I have carried this laminated card in my wallet for more than 14 years, and now it is useless. On 13 July 2026, I got an email from the Institute for Plastination saying that they will no longer maintain their program for body donors in North America, of which I was one. In case you don’t know what plastination is, let’s rewind the clock a bit.
In 2011, a girlfriend took me on one of the most mind-blowing dates I’ve ever experienced: the Body Worlds exhibit at the Arizona Science Center in downtown Phoenix. I didn’t know jack about it beforehand, so I walked into this thing completely unprepared for the most in-your-face anatomy lesson imaginable.
The human bodies, stripped of skin, posed so you could see inside them, pulled apart so you could examine every detail of muscle and organ—all of that was amazing. But the image that stuck with the most over the years is a glass box with the entire blood system of chicken, and nothing else remaining of the chicken, arranged with delicate precision in the shape of the chicken.
I hated dissection labs in high school biology in the 1980s. It seemed cruel and barbaric to torture and kill animals for no reason other than for eighth graders to cut them up and make a general mess of things without learning much. But as I learned that day in 2011, the Body Worlds exhibit—as far as the human displays went—was based on voluntary donations of people who wanted to be part of the program.
When I was leaving the exhibit and discovered you could sign up to donate your body to be a specimen for this awe-inspiring project, I grabbed all the paperwork. There was an application, and you needed to get it signed by family or witnesses, and you had an opportunity to make a written statement. Mine was about science and religion.
In January of 2012, a couple of weeks before my birthday, my donor ID card arrived along with some paperwork and a folded brochure that told people who to call if I died. The IfP would arrange to pick up the body and fly it to Europe—just so long as I didn’t kill myself. Then the deal was off, and that makes a lot of sense. It would be bad press for the IfP if they had to change their motto to “People are just dying to join us!”
But now the costs of all that have gone way up, so the only way they will accept donors from North America is if the survivors arrange all the details and pay for everything—and who has time for all that?
So, I have retired my plastination card. It’s been in my pocket on some of the best and some of the worst nights of my life. It’s been to bonfires, gigs, shows, and both the east and west coast.
Sometimes I’d take it out and think, you know, the worst that can happen now is that I end up like that chicken in a glass box: on display in all my gory, naked, honest beauty. All the ugly truth and undeniable magic of human life. All the baffling detail. All the wordless poetry. All the people lined up to see it.
