Helped out my grandpa in converting a video from his brother.

He "digitized" some DVD's from him, but the file was bigger then 4GB. So it did not fit on a FAT32 formatted USB drive. (They were .mpg files)

So luckely i had my laptop with me, fired up Handbrake, and converted the file to a mpeg4 video that fitted onto a FAT32 usb drive.

Always take your (spare) laptop with you on vacation, you never know when it comes in handy.

And not bad for a quad-core intel pentium silver.

Ayant un souci avec #ffmpeg en #CLI, j'installe #Handbrake que je n'ai jamais utilisé pour transcoder et sub un avi et je suis agréablement surpris par l'efficacité du truc. Je devrais peut-être utiliser plus le #GUI .

But the whole reason for converting is that Archive won't stream mkv, only its own mp4 conversion of far lower quality :(

Been using #Handbrake to transcode tv show episodes into #AV1 from #HEVC. Took one episode down from 5.6gb to 384mb which was insane. Using very high quality settings, uses a lot of power/CPU so probably not worth it $-wise but hey, gotta use this machine for something!

About to edit video and photos taken at the karate belt test yesterday. Let’s see how she performs with #DXO #Photolab and #DaVinci #Resolve. #mac #apple #m5max

#handbrake encoding with default #Mesa stack does not utilize GPU acceleration without proprietary amf-amdgpu-pro drivers, which are available in #AUR but look to have been abandoned after AMD stopped publishing separated AMF from their stack, building on top of open amdgpu drivers instead, and offer inferior performance in other contexts.

#ffmpeg can with #VAAPI but hammering out scripts for the amount of media I'm archiving, that's less than ideal.

Could spin up a VM with amf drivers, but setting up with SingleGPUPassthrough seems like overkill/pain in the ass.

Any other tools utilizing VAAPI that could make things a little easier?

HandBrake is a open-source tool, built by volunteers, for converting video from nearly any format to a selection of modern, widely supported codecs.

After fixing two AUR `PKGBUILD` files and a bit of patching, the initial rough Arch repo is online. Even made the package list look good with some fancy indexing. The compile takes a long time, but since it's in a VM I'm not too bothered about it. I will probably make an actual build system, but for now the crontab will suffice.

Hmm that's surprising. Used #dvgrab to capture some footage from DV Tapes. There are several formats to choose from. One of them is QuickTime mov. You would've thought #Apple could handle that. But apparently the codec DV/DVCPRO is unsupported by both QuickTime and #FinalCutPro. #Compressor can't handle it either.

The raw format is being handled just fine.

This is not the first time I find Apple stuff to have zero support for some codecs. Yet #HandBrake and #ShutterEncoder do.

Der Handbrake Video Encoder auf Fedora 43 konnte nicht starten.

Ursache: Die shared Library libx264.so.164 fehlt (die es unter Fedora 42 noch gab).

dnf repoquery --whatprovides="*/libx264.so.164"

...Keine Ergbnisse.

Die Pakete x264 und x264-devel sind installiert und bringen libx264.so.165 mit.

...

Symlink in /lib64 erstellt:

ln -s libx264.so.165 libx264.so.164

Handbrake startet wieder.

So, spent most of the day getting Handbrake compiled with the `svt-av1-psyex` and `svt-av1-essential` forks of the SvtAv1 encoder. However, I did win that battle and both are now available in the `sisyphus-client` containers. Definitely a pain in the ass, but it's nice to have options depending on what you want to use. Also updated the documentation to make sure I don't forget which is which.

I still need to implement some pipelines to build these, but holy crap the Handbrake compiles take forever to finish.
