  1. Please make time to listen to Tahlia Isaac's International Women's Day Address from 2025, speaking from her personal experiences and the stories of others, about how we treat Indigenous women whom society labels as "criminals" and locks up for overwhelmingly minor offences, further oppressing them and pushing them into poverty and recidivism.

In my opinion, if you think prisons perform a necessary function in society for separating the "bad" from the "good" and keeping communities safe, or that police and the courts are fair and just, then you don't yet understand the system.

  7. #Saskatoon women’s-only #WarmingCentre seeing alarming numbers

    By Ashley Beherns Global News
    Posted January 8, 2026

Excerpt: "The women’s-only shelter in Saskatoon has seen concerning numbers this winter, with 4,030 visits from women within the two months since opening, 92 per cent being #Indigenous.

" 'Out of those 4,030 interactions, it’s come out to be about 550 different women that are accessing services. So, that a woman could be there for five minutes, five hours, five days, whatever it may be, that’s what we mean,' Tribal Chief Mark Arcand of the #SaskatoonTribalCouncil said.

" 'So, it’s alarming to see that many women in need inside of two months for our services.'

"The Saskatoon Tribal Council was asked to run the women’s warmup shelter this winter. It opened on Nov. 7 at the old bus depot downtown, running 14 hours a day, but they transitioned to Avenue C on Dec. 22 which is open 24 hours a day."

  8. Indigenous women are vital defenders of their territories, biodiversity and ancestral knowledge.

Across Peru, Mexico and Colombia, three leaders show how they restore ecosystems, strengthen community health and build political and economic power amid violence and environmental pressures.

By caring for bees, water and Amazonian communities, they’re protecting life now and for future generations.

  16. Brazil’s Cerrado savanna has experienced its worst fire season on record, but a tiny Indigenous territory here has for four years now kept the flames at bay.

The volunteer brigade made up largely of Bakairi Indigenous women has been instrumental in preventing major fires from devastating the Santana Indigenous Territory in Mato Grosso state.

  17. Over the past two decades, a group of women in Lampang province, Thailand, have taken action to improve their local environment and curb sources of haze by restoring their local community forest.

Their bold approach to fire prevention — combining regular patrols, check dams and fire breaks, as well as an innovative wildfire alert system — has earned them a reputation as a regional model for other communities.

    July 18, 2025

"We speak to Loris Taylor, president of #NativePublicMedia, about the Trump administration’s drastic #defunding of public media and its impact on tribal nations. Fifty-nine #TribalRadioStations and one tribal #TelevisionStation that depend on federal funding will be among the first to face possible closure, putting some of the essential services that #PublicBroadcasting provides, including warning systems for missing #IndigenousWomen and girls, at risk.

"Taylor shares how Native-led public media helps preserve #IndigenousLanguages and helped keep communities informed during the peak of the COVID-19 #pandemic. She fears that without these same resources and 'with the #ClimateCrisis increasing, [we] are going to be operating on the margins of information and are not going to have real lifesaving information available to our citizens when they need it most.' However, the community where I was didn't bake their own ceramic. So it's fascinating to see how they do it in this documentary.

Anyway, this is great news that the cultural heritage of the Huni Kuin peoples is finally recognised officially 🥇

    Building the #SettlerColonial Order: #Police (In)Actions in Response to #Violence Against #IndigenousWomen in #Canada

    Abstract:

In this article we focus on missing and murdered #Indigenous women, girls, and #2SLGBTQQIA people in Canada. We theorize narratives that police employ to respond to this violence. Using a broad data sample of #testimonies across Canada, this article contributes to understanding how police (in)actions make sense of, justify, and dismiss violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people. We draw from 48 in-depth semi-structured interviews with Indigenous peoples in Toronto and other Canadian cities and 219 testimonies from the Canadian National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (NIMMIWG). The #analysis finds that police repeatedly use similar frames (topics), styles (linguistic and behavioral strategies), and storylines (narratives) to respond to violence against Indigenous peoples. While framing Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people as deviants helps police make sense of and explain violence against them, the use of verbal and behavioral strategies (indifference, callousness, and lack of information) and storylines (“they were [insert pathologizing frame]” and “there’s nothing we can do”) allows police to dismiss and justify acts of violence. We argue that the frames, styles, and storylines employed by police perpetuate violence. Police (in)actions are fundamental to achieving settler #colonialism’s ideological and material dimensions.

  37. Twiggy leads #Indigenous #drumming & singing healing ceremony to help us deal with the multiple day/night raids at river & landback resistance camps. This was around 2pm in afternoon. River & Landback camp crews united for ceremony before going back to our old growth defense stations. By this time, both camps had suffered multiple raids by RCMP CIRG. I had not slept in 3 days. I was taking short rest breaks on cot on bridge, in between going into hard & soft blocks, all day/night for over a week. I chained myself to the bridge for 5 days prior to this ceremony & used a bucket to pee/poop - frontlines activism is not for the weak/people who can't survive without comforts.
