At any rate, I've digitized some handwritten notes. I wrote the one I'm including below to my ex-wife. The year was 1996-1997.

I've also tossed away some greeting cards that I was holding on. I know some were from my ex-wife, but I think some were also from my parents. There's little point in keeping this stuff, even if I have space for it.

Does anyone have experience with long-distance moving and transporting their computers and homelab over a couple thousand miles/kilometers?

I think I may just put the harddrives in a spare cage, stick that in a static bag, bubble wrap it, and keep it with me in the car while everything else is put into a storage container for shipping.

I don't have a ridiculous amount of gear, but it's more than I can put in the car with us.

Today's mission in what we're calling the Chicory House - our home while our actual house gets repaired - was to unpack the kitchen. I think it's looking pretty good!

(The cardboard box you can see contains pans we brought with us that turn out to be incompatible with the induction hobs at the Chicory House, boo!)

Next weekend's mission will be to set myself up a workspace that isn't the conservatory dining table. 😬

Most people and organizations are paralyzed by a single, haunting question: "What if I fail?"

They spend months (sometimes years) conducting risk assessments and feasibility studies, all designed to protect themselves from the sting of a mistake. They personally try to avoid risk, or in the case of companies, have entire risk management teams, whose goal is to minimize and eliminate risk. They insulate themselves from bold moves because they cannot bear to see things go wrong.

And in doing so, they miss out on a lot of opportunity - and come to regret it later.

What's worse? Trying to do something and seeing it go wrong? Or thinking back years later, "I should have tried to do it!"

In my own 36-year voyage, I’ve learned that the most dangerous risk isn't the pivot that goes wrong: it's the pivot that never happens. We need to stop obsessing over the cost of a "miss" and start focusing on the only question that truly matters: "What if I never try at all?"

Think of it this way: failure is a temporary setback but a valuable asset. You can learn from it, adjust, and pivot again. But the idea of never trying at all results in a permanent loss of potential. You don't learn and become stuck where you are, missing out on the chance to go where you should be going.

I’ve sat in boardrooms with legacy companies that are now obsolete, not because they made a bad bet, but because they were too afraid to place a bet at all. They chose the "safety" of the status quo, only to find that the status quo had moved on without them.

The Infinite Pivot isn't about being fearless; it’s about being more afraid of standing still than you are of moving forward. When you look back at your career or your company’s history a decade from now, you won't remember the small stumbles.

You will only remember the doors you were too scared to open.

It's fifty-five days since my house flooded. Since then, I've lived in hotels, with friends, on volunteering retreats and - mostly - in a series of one- or two-week AirBnB-style short-term lets. It's been wild. It's also been wildly disruptive. To our work. To our kids. To our general stability.

Today, we make a change. Today we're moving into a medium-term let: sonewhere we can stay for the... say... six months or so it'll take to actually repair our house so we can move back in. We'll have our own space again in a way we haven't in a couple of months.

I know the hard work isn't done. Our house is still a wreck! But it feels like, perhaps, we're beginning the second act of the three-act play "The Year Of The Flood". And that feels like progress.

Right, I'd better go move house! (for like the seventh time this year...)
