto #filmPhotography #OldPhotos

  18. Of all the things from my past, the technology that I just cannot believe has completely disappeared is #ColdType pre-press technology – phototypesetting, pasteup, working on light tables to produce mechanicals for anything that had to be printed. These methods are just gone (while letterpress lives on). I made my living at #pasteup for several years. This is from a #journalism institute at #SyracuseUniversity in 1978. #photography #OldPhotographs #Syracuse #OffsetPrinting #FilmPhotography

  19. #SyracuseUniversity's Hendricks Chapel on a winter night in 1978. I always had a love of low light shots, even though I wouldn't say I was successful at making them very artful. This one, though, definitely evokes the loneliness of crossing the campus on a winter evening. Short handheld with Tri-X 400. There's dust on the negative but I'm not fixing these in post.

  20. 1978: college students locking up their bicycles to a tree on the #SyracuseUniversity campus, while others are locked up to a chain fence surrounding this little area. My 10-speed was stolen within the first weeks of freshman year, so I was probably jealous of their mobility. This isn't a great photograph, and yet it captures so much – the bikes, the cars, the clothes.

  21. A night shot in the eternal snow of a #Syracuse winter, 1978. A taxicab pulling up to a freshman dorm at #SyracuseUniversity at Christmas break. Always a weird lonely feeling as the campus emptied out (I was often one of the last to leave).
Looking at this, I remember thinking taxis to the bus station (or airport) were definitely for other students. It was a long walk but the taxi ride would have cost a good part of the price of my bus ticket home. #photography #OldPhotographs #BWPhoto

  22. From 1977: three high school girls attending a summer #journalism institute at #SyracuseUniversity –Mary, Kathy, Karen. That I remember their names is remarkable; I find other names in my diaries that I can't begin to put a face to. This view from the patio of the I.M. Pei-designed #NewhouseSchool no longer exists – a third Newhouse building was built there.

Rare color for me; Ektachrome, IIRC.

  23. John Cain bought a few surplus PBY Catalina flying boats after the end of WW2 and moored them on Stony Creek, near Newcastle, NSW, with plans to use them as floating holiday accommodation. The idea, alas, was too far ahead of its time.

  27. In Kyoto some years back I found a box of slides at a market. They were taken by a Japanese family who had visited Australia in the early 1960s. The family chose some interesting things to photograph, like these two girls at a post box in Melbourne. They look like they are putting finishing touches on some postcards. #oldphotographs #oldphotos #vintagephotos #phototimetunnel

  31. The legendary Young Mariners Pool, at Newcastle, NSW. It featured concrete continents for kids to sail their model boats around. The bigger pool with the arc-shaped wall was the Canoe Pool. The Young Mariners Pool opened in 1937. It kept filling with sand and the council broke it up after a hurricane in 1974. #Newcastlensw #swimmingpool #phototimetunnel #oldphotographs #oldphotos

  35. 19 Photos That Capture Las Vegas Over the Years

A busy 1950s street scene in Las Vegas with vintage cars, large neon signs for casinos like Golden Nugget and hotels, and people walking along the sidewalks under a bright sky.

Back when the Strip glowed with vintage marquees, big-band music spilled from casino lounges, and headliners like Sinatra and Elvis turned every night into an event, Las Vegas had a different kind of allure. This was the Vegas of smoky rooms, endless buffets, and star-studded stages — a time when the city was just beginning to earn its reputation as the ultimate playground for adults. These pictures tell its origin story.

    1. Honest John’s and Centerfold Casinos (1975)

    2. Cocktail Waitress at Caesars Palace (1968)

    3. Children Waiting Outside the Casino While Their Parents Are Inside (1954)

    4. Playing Slots (1942)

  37. Our staff and volunteers are processing an Ohioan's photo album from the 20th century and there are great images, like this one taken from the Empire State Building in 1934, of the many places the owner visited. They seemed to have travelled a lot and took lots of pictures.
