NO ORDINARY RISKS: THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA
In 1847, HBC trader Alexander Hunter Murray built Fort #Yukon, on the Yukon River at its junction with the Porcupine. It was the first of two posts to be built on the Yukon River--Robert Campbell built his Fort Selkirk shortly after Murray built Fort Yukon. #Journeys #ThreeJourneysNorth #NoOrdinaryRisks https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/fort-yukon/ -

NO ORDINARY RISKS: THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA
In 1850, the steamer Beaver hit a submerged rock on the West side of Vancouver's Island, and damaged her keel badly enough that she had to be taken out of service. Interestingly, this accident seems to have been connected with the trade at Fort Selkirk on the #Yukon River, when some expected Indigenous men did not travel from the coast into the interior. #Journeys #ThreeJourneysNorth #NoOrdinaryRisks https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/accident-to-the-beaver/ -

NO ORDINARY RISKS: THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA
In 1847, both measles and dysentery arrived in the Columbia district, and spread everywhere, following the brigade trails North, and the seacoast all the way up to the #Yukon, via the massive Indigenous Rendezvous held every year on the Stikine River. The diseases killed thousands of Indigenous people. #Journeys #ThreeJourneysNorth #NoOrdinaryRisks https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/measles-and-dysentery/ -

“People are very aware that they can’t have standing garbage on their properties,” Oborne says.
“They really understand what you need to do to keep the community safe and keep the #bears safe.”

What books featuring nature or the great outdoors come to mind?My favorite books about the "great outdoors" right now (and some of my fav books right now), are by Kelley Armstrong. The Rockton series and its sequel series, Haven's Rock. Set in Canada's Yukon, these are small communities of people living almost totally off the grid (for reasons).
They have strict community rules (for acceptance & to stay).
It's no easy life.

NO ORDINARY RISKS: THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA
In the Journal of Occurrences of the HBC's post, Fort Selkirk, we can read of the difficulties of keeping alive and well in a country so far from any other community that they must be completely self-sufficient--not an easy task in the North. #Journeys #NoOrdinaryRisks #Yukon #ThreeJourneysNorth https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/fort-selkirk-post-journals/ -

@jimfl You can also do a loop: Drive to Skagway, Ferry to Haines, Drive (back towards Skagway), or in opposite direction. Best to make ferry rez.
If you have time, I recommend visiting Hyder/Stewart in the Misty Fjord National Monument off of Cassiar Hwy. Pretty cool place.
Dont forget to bring the Calvin and Hobbes book about the Yukon"
Adding hashtags so others might join in with even better recommendations.

NO ORDINARY RISKS: THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA
From Finlayson's Lake, north of Frances Lake, Robert Campbell and his men carried their provisions over the low height of land to the banks of the Pelly River, and then canoed down that river to his new post of Fort Selkirk, on the #Yukon River. #Journeys #ThreeJourneysNorth #NoOrdinaryRisks https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/finlayson-lake-to-fort-selkirk/ -

NO ORDINARY RISKS: THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA
In 1839, Robert Campbell made his first journey up the violent and rapid-filled Liard River to Frances Lake and on to Pelly Banks, on the Pelly River in the #Yukon. No other HBC man had made this journey before him, but many would follow this trail North in later years. #ThreeJourneysNorth #NoOrdinaryRisks #Journeys https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/liard-4/ -

Ivvavik: A Place for Giving Birth
Ivvavik, Canada's first national park created through an Indigenous land claim agreement, has a name that means 'a place for giving birth' in Inuvialuktun. It protects the vital calving grounds of the Porcupine Caribou Herd. Each year, thousands of caribou migrate here to have their young, making it a cornerstone of Gwich'in culture and ecological stability. #Canada #Ivvavik #Yukon #Caribou 🇨🇦

THE YORK FACTORY EXPRESS: FORT VANCOUVER TO HUDSON BAY, 1826-1849
Somehow, John O'Brien appears in all my stories. Here he is travelling in the York Factory Express, heading to #Edmonton House. But I found him on the Northwest coast, and later he turns up in the #Yukon working for Robert Campbell. #YorkFactoryExpress #Journeys #CanadaHistory https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/john-obrien/ -
