For Nancy Letina, chairperson of Namaiyana Women’s Group within the Paran network, joining the collective in 2021 transformed not only how she viewed conservation but also her family’s economic future.
" 'Previously, as #Maasai women, we depended on our husbands for everything, even household items like salt,' Letina said. But in 2019, that changed after her husband died, leaving her as the breadwinner with the responsibility to provide for her four children.
"The first two years after losing her husband were difficult. Together with a handful of women facing similar hardships from Olomaiayana-Iltirben village in Melelo ward, Letina formed a self-help group that supported members during times of need. Their fortunes began to change when the group joined Paran and received training in #sustainable livelihood activities.
" 'We gained knowledge that showed us that every woman can also fend for herself. Today, women have their own income. We can pay school fee arrears when our children are sent home and respond to emergencies without waiting for assistance.'
"Her group currently manages a 0.2-hectare (half-acre) #TreeNursery where they grow indigenous species such as the African olive (Olea europaea subsp. africana), valued in forest restoration for supporting #biodiversity and also widely used in traditional medicine, which they periodically supply to Paran. Letina’s group has sold 10,600 indigenous tree seedlings to the organization since joining. One seedling goes for 20 shillings ($0.15). The proceeds support both members and group activities."

Coastal, indigenous women demand climate policy inclusion as salinity crisis deepens
Participants described deteriorating living conditions and increasingly frequent climate-induced disasters
Coastal and indigenous women, among the most affected by climate change, have called for stronger inclusion in climate policymaking, saying their lived experiences and knowledge are largely excluded from environmental governance and development planning.
The call came during a community dialogue titled 'Climate, Women and Women’s Health', held in Datinakhali area of Burigoalini Union under Shyamnagar upazila in Satkhira on the occasion of World Environment Day.
The event was organized by Santal, a rights-based organization working with women, indigenous and marginalized communities, in collaboration with Bonjibi Nari Unnayan Sangathan and SAYA (Social Action for Youth Alliance). Women forest workers, fishers, farmers, tiger widows and members of the Munda community took part in the discussion.
Participants described deteriorating living conditions driven by rising salinity, shortages of safe drinking water, livelihood insecurity and increasingly frequent climate-induced disasters. Many said they are forced to collect water from distant sources and carry heavy containers on their heads or waists every day—work that often continues even during pregnancy, posing risks to maternal and child health.
They also reported a rise in climate-related health problems, including skin diseases, reproductive health complications, urinary tract infections, high blood pressure, dehydration, joint pain and chronic weakness. According to participants, prolonged exposure to saline water, combined with limited access to healthcare, has turned many of these conditions into long-term health issues.
In several areas, they said ponds, canals and tube wells have become saline, forcing communities to depend on unsafe water for drinking, cooking, bathing and washing. Pregnant women, adolescents, elderly people and those with pre-existing illnesses were identified as the most vulnerable.
Child marriage was also flagged as a growing concern. Participants said climate-driven poverty, health stress and livelihood instability are pushing many families to marry off daughters early, contributing to adolescent pregnancy, malnutrition, maternal health risks and rising school dropouts.
Highlighting exclusion from decision-making spaces, a local woman leader said: 'During various major meetings and seminars, when we are given the chance to speak about the Sundarbans, we are told we have only two minutes. But the women who are struggling every day with saline water, storms, river erosion, livelihood insecurity and poverty to keep the Sundarbans and the coast alive cannot tell their story in two minutes.'
Participants said the remark reflects the broader exclusion of coastal and indigenous women from policy spaces despite being at the frontline of climate impacts."
Most pregnant Indigenous women in Canada have drastically different public health care experiences than other pregnant Canadian women. Many pregnant Indigenous women still have valid, justified fears about systematic racism in public health care because most are still treated like shit. That is a fact. I refuse to give much praise to Canadian public health care until they actually do better, on this ongoing systematic racism issue - as well as doing better on masking up in all medical/health care settings. Eugenics in Canada is happening to this day - with ongoing systematic racism & lack of public health safety by medical staff, who should know better but aren't choosing to do better.

" 'Out of those 4,030 interactions, it’s come out to be about 550 different women that are accessing services. So, that a woman could be there for five minutes, five hours, five days, whatever it may be, that’s what we mean,' Tribal Chief Mark Arcand of the #SaskatoonTribalCouncil said.
" 'So, it’s alarming to see that many women in need inside of two months for our services.'
"The Saskatoon Tribal Council was asked to run the women’s warmup shelter this winter. It opened on Nov. 7 at the old bus depot downtown, running 14 hours a day, but they transitioned to Avenue C on Dec. 22 which is open 24 hours a day."
