  1. Since Monday, the #PleiadesGazetteer editorial college has published 21 new and 50 updated place resources, reflecting the work of 9 people. The usual Monday blog post will summarize a full week's worth of such work, but meantime here's a #SneakPeek at one user's contributions over the past few months (and continuing). Since joining the Pleiades team in 2025, Enes Yılandiloğlu has provided 488 new name entries for existing place resources (mostly in Ottoman Turkish, modern Turkish, and pre-19th century English), as well as 9 entirely new place resources.

  7. 2025 day 1: points

    Inspired by my stay in Maastricht performing Carl Orff's with Brabant Koor & the Jussen Brothers.

    Today’s map shows Dutch place names ending in -tricht, -drecht, -trecht—derived from Latin Trajectum, meaning river crossing.

    Maastricht = Mosa Trajectum.

  14. I had this interpretation while reading the EO, but it seems that the “Gulf of America” name only applies to the area inside U.S. 🇺🇸 EEZ + continental shelf and not the whole gulf. This is the same interpretation that @maproomblog states here: maproomblog.com/2025/01/naming

    This is analogous to the “West Philippine Sea“ name that the #Philippines 🇵🇭 uses to refer to its vicinity within the South China Sea and not to the whole sea.

  15. As an amateur cartographer/geographer, this executive order making “Gulf of America” an official name in the United States for the Gulf of Mexico makes my head hurt. 🤬

  16. Wouldn't it be nice to call the islands in the pink zone on this map, here labelled as "South East Asia Isl.", Skaianesia instead?

    σκαιός / skaios is the ancient Greek for west. The name I propose suits the group of islands that lie to the west of the other three named groups.

    I can understand why so many Irish use "these islands" rather than "the British Isles".

    Perhaps the UK and Irish governments could agree on a new geographical designation.

    My suggestion: Islands of the North Atlantic.

    I'm sure some pedants would object that some of these islands are not really in the Atlantic, but I think we could live with that.

    I'm also sure Jacob Rees Mogg, the Daily Mail, and GB News would denounce such a change. In my book, that's all the more reason to go ahead.

    I can imagine a ceremony taking place to celebrate the new name taking place on the island of IONA...

  19. While looking into how Asturian towns happened in the places that they did (some in rather inhospitable spots) I happened upon this interesting article about Locational Fundamentals. Now I have to wonder what the path dependencies were to plop so many villages on top of hills with no water source.
