  1. Continuing yogurt update: Filmjölk on the first try was kinda curd-like and too watery. I strained off the whey and used the rest in pancakes. Then decided to make another batch with the whey. The second batch came out smooth and the consistency of crème fraîche, so that’s a win! Currently culturing another pass at Matsoni to see if it improves on a second round.

Next step is to taste test and pick a household yogurt. I’m not gonna be tending and maintaining three different strains here. 😂

That said, if someone on the Eastside of #Seattle wants any of these heirloom yogurt cultures, I’m happy to share before I pare! (I mean, I’ll share with Seattlites too, but you gotta come to me ;-) I’m easily biking distance to the Line 2 or a longer walk there.)

  5. But how can I #white father raise a #mixed woman and teach her how to use her #biracial leverage? She got raised in white suburbia. #Redmond and #MercerIsland. High-end #suburbia. I could have moved the family to #Capital #Hill near #Garfield. What happened happened. A different version of this.

So this is literally my very first time in #penguin territory after 28 years on a platform of empty promises , uh, #Redmond , anyone?I have to first describe my somewhat unique situation before I can go into the specs of how I got here. As per the situation, I'm totally blind since birth, so the most important piece of software is actually a piece of 'critical spyware' in the sense that it reads the code from various objects to 'draw' my desktop, then speak the contents in focus to me via speech. That's what a #ScreenReader does. In the Windows world, this would have been either #Narrator , #JawsForWindows , or #NVDA from #NVAccess . On Windows since 2006 I've proudly used NVDA to traverse the increasingly evil Microsoft (now hardened) interface. It initially came with 8 gb of RAM, but since updated to 32 gb to future-proof looking forward. I had to retire the battery because when I first got the Latitude, the touch pad + a part of the keyboard were swollen. So I've been on AC power per the past 3 years. I should preface this by saying I Am One of Those that Does Want to See what's happening under the hood, so just prior to Wednesday, February 25th, just 3 days shy of #OperationEpicFury , I had an aggressively tweaked Windows session (complete with only a local profile on Windows 11 Professional) and a heap of registry files + batch+command+PowerShell scripts to totally de-damn the junk, block telemetry addresses+ports, unhide all 177 'hidden' UltimatePerformance power plan settings; Even a customized PS1 prompt with my user name@host name; date;time: Then my command input followed by the output on the next line. Had everything all set and ready to fly. But, as is standard practice in the Windows world, I shut down just before going to bed (almost wish I hadn't...), because:... Thursday, February 26th, - After powering the Dell just to check EMail, I got an awkward message on my screen: "No boot device detected" I just 'quiet'ly 'splash'ed it off, knowing the switch was nigh. Next week, around Friday March 6th, another friend of my brother introduces me to Linux Mint, but not a fully installed copy. It was a 'live' image that I somehow could not install a full copy of Mint to my SSD (quintessentially stateless computing at its peak). I somehow survived with that for 9 days till a bad #Florida #Thunderstorm took my power away! Now that Mint was gone, it twas time to see the evil 'snap philosophy' of 'humanity towards others'. He (Gemini) directed me as to how to fully format and nuke the Ubuntu image once and for all! Then, burn the Mint+Mate image to the GigaStone! The #GigaStone is now officially a - #FlintStone ! 8. Microsoft Softens Stance After Public Feud with 0-Day Researcher

Microsoft has backpedaled in its public feud with a 0-day researcher, easing tensions with the security community after facing criticism for its aggressive stance. The tech giant now explicitly assures that vulnerability hunters are not in its legal crosshairs.

  9. Built two little #Meshtastic base stations with @Wham today, connected my phone to mine and ... meh. We could text each other, sitting 5' apart, and nothing else came into our map view and honestly the phone app was confusing as heck to use.

Took my station home, flashed the firmware to #meshcore as a "companion" and already have a map populated with 16 repeaters. I'm in #redmond and have corresponded with folks in Ballard, Olympia, and Sammamish tonight. MeshCore seems like the way to go around these parts.

I've got a smaller SenseCAP Card Tracker T1000-E on the way with the intent of changing it to my companion. Plan is to then re-flash the device I have to be a repeater and set it up near a window on my 2nd floor.

  11. weebeers.com/2026/05/25/single Science Box Experiment at RBG from Single Hill Brewing A good mid-day craft beer excursion is best when trying something I haven't had before, like Science Box by Single Hill Brewing. It's even better when paired with classic pub fare from a great local restaurant like Redmond’s Bar and Grill (RBG) in downtown Redmond. It was an easy decision to go with #beer #craftbeer #redmond #singlehillbrewing #weebeers

I have a more complicated view of AI than an automatic “fuck off”, but if you’re in King County (#seattle #redmond #bellevue) and use libraries, definitely worth sharing your views.

It’s not completely clear to me what they’re considering. Reading between lines I see maybe chatbots on the site (no thank you) and maybe some educational programs for people who don’t know about AI now (could be good, depending on what’s presented).

  14. If you've been paying attention to the Bel-Red buffered bike lane project, you've been noticing literally nothing happening even through the project page still says construction started months ago and will be finished by summer.

It still says that today, but if you go to the _City of Redmond Traffic Cameras_ page, you can zoom in on the area and 1) FINALLY see some work being done and 2) find if you hover over the right things that it's only actually been going a few weeks (out of camera range) and won't be finished 'til September.

So if you've been thinking these'll be infrastructure you can use this summer, you can forget about that.

  24. Art Link

It’s spring break for Seattle Schools. One of our first big activities yesterday was my mom’s idea: to ride the newly opened Link Line 2 all the way to Redmond, checking out all of the station art along the way. Sound Transit has an interactive map of all of the installations! Plus we’re rarely Eastside so it’s an opportunity to explore a bit.

    Outbound

They took the fast ferry from Southworth and we took our usual bus, meeting on the platform at Pioneer Square Station, which oddly I don’t think I’ve ever used before! We didn’t have to wait long for a train which we took to the first new station, Judkins Park.

    Timelapse along I-90

There we saw Barbara Earl Thomas’s piece A Walk in the Neighborhood as we waited for the next train across the lake.

Next up was the engineering marvel of our trip, the world’s only floating rail bridge. That’s neat in and of itself! We had a grey Seattle morning so the mountain was not out.

At Mercer Island, a place I have previously only passed through on I-90, we saw Beliz Brother’s stroke and crossing suspended above the platform stairs and Julie Berger’s Ghost Ship Migrations across the street by the completely full Park & Ride.

We decided we’d stop at other stations on our way back, so we rode through all the way to the end of the line at Downtown Redmond, chatting and appreciating all of the transit-oriented development going in. My parents shared their memories of what the area was like in the late ’70s if they happened to come this way.

In Redmond I liked the big mosaic panels, including Cable Griffith’s Bitstreams and Julie Paschkis’ Bicycle Series/Traveler Series.

We stopped briefly at the open but oddly empty Redmond Town Center mall lifestyle center to use a bathroom. (I really think Sound Transit should have gone for attended station bathrooms but I guess that would cost too much.)

    Inbound

We had spotted a few pieces on the outbound leg we wanted to stop back for, so up first was enemy territory at Redmond Technology. We touched Dan Webb’s Move Your Boulder (which is already gathering moss) and the very cool and fractal ceiling-mounted Journey and Connection by Kate Sweeney.

Our next stop down the line was BelRed, which features Patrick Marold’s Wandering Line subtly built into the station guardrails. Across the street on the fence was Brady Black’s colorful mixed media mural Joyful Connections, which was funded through the BelRed Arts District Community, not SoundTransit STArt. Across the street on the other side was a polished metal horn sculpture reminiscent of Chicago’s Bean. I was surprised this East Link segment along Spring Boulevard isn’t grade-separated like the rest.

We exited at Bellevue Downtown right next to city hall to go grab lunch. First we spent some time in the plaza which has a neat reflecting fountain.

After enjoying some tasty salads/bowls at the downtown Evergreens we walked a ways down the hill to the south to board at East Main. This is across from the Hilton where we went to OrcaCon in January 2020. We passed an abandoned Toys “R” Us that now houses some Bubble Planet experience.

We crossed back to Seattle, seeing a number of folks heading to the Mariners game, and exited at Pioneer Square, and briefly stopped in at Magic Mouse Toys, which I hadn’t been in since 2012. My parents headed to the new ferry terminal and we headed back to 3rd Ave to catch a bus home.

A lovely transit exploration of the region and some of the new art commissioned for the East Link stations. Highly recommended, even if you don’t have a reason to be Eastside.

  28. I received a response from King County Parks to my request for more information and to find a suitable detour regarding the upcoming East Lake Sammamish Trail closure from May thru late fall. Unfortunately, it’s not looking good.

For context, this trail closure means that the only way one could bike between Issaquah and Redmond is around the west side of Lake Sammamish or climbing into the city of Sammamish for most of the year
