  3. I've seen this posted by a lot of people on facebook, but not here. It is never the business of outsiders to tell Indigenous communities whether it's worth learning and maintaining their languages or not. That seems just so obvious. The phrasing of "putting an endangered language out of its misery" is really getting to me, more than the rest somehow. Maybe because languages don't actually have nerve endings that could be feeling pain, but people who are desperately trying to get their languages back into use do. I also think that if we think of the language as a living being, it would be so happy to start being spoken again or spoken more, even if not yet enough. I've only read the response, and I'm not sure I could face the original article. endangeredlanguages.com/story/ #IndigenousLanguages #Linguistics

  5. So, signing up for this course (taught online) this Fall. I'll be auditing the course because it's all about the knowledge for me at this point (and I want there to be enough students to justify teaching this. 25 slots, 6 filled already).

    WAB 101 - Beginning #WabanakiLanguage I

"This beginning course in a #Wabanaki language stresses the acquisition of cultural information and introduces the student to the four skills of language learning: listening comprehension, reading, speaking, and writing."

  10. Future looks bleak for #Anihšināpēmowin, other language programs at #FirstNationsUniversity

“It's been a challenge, and I felt let down by FNU,” a student says

Darla Ponace · CBC News · Posted: Jan 16, 2026 6:00 AM EST | Last Updated: January 16

Excerpt: "For nearly two decades, Lorena Lynn Cote has taught Anihšināpēmowin at First Nations University of Canada.

"Cote, an assistant professor in the Department of Indigenous Languages, said she's losing faith in the university's commitment to ensuring the restoration and revitalization of the #Saulteaux language.

"When she first started teaching there, she was proud to say she worked at a university where #Indigenous students could re-learn their languages and even get degrees in Indigenous languages in hopes of keeping them alive, but things have changed over the years, Cote said.

"The only language degree now offered is in #Cree, and other languages are no longer being taught at higher levels, she said.

"She is sad and feels hopeless in the fight to keep advocating for the language program her aunt helped to create, Cote told CBC News.

" 'Our language classes have been getting cancelled,' she said. 'We do offer the 100 and 101, and that's just basic introductory language.' "

  19. #Trump Cuts to #PublicMedia Threaten #NativeAmerican Stations That Protect #Culture & #PublicHealth, Issue Alerts

    July 18, 2025

"We speak to Loris Taylor, president of #NativePublicMedia, about the Trump administration’s drastic #defunding of public media and its impact on tribal nations. Fifty-nine #TribalRadioStations and one tribal #TelevisionStation that depend on federal funding will be among the first to face possible closure, putting some of the essential services that #PublicBroadcasting provides, including warning systems for missing #IndigenousWomen and girls, at risk.

"Taylor shares how Native-led public media helps preserve #IndigenousLanguages and helped keep communities informed during the peak of the COVID-19 #pandemic. She fears that without these same resources and 'with the #ClimateCrisis increasing, [we] are going to be operating on the margins of information and are not going to have real lifesaving information available to our citizens when they need it most.' "
