[Short film] #Enchukunoto (The Return)
Laissa Malih with John Ole Tingoi (#Maasai)
"As the first female Maasai filmmaker, Laissa Malih initially set out to document the land-based practices of her forefathers and ways in which climate change is reshaping Maasai communities. In returning to the IL-Laikipiak Maasai village that her parents left when she was a child, Malih experiences an epiphany: her own life is a reflection of the myriad challenges between Maasai youth and elders, women and men, ancestral ways of passing down essential knowledge and modern methods of education.
"In ENCHUKUNOTO (The Return), Malih’s singular perspective also challenges ways in which the Maasai peoples have long been seen and documented by tourists and other outsiders. 'Many tourists come to our Maa lands to film the lions, the gazelles,' she observes. 'The camera takes and takes. I wonder what my camera can give my people in return?'
"Interweaving verite with Malih’s insights, Malih offers a heretofore unseen perspective as an insider and an outsider, a woman among men, a filmmaker carrying on sacred Maasai traditions of storytelling in an era defined by uncertainty."

#HRW to #Tanzania: Stop forcing #indigenous tribes off #ancestral lands
Voice of America
01 Aug 2024, 04:05 GMT+10Nairobi - "#HumanRightsWatch is accusing Tanzania of forcing indigenous tribes from their ancestral land in the #Ngorongoro Conservation Area. In a report released Wednesday, the rights group documents a Tanzanian government program to move 82,000 people off their land to use it for wildlife conservation, #tourism and hunting.
"The Ngorongoro Conservation Area in northern Tanzania is a U.N. #WorldHeritageSite managed by the Tanzanian government. For centuries, the #Maasai tribe has lived in the area side by side with wild animals.
"In 2022, the government of Tanzania launched a program to encourage the voluntary relocation of the Maasai tribe from the conservation area to Msomera, a town about 600 kilometers (370 miles) away.
"However, what the government called a voluntary relocation plan was far from voluntary, Human Rights Watch says.
"Allan Ngari, the group's Africa advocacy director, said the forced movement of the people is against the Tanzanian constitution and international law.
"'There are clear violations, including the Maasai people's rights to consultation, including prior to planning and execution of the #relocation, the prohibition of #ForcedEvictions, which is happening even for #Msomera residents. And then their culture and development has been inhibited,' Ngari said. "So, there's just a general disregard of the obligations by the government that raises serious concerns about the prospects of any accountability, justice."

Blog: #IndigenousPeoples are the custodians and protectors of our earth
09 August 2024
By Akil Crichlow, et al.
"Over 3.3 billion people are highly vulnerable to climate change, with socioeconomic factors like gender, class, race, clanship, and ethnicity exacerbating this, particularly for women, children in low-income households, and #IndigenousPeoples.
"Therefore, it is critical that an all-of-society approach is strengthened so that we mitigate and adapt to the impacts of a changing climate, recover lost #biodiversity and degraded land, and deploy an #ecosystem-based adaptation model."
[...]
"Across the Atlantic, to #Tanzania in #EastAfrica, pastoralists are another of the Commonwealth’s Indigenous peoples. They include the #Barabaig and the #Maasai, as well as #huntergatherers like the #Hadzabe, #Akiye and #Sandawe.
"These groups lead diverse livelihoods but share a profound connection to the land. However, they face significant challenges regarding land tenure security. Despite the challenges, hope is not lost."

It was a very special day for participants in Transition Chipping Norton's outdoor youth project which they run in partnership with Learn2Sustain.
They recently hosted a group from the Maasai community in Kenya, cooking lunch for them, exploring each others culture and lives, and sharing some fun and games.
People from all ages and projects in the Transition group later enjoyed a campfire supper and the chance to connect with each other at an ancient stone circle near the town, watching the sunset together and reflecting on the exchange and our common humanity.
Cara Hedges from the group said it reminded everyone "what we do here affects those that are in Africa, how simple their life is and how complex we’ve made ours and just spend some time reflecting on what we can do to support all of those that we are affecting with our choices.”

Another urgent request from the Maasai of Tanzania to sign and/or SHARE the petition "Tanzania: Stop the eviction of the Maasai". It has been running since 2022 and initially seemed successful: https://secure.avaaz.org/campaign/en/maasai_evictions_sg_loc
Current appeal [slightly shortened]:
"In a matter of days, 27,000 Maasai could lose their ancestral land! Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan wants to clear the Maasai homeland for #safaris and trophy hunting in the hope of immense profits. A few years ago, 3 million signatories stood up for the Maasai - and the president at the time listened to us. Now they are asking for support again."#Tanzania #Maasai #Africa #Indigenous #displacement #eviction #safari #trophyHunting #luxury #gentrification #petition #Samia_Suluhu_Hassan #SamiaSuluhuHassan #Conservation #WildlifeConservation

Maasai
