When Congress last October approved the regulations applicable for the Chamber of Deputies & Senate,it eliminated the Commission for Andean, Amazonian and Afro-Peruvian Peoples and the Environment. On 11 August, Senator #MirthaVásquez from the Ahora Nación party presented a proposal that would re-establish a commission to benefit indigenous peoples.

Academics and indigenous reject legal changes to the anthropologists’ professional body #Indigene #Anthropologie
On 17 June, Congress passed Law No. 32667 modifying Law No. 24166 (of 1985) that created the Colegio de Antropólogos, the officially recognised professional body for anthropologists in #Peru. The amendment to the legislation has given rise to bitter criticism both by indigenous peoples as well as members of the academic community.

In the closing days of the final ordinary legislative session of Congress, discussion was deferred on a bill supported by a broad alliance to legitimate and regulate indigenous self-defence organisations in the Amazon. This bill aimed to promote cooperation between indigenous communities and the state in the face of the growing threats from illegal actors in the Amazon.

A new legal model is proposed for protecting indigenous peoples in isolation #Peru #Indigene
With support from the Instituto de Defensa Legal (IDL) a group of indigenous organisations (CORPIAA) has presented to the Ministry for Culture a proposal for a new legal category to strengthen the protection of indigenous peoples in voluntary isolation (PIACI). The proposal, if adopted, will strengthen the tools available to indigenous organisations to defend their territories.

MAAP publishes its latest figures on deforestation trends in the #Amazonas #Peru #Indigene
A recently published report on deforestation in the Amazon rainforest by Amazon Conservation’s Mapping of the Andes Amazon Project shows that last year there were 736,484 hectares of deforestation, largely from agriculture (94.6%), mining (5.3%), and roads & infrastructure (0.1%). Nearly 132,000 hectares of it was illegal, occurring inside protected areas & Indigenous territories.

Zero Tolerance Initiative is supporting a call made by the Amazonian indigenous peoples of #Peru for the Congress to prioritise the debate and vote on Bill No. 2062/2021-CR. The bill proposes the recognition of the Amazonian Indigenous Security (SIA) as an autonomous system of self-defence and administration of justice in Amazonian communities in the face of illegal activities.

Report shows how accelerating indigenous land titling protects the rainforest #Peru #Regenwald #Indigene
A recent report on communal land tenure security in the Loreto region, prepared by Rainforest US and AIDESEP, concludes that indigenous-led coordination, backed by sustained political commitment and institutional support, can significantly accelerate land recognition. It also argues that a shared responsibility model is essential for closing Peru’s land tenure gap.
