“Permafrost soils are particularly vulnerable to climate change. To assess and improve estimations of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) budgets it is necessary to accurately map soil carbon and nitrogen in the permafrost region. In particular, soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks have been predicted and mapped by many studies from local to pan-Arctic scales. Several studies have been carried out at the Canadian Beaufort Sea coast, though no regional maps of terrestrial carbon stocks based on spatial modelling has been conducted yet. This study combines available field data from the Canadian Yukon coastal plain and uses it to map regional SOC and N stocks using the machine learning algorithm random forest and environmental variables based on remote sensing data. [The authors] developed models using the data for the entire region and separate models for the coastal mainland area and Qikiqtaruk Herschel Island. Each model was used to map SOC and N stocks for its respective area. [They] assessed the performance of the different random forest models by using crossvalidation. [They] further assessed model results using the Area of Applicability (AOA) method and the quantile regression forest approach, comparing the results and discussing their implications within the context of both methods. [They] explore[d] local differences in soil properties and how soil data distribution across the region affects the accuracy of the predictions of SOC and N stocks..."

  9. Yukon's Permanent Daylight Time! ☀️⏰

Yukon made a unique decision in 2020: it permanently switched to what is effectively Pacific Daylight Time, meaning it stays at UTC-7 year-round. No more changing clocks! This aligns it with Mountain Standard Time, offering consistent daylight hours and simplifying life for residents. #Canada #TimeZones #Yukon #NoDST

  10. @Priyajsridhar
What books featuring nature or the great outdoors come to mind?

My favorite books about the "great outdoors" right now (and some of my fav books right now), are by Kelley Armstrong. The Rockton series and its sequel series, Haven's Rock. Set in Canada's Yukon, these are small communities of people living almost totally off the grid (for reasons).

They have strict community rules (for acceptance & to stay).

    It's no easy life.

Pierre Pambrun Jr. worked at Robert Campbell's Frances Lake post, and also at Pelly Banks. In 1850 or so, the Pelly Banks Post was consumed by a fire which destroyed all their provisions and warm clothes and also left them without ammunition in the middle of winter. 23. Experts working with the #FirstNation of #NaChoNyäkDun who have witnessed the fallout at #VictoriaGoldEagle mine near #Mayo, #Yukon, say systems on-site are so severely compromised that damage to the land & water is all but inevitable.

What they describe is a system rendered mostly #inoperable, with each affected piece elevating #risks to the #environment — every day.

On June 24, part of the Eagle #mine failed and a massive #RockSlide involving roughly 4 million tonnes of material cleaved off a large piece of the facility where #gold is extracted from ore using a chemical process called cyanide heap leach. Estimates put the amount of ore stacked on the heap leach pad — which functions as a giant industrial percolator — at nearly 4 times what was lost in the slide.

With the #HeapLeach pad downed, experts say a #toxic soup of #SodiumCyanide & other #contaminants — up to 300,000 cubic metres of solution, according to the #YukonGovernment — was released in the initial slide. Since then, they say, more of it has been draining.

The First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun has called the event "the region's most recent and potentially #catastrophic #mining failure."

The Agreement ensures the conservation and protection of almost 8,500 km² of the Eastern Yukon North Slope called Aullaviat/Anguniarvik

The area is larger than Banff National Park and is an important contribution toward Canada’s goal of conserving 30 percent of lands and waters in Canada by 2030
