#handbrake encoding with default #Mesa stack does not utilize GPU acceleration without proprietary amf-amdgpu-pro drivers, which are available in #AUR but look to have been abandoned after AMD stopped publishing separated AMF from their stack, building on top of open amdgpu drivers instead, and offer inferior performance in other contexts.
#ffmpeg can with #VAAPI but hammering out scripts for the amount of media I'm archiving, that's less than ideal.
Could spin up a VM with amf drivers, but setting up with SingleGPUPassthrough seems like overkill/pain in the ass.
Any other tools utilizing VAAPI that could make things a little easier?

After fixing two AUR `PKGBUILD` files and a bit of patching, the initial rough Arch repo is online. Even made the package list look good with some fancy indexing. The compile takes a long time, but since it's in a VM I'm not too bothered about it. I will probably make an actual build system, but for now the crontab will suffice.

But apparently the codec DV/DVCPRO is unsupported by both QuickTime and #FinalCutPro. #Compressor can't handle it either.
The raw format is being handled just fine.
This is not the first time I find Apple stuff to have zero support for some codecs. Yet #HandBrake and #ShutterEncoder do.

Der Handbrake Video Encoder auf Fedora 43 konnte nicht starten.
Ursache: Die shared Library libx264.so.164 fehlt (die es unter Fedora 42 noch gab).

Die Pakete x264 und x264-devel sind installiert und bringen libx264.so.165 mit.

Symlink in /lib64 erstellt:

Kaum damit fertig, meine DvD uns Bluray Sammlung zu rippen und via #SteamDeck und #Kodi ins heimische Wohnzimmer zu bringen, hab ich hier einen Nachmittag einen vollständigen Internetausfall.
Ist mir doch egal :)

So, spent most of the day getting Handbrake compiled with the `svt-av1-psyex` and `svt-av1-essential` forks of the SvtAv1 encoder. However, I did win that battle and both are now available in the `sisyphus-client` containers. Definitely a pain in the ass, but it's nice to have options depending on what you want to use. Also updated the documentation to make sure I don't forget which is which.
I still need to implement some pipelines to build these, but holy crap the Handbrake compiles take forever to finish.

Endlich ist Wochenende.
Ich habe die letzten Tage nach der Arbeit nichts mehr auf die Reihe bekommen. Jetzt kann ich das Wochenende endlich nutzen, um mal nachzuarbeiten. :blobcatuwu:
Ich starte gemütlich, indem ich die fertig komprimierten Filme in #Jellyfin bringe und neue Filme in die #Handbrake Warteschlange werfe. Dann gibts noch neue Musik von #Monstercat die in #Funkwhale möchte.
Für heute und morgen muss ich Wäsche zusammenlegen, Arbeitsklamotten waschen, mein Zimmer in Ordnung bringen, einen Finanzplan erstellen, Verträge raussuchen und eventuell Holz hacken. Bis dahin ist sicher wieder Montag, naja. :blobcat_daradara: -
@vkc nice video. Another thing that brothers me about streaming is ownership. Like you i buy dvd's in thriftstores, rip them with #MakeMkv convert them with #Handbrake and play the movies on the device of my choice. It's a bit cumbersome, but it's mine.

В последнее время стал жать видео в AV1 через #ffmpeg и #HandBrake. Из трёх кодировщиков: libsvtav1, libaom-av1 и librav1e стабильно работает первый, хорошо и эффективнее жмёт маленькие видео по сравнению с распространённым H265, но пытаюсь ужать видео в 2,2 ГБ и размер его только увеличивается 🙄

libaom-av1 — это эталонный кодировщик AV1, разработанный Альянсом открытых медиа (AOMedia), в основном при участии Google. Он ориентирован на достижение максимального качества и сжатия, часто используется как точка отсчёта при сравнении других кодировщиков. В то время как SVT-AV1 (libsvtav1) — это проект, созданный Intel и Netflix, с акцентом на высокую скорость и масштабируемость, особенно в многопоточных средах.
SVT-AV1 разработан для практических применений, включая трансляции и массовое перекодирование, где важна производительность.
Ниже приведено детальное сравнение двух кодировщиков по ключевым параметрам.Качество и эффективность сжатия
libaom-av1 традиционно считается лидером по качеству, особенно на медленных пресетах (например, cpu-used=2). Eine DVD mit mehreren Filmen scheint Probleme zu bereiten, da die einzelnen Episoden entweder am Ende abgeschnitten sind oder am Anfang. Hat da jemand Erfahrung mit?
Mit #makemkv war das immer problemlos, leider läuft dort das DVD-Laufwerk leer, wird zwar erkannt aber nichts ausgelesen. Ein Jammer um die gute Software....
Nun suchte ich #ogmrip, da ich das auch unter #opensuse vor makemkv nutzte, aber natürlich gibt es das jetzt auch nicht mehr dort, jedenfalls nicht für #Tumbleweed.
Also: ich werde superuntreu + lade mir jetzt #Debian herunter, da scheine ich alles was mein DVDrip- Herz grad begehrt zu erhalten. Jedenfalls hoffe ich das. Empfehlungen? -
HandBrake
В связи с вопросом второй раз поставил HandBrake (из репозитория версия 1.8.1). Первый раз ставил HB для посмотреть, ещё больше понравилось в этот раз. После опыта с ffmpeg в консоли, когда уже есть некоторое представление результа и влияние применённых параметров на выходной результат, настройки и установки аудио/видео в HB не выглядят такими замороченными.
Изначально записал кусок фильма на 332 МБ, подрезал в Shotcut, импорт в 720p (вес выходного файла уже 94 МБ). Далее пережал через HB в h265 до 58 МБ, длится кусок 3 минуты. В процессе используется процесс ghb (не знаю такой библиотеки, это что-то своё, судя по названию — graphic handbrake). После смены звукового кодека на Vorbis вместо дефолтного AAC вес файла уменьшился до 44 МБ.
Минусы HB
- Не все подсказки переведены, есть с ошибками пунктуации;
- Звуковой кодек получилось выбрать нужны (#vorbis) со второго раза (это пройдёт, как привынешь и разберёшься)
Плюсы HB
- GUI, русифицировано, есть всплывающие подсказки, разобраться и привыкнуть нужно;
- Судя по выходному кодеку #HEVC автоматом использовалось аппаратное ускорение nVidia, чего не отражено в настройках;
- При кодировании процесс ghb грузит ЦП на 40-50 %, есть cli версия в репах.
Есть два DVD, один уже перекодировал в .mp4 через VLC, эти не получилось (видимо, от записи защита). В HB можно по одному трэку вытягивать, но не все, что тоже не плохо. В общем, рекомендасьён, как блогер одна говорит. Буду теперь использовать. Изначально сам был такого мнения, что с GUI нужно разбираться и изучить его, но и синтаксис ffmpeg в консоли, возможные ключи/параметры и их правильное написание тоже требуют времени, учидчивости и некоторого умственного напряжения. 😈

So I have hundreds of videos of ~1 minute recorded from my phone ~10 years ago, and they generally don’t have that great compression, nor they are stored in a modern and advanced video format.
For archiving purposes, I want to take advantage of my workstation’s mighty GPU to process them so that the quality is approximately the same, but the file size would be strongly reduced.
Nevertheless, compressing videos is terribly hard, and way more complex than compressing pictures, so I wouldn’t really know how to do this, what format to use, what codec, what bitrate, what parameters to keep an eye on, etc.
I don’t care if the compression takes a lot of time, I just want smaller but good looking videos.
Any tips? (Links to guides and tutorials are ok too)
Also, unfortunately I am forced to use Windows for this (don’t ask me why 🫠), but I know nothing about Windows because I hate it. Practical software suggestions are very much welcome, too!

Hello les gens ! J'ai encore une question geek : C'est quoi vos réglages préférés pour #ripper vos dvd avec #Handbrake ? Pour un usage local derrière un médiacenter. Je patauge pas mal entre mp4 et mkv, entre h264, h265, vp9...
Un bon compromis, pas trop lent à réaliser, qui ne soit pas de la bouillie de pixels avec un qualité d'image acceptable, qui ne prenne pas trop de place non plus, qui offre la possibilité d'afficher les sous-titres ou des pistes audio supplémentaires...
